PSI Spies: The True Story of America's Psychic Warfare Program

PSI Spies will take you behind the scenes of the U.S. Army’s formerly top-secret remote viewing unit to discover how the military has used this psychic ability as a tool, and a weapon. Despite the fact that remote viewing was developed by various tax-supported government agencies, including the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and even the U.S. Army, a majority of Americans still have never heard of this faculty. In the 1970s, with the support of Congress, the Army formed a small unit of remote viewers to spy for America. These soldiers/psychic spies gained penetrating knowledge about a wide variety of subjects. They were consulted to stop a Soviet plot to kill President Ronald Reagan. They mentally prowled the halls of the Kremlin. They probed Iraq’s hidden weapons sites in preparation for the 1991 Gulf War. From insights into our future to the continuing mysteries of UFOs and crop circles, no subject has been immune to the military remote viewers—America’s Psi Spies.

Tiger Technology: The Creation of a Semiconductor Industry in East Asia (Cambridge Asia-Pacific Studies)

This book grows out of a five-year collaborative research project undertaken by the authors in East Asia. They have worked with firms and institutions in Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, to inquire into the micro-processes of firm-level organizational learning that underpin technology leverage in an industry such as semiconductors. The processes investigated are not specific to microchips, but can be seen working in one knowledge-intensive sector after another. Mathews and Cho argue that indeed these are the processes that will shape industrial evolution in the twenty-first century, not just in East Asia but in the developed world as well. Tiger Technology concludes with an important observation - that wealth can be generated just as much through management of technology diffusion as through conventional concerns with innovation, provided the institutions of leverage are carefully constructed. Read more...

Stephen King (Bibliography 1956 - 2009) Complete collection

UPDATED VERSION OF THE MOST COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF STEPHEN KING

This is the updated version of bibliography of Stephen King, the new bibliography contains about 20 new stories, some of them have never been published, several poems, which is very interesting and several novels and non-fiction books. I found complete Colorado Kid and Blaze, but also new book from november 2009 Under The Dome. On writing is also there. One more thing: Buy your favourite books from King, cause it is much prettier when you feel paper underneath your hands.

I have one dream: To collect all books from Stephen King and buy all original DVD movies and put them on shelves one day. But there is two problem, i have not enough space in my room to do this, and i have not enough money either (Not even close in next several years)
Till that day when I'll have enough money and enough space, I would be satisfied with electronic bibliography of Stephen King that I collect in last several days, and of course movies that I already watched and download (and will) from thePiratebay.
It take a lot of my time to find all this books, and after that convert them from stupid .LITS and Microsoft Word to .PDF. So, all books are in PDF! (Except Roadwork from 1981. I didn't succeed to convert from LIT to PDF, but still the book is readable with Microsoft Reader, Salem's Lot from 2004 is in LIT and PDF,format, but LIT is much more readable than other one). Leave a comment if anyone manage to convert properly these Read more...

Of Chastity and Power: Elizabethan Literature and The Unmarried Queen

Through readings of key Elizabethan texts by Lyly, Raleigh, Chapman, Shakespeare and Spenser, Phillipa Berry shows that while Elizabeth's combination of chastity with political and religious power was repeatedly idealized, it was also perceived as extremely disturbing. By placing these texts within a wider context of European culture and history, Berry shows that the figure of the unmarried queen implicitly challenged the masculine focus of Renaissance discourses of love and of absolutist political ideology, ultimately subverting the philosophical division between spirit and matter upon which Renaissance ideas of women were founded. Read more...

Dark Mission: The Secret History of NASA

Yet the truth is that NASA was born in a lie, and has concealed the truths about its occult origins. Dark Mission documents this seemingly wild assertion.
Why is the Bush administration intent on returning to the moon as quickly as possible? What are the reasons for the current “space race” with China, Russia, and India? Remarkable images reproduced within this book provided to author Richard C. Hoagland by disaffected NASA employees provide clues why, including information about suppressed lunar discoveries.
Mystical organizations quietly dominate NASA, carrying out their own secret agendas behind the scenes. This is the story of men at the very fringes of rational thought and conventional wisdom, operating at the highest levels of our country. Their policies are far more aligned with ancient religions and secret mystery schools than the facade of rational science NASA has successfully promoted to the world for almost fifty years.
Dark Mission is proof of the secret history of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the astonishing, seminal discoveries it has repeatedly suppressed for decades.
Richard C. Hoagland is the former science advisor to CBS News, author of The Monuments of Mars, and a frequent guest on the popular radio programs Coast To Coast and The Art Bell Show.

Journey of the Pink Dolphins

Pink dolphins--and yes, in the Amazon River the flamingo-colored mammals do exist--are believed by Brazilians and Peruvians to take human form, impregnate women, lure lovers to an underwater paradise, and in various ways drive those who encounter them mad. They seem to have worked their magic on science writer Sy Montgomery, who journeys through rain forests and sunken cities in a mad-dash pursuit of the enigmatic creatures.

Despite encounters with piranha-filled waters, toxic ants, and large rats--not to mention boat failures, foreign language problems, and alternate blasts of sun and rain--the persistent Montgomery pushes happily on, offering a lyrical account as intoxicating as the subject itself. She eventually makes contact, swimming with them, even holding one in her arms, but that may be the least relevant aspect of the entire book. Montgomery turns nature into a bewildering drug, opening doors into cultural and biological worlds invisible to most, but which teem with as much unseen life as a drop of river water held under a microscope. --Melissa Rossi --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Beautiful Minds - The Parallel Lives of Great Apes and Dolphins

Endowed through evolution with large brains, the great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos gorillas and orangutans) and the cetaceans (dolphins and whales) are second only to humans in intelligence. In this delightful and intriguing book, dolphin specialist Bearzi and primatologist Stanford discuss the similarities between these groups. Both use tools, have sophisticated means of communication and cooperation, solve problems innovatively, transmit cultural traditions to the next generation and are able to imitate others. Like humans, apes and dolphins form complex social networks, and they are capable of deception and manipulation. The authors cite many examples: dolphins hoard objects in order to get treats or wear sponges as protective masks as they forage; apes use twigs to extract termites from termite mounds, chimpanzees cultivate alliances with group mates to dominate their communities. In the final section, Bearzi and Stanford survey the factors making dolphins and apes endangered species, and they make a plea for conserving the ecosystems in which they live, because the beautiful minds of these creatures are a terrible thing to waste. So declares George Friedman, chief intelligence officer and founder of Strategic Forecasting, Inc. (Stratfor), a private intelligence agency whose clients include foreign government agencies and Fortune 500 companies. Gathering information from its global network of operatives and analysts (drawing the nickname "the Shadow CIA"), Stratfor produces thoughtful and genuinely engrossing analysis of international events daily, from possible outcomes of the latest Pakistan/India tensions to the hierarchy of Mexican drug cartels to challenges to Obama's nascent administration. In The Next 100 Years, Friedman undertakes the impossible (or improbable) challenge of forecasting world events through the 21st century. Starting with the premises that "conventional political analysis suffers from a profound failure of imagination" and "common sense will be wrong," Friedman maps what he sees as the likeliest developments of the future, some intuitive, some surprising: more (but less catastrophic) wars; Russia's re-emergence as an aggressive hegemonic power; China's diminished influence in international affairs due to traditional social and economic imbalances; and the dawn of an American "Golden Age" in the second half of the century. Friedman is well aware that much of what he predicts will be wrong--unforeseeable events are, of course, unforeseen--but through his interpretation of geopolitics, one gets the sense Read more...

Peter Singer identifies the central vision that unifies Marx's thought, enabling us to grasp Marx's views as a whole. He sees him as a philosopher primarily concerned with human freedom, rather than as an economist or a social scientist. He explains alienation, historical materialism, the economic theory of Capital, and Marx's ideas of communism, in plain English, and concludes with an assessment of Marx's legacy.

I survived a direct hit by a plane, suicidal overdoses, STDs. I've been accused of attempted murder. Then I almost died while riding over a bump on a quad bike at f**king two miles per hour.
People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of sixty, which one of us would end up with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and Beverly Hills, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f**king way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time.
A lot of it ain't gonna be pretty. I've done some bad things in my time. I've always been drawn to the dark side, me. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston, who quit his j Read more...

Loose Wire: A Personal Guide to Making Technology Work For You

When you've mislaid that important file or can't connect your new camera, do you just want to hurl your computer out of the window? When your kids/friends/grandparents start talking about blogging, podcasting and RSS feeds do you nod as wisely as you can while wrestling with the urge to throw them out of the window too? The bad news is that technology isn't going away. The good news is that, by picking up this book, you're halfway to making it work for you - not against you. Loose Wire is a compilation of Jeremy Wagstaff's most popular weekly columns on personal technology from The Wall Street Journal Asia and the Far Eastern Economic Review. An ordinary person's primer on technology, Loose Wire explains - in jargon-free language and real sentences - what has happened over the past few years, from the rise of the mobile phone to phishing, to where we are heading, as well as hands-on, practical advice about how to enjoy the ride. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jeremy Wagstaff has worked as a journalist since 1986 - for the BBC, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and the Far Eastern Economic Review. Most of that time has been spent in Asia, covering uprisings, wars, colonial retreats and the odd (sometimes very odd) press conference. No techie, his interest in technology grew out of a realization that it was changing the way journalists - and the world - work, and that following it would probably be a bette Read more...

Digital Diasporas: Identity and Transnational Engagement

Brinkerhoff examines how immigrants who still feel a connection to their country of origin use the Internet. She argues that digital diasporas can ease security concerns in both the homeland and the host society, improve diaspora members' quality of life in the host society, and contribute to socio-economic development in the homeland. Drawing on case studies of nine digital diaspora organizations, Brinkerhoff's research supplies new empirical material regarding digital diasporas and their potential security and development impacts. She also explores their impact on identity negotiation, arguing that digital diasporas create communities and organizations that represent hybrid identities and encourage solidarity, identity, and material benefits among their members. The book also explores these communities' implications for policy and practice. Read more...

The book is meant to instigate scientifically informed election administration. The authors argue for a comparative approach to risk management that considers the costs and benefits of alternative methods. . . . A thoughtful early contribution to a new field of election science.

Will the machine lose your vote? Will it be hacked? Political scientists Alvarez and Hall provide a rigorous analysis of electronic voting, and they come down heavily in favor of the benefits of the new technologies, arguing that media coverage has emphasized the problems while downplaying the potential for empowering more citizens to vote.

For more than half a century, conventional interpretations, Norris and Inglehart argue, have commonly exaggerated the potential threats arising from this process. A series of fire-walls protect national cultures. This book develops a new theoretical framework for understanding cosmopolitan communications and uses it to identify the conditions under which global communications are most likely to endanger cultural diversity. The authors analyze empirical evidence from both the societal level and the individual level, examining the outlook and beliefs of people in a wide range of societies. The study draws on evidence from the World Values Survey, covering 90 societies in all major regions worldwide from 1981 to 2007. The conclusion considers the implications of their findings for cultural policies. Read more...

I am an adult, but I appreciate relatively brief, clear biographies like this. With this background, one is better prepared to read Orwell's own writings, or even fuller biographies about him. I must say that I was amazed by the facts of his life story and by his determined pursuit of experiences that would help him become a writer.
This book is especially useful for students who need concise background information about Orwell for writing term papers.

The reader will find that the physical aspect of the problem and its relationship to oceanography is predominant. Some emphasis is laid on the characteristics of instruments and on their capacity for providing adequate definitions of measured quantities.

Thermodynamics has been considered to lie outside the scope of the book. Furthermore, “Underwater photography and television” have not been dealt with since exceIIent reviews of these chiefly technical subjects have recently been published.

The monograph is presented with the reservation that it is not a complete description of all theories of the optics of the sea and does not cover all research in the field. The author, nevertheless, hopes that it will be useful as a reference book and that it can answer questions which confront the student or the specialist. I am indebted to friends and colleagues all over the world for their support of this work, and in particular to Professor E. Steemann Nielsen and to Drs. Joachim Joseph and John Tyler for stimulating criticism and advice. I also want to express my sincere thanks to the staff of the Institute of Physical Oceanography, Copenhagen, for their unstinting cooperation. Read more...

The tried-and-true methods of evaluating traditional materials (books, magazines, videos) don't translate as easily to Web sites. Fredericks offers not only lists of Web sites, but also ideas on how to use the Internet as part of a larger classroom or research activity. Part one is fairly general, including an introduction to teaching science, as well as tips on teaching with online resources. Included are Web sites that offer lesson plans, suggested search engines, and an example of a parental consent form. The second part, which makes up the bulk of the book, offers science units. Each one focuses on a particular subject area, covering specific topics in the life, physical, earth, and space sciences and the human body (sample subjects include food chains and webs, magnetism, volcanoes, asteroids, and the respiratory system). Each unit includes a list of Web sites, suggested research questions for students, a short bibliography, and a few activities. There is nothing extraordinary about this book, but it's a comprehensive guide for those who are new to the information superhighway, and it's refreshing to see that the author includes print material in his suggested lesson plans. Read more...

In fact, an inhalant is sometimes the first drug young people try, and sniffing inhalants and solvents is so popular that only marijuana and alcohol are now used by more teens in the United States. Despite these facts, few young people believe inhaling these household substances for the drug-like effects is actually dangerous to their health. "Inhalants and Solvents" examines the many household products - approximately 1,400 of them in all - that can be abused as drugs and explains the damage they can do to the brain and body. Read more...

This project traces the word in the Dead Sea Scrolls and other sectors of Judaism. Like Daniel, the term consistently retains eschatological connotations. The monograph then examines how mystery functions within 1 Corinthians and seeks to explain why the term is often employed. The apocalyptic term concerns the Messiah reigning in the midst of defeat, eschatological revelations and tongues, charismatic exegesis, and the transformation of believers into the image of the last Adam. Read more...

In the light of the establishment of the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament, this issue is of particular contemporary importance. This collection discusses religion in Scotland and Wales from a historical perspective and examines the contribution of religion to the sense of national identity in the period from the Evangelical Revival to the present day. It suggests that the histories of the two nations are only understood when the religious dimension is taken seriously. The various essays collected here offer new perspectives on particular denominations, from the Scottish Covenanters to Welsh Methodism, as well as discussing individual figures such as Howell Harris, Edward Irving and Arthur Price, in order to examine the complex relationship between language, national identity and religion. Religion and National Identity is an original and timely contribution, not only to the religious histories of Wales and Scotland, but also to the collective history of Great Britain in the modern period. Read more...

Countries are learning to weave ICT into their strategies for transforming government as enterprises have learned to use ICT to innovate and transform their processes and competitive strategies. ICT-enabled transformation offers a new path to digital-era government that is responsive to the challenges of our time. It facilitates innovation, partnering, knowledge sharing, community organizing, local monitoring, accelerated learning, and participatory development.

In Transforming Government and Building the Information Society, Nagy Hanna draws on multi-disciplinary research on ICT in the public sector, and on his rich experience of over 35 years at the World Bank and other aid agencies, to identify the key ingredients for the strategic integration of ICT into governance and poverty reduction strategies. The author showcases promising practices from around the world to outline the strategic options involved in using ICT to maximize developmental impact—transforming government institutions and public services, and empowering communities for inclusion and grassroots innovation.

Despite the ICT promise, Hanna acknowledges that reforming governance and empowering poor communities are difficult long-term undertakings. Hanna moves beyond the imperatives and visions of e-transformation to strategic design and implementation Read more...

Bill Brownstein provides a guide for the uninitiated and the bewildered, a hands-on intro for anyone who wonders why the porno biz has become so mainstream in just the last few years.
Brownstein’s global travels take him from watching Tristan and other sex superstars accept their trophies at the annual porn awards ceremony in Las Vegas to witnessing the weekend shopping sprees of Dutch families as the kids push their grocery carts through the biggest sex supermarkets on earth.

He takes us from dungeons and dragons pleasure chambers in New York to a different kind of pleasure-the rough trade in Hamburg. And along the way, he stops off to catch some lap-dancing in Montreal and all kinds of unexpected action at the sex bars of Paris. Brownstein provides a lively account of the business of sex and reveals his encounters with a universe of titillation that is fresh, original, naughty, and very bizarre.

Against tremendous odds, she will not back down until she gets what she wants: a divorce.
Najood tells her own amazing story with the help of co-author Delphine Minoui. This inspiring book, which comes out out in February 2010, has already been translated into 16 languages. The eleven chapters, plus epilogue, alternate between her determined legal battle beginning at the court house in the capital city of Sana'a, and the idealic early childhood in a remote village, leading up to her the disasterous union with her abuser.
Bucking the forces of age-old customs, family disapproval, and the tabu of "bringing shame to her family", Nujood's bravery and determination never flicker nor flag. She is completely sure of the justice of her cause, of her own self worth, and her faith in God. Really, Nujood is just an regular kid, like any other; she likes to play, to draw pictures and learn to read, and she loves her family--not so different really than millions of other girls who live in this mostly impoverished society, where men have the final word, no questions asked. But she has an internal strength to never question herself, and the simple belief that right will win out.
I think that, although Nujood's world may seem impossibly remote to our own, her book has universal appeal. It's the story of courag Read more...

Okay, maybe it's juvenile, gross and dirty. But it's so funny! I knew that the book would be hilarious and witty, just like Sarah is. I really think she went above and beyond with this book. Besides sharing stories of family and friends that will have you laughing til you cry or at least snort in an unladylike manner; you'll read things about her that really give you a rare insight into her life and past.
Being the ultimate Sarah fan, I thought I had ferretted out most, if not all, of the info available about her career and why she thinks the way she does. There is so much more depth and honesty in this book than I ever expected. I have an even bigger appreciation of her humor, and a deep admiration for the road she's traveled to get to where she is now. You'll see a new, deeper Sarah here, as funny and shocking as always, but with so much more. I think people unsure of what to think of her and her brand of humor will have a fresh viewpoint and new opinion of her after reading this book. Enjoy!

Barbara Delinsky's tale is set in Zaganack, a small coastal town in Maine that serves as a microcosm of the social, political, economic and cultural landscape of our times. A company town for an upscale retailer, Zaganack is an old township of family ties and deep communal relations, and its values are reflected in that understanding. But this town will be challenged by the age-old question: What makes someone a "good mother?"
Susan, Kate, Sunny and Pam have been friends for a long time. As part-time co-workers, they even created PC Wool, a subdivision of the local retailer specializing in dyed wools, designs and patterns. Just as the mothers are close to one another, so are their four daughters, Lily, Mary Kate, Jess and Abby. The girls are all intelligent, popular and outstanding high school seniors whose mothers are anticipating them going forward with their education when they graduate.
At a mother-daughter evening out, Lily announces to her mother that she is pregnant. Susan, who became a single parent as a teen, is confounded by the news. She also learns that Lily is not the only one expecting --- Mary Kate and Jess are as well. Susan informs Lily's father, Rick, who has always been part of their lives but upon hearing this news decides to become more involved.
British Writers: Retrospective Supplement III

A collection of critical essays covering writers who have made significant contributions to British, Irish, and Commonwealth literature from the 14th century to the present day.

British Writers itself was originally an off-shoot of a series of monographs that appeared between 1959 and 1972, the Minnesota Pamphlets on American Writers. These pamphlets were incisively written and informative, treating ninetyseven American writers in a format and style that attracted a devoted following of readers. The series proved invaluable to a generation of students and teachers, who could depend on these reliable and interesting critiques of major figures.
British Writers began with a series of essays originally published by the British Council, and regular supplements have followed.
The goal of the supplements has been consistent with the original idea of the series: to provide clear, informative essays aimed at the general reader. These essays often rise to a high level of craft and critical vision, but they are meant to introduce a writer of some importance in the history of British or Anglophone literature, and to provide a sense of the scope and nature of the career under review.

What NASA isn't Telling You About Mars

We've all listened for years since we were children, to the endless stories about what the environment on Mars is and how no life could have ever lived on the planet. This e-book is a brand new look at what Mars REALLY must be like, and reveals numerous important ancient Mars artifacts that NASA knows about and has been hiding all along.

How many space agencies on earth have successfully landed a rover on Mars?

Only one: NASA. We are told (and shown) what we are supposed to believe and absolutely nothing more. I have proved this with more than 160 selected images taken straight from NASA computers.

THE 1% ATMOSPHERE

First, we know ICE and weather exist on the planet. If the atmosphere is actually 1% that of earth, any ice would have boiled away or just evaporated. Water BOILS AWAY at room temperature well before reaching .01 atmosphere (1 %.) For all practical purposes, .01 atmospheres is a VACUUM to water's boiling point and to air-breathing life-forms.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

His two earliest, and perhaps most accessible, successes—A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners—are here brought together in one volume. Both works reflect Joyce’s lifelong love-hate relationship with Dublin and the Irish culture that formed him.

In the semi-autobiographical Portrait, young Stephen Dedalus yearns to be an artist, but first must struggle against the forces of church, school, and society, which fetter his imagination and stifle his soul. The book’s inventive style is apparent from its opening pages, a record of an infant’s impressions of the world around him—and one of the first examples of the “stream of consciousness” technique.

Comprising fifteen stories, Dubliners presents a community of mesmerizing, humorous, and haunting characters—a group portrait. The interactions among them form one long meditation on the human condition, culminating with “The Dead,” one of Joyce’s most graceful compositions centering around a character’s epiphany. A carefully woven tapestry of Dublin life at the turn of the last century, Dubliners realizes Joyce’s ambition to give his countrymen “one good look at themselves.” Read more...

He didn't invent the UFO phenomenon, but he became its first authoritative private spokesman. In 1949, TRUE magazine asked aviation writer and retired Marine Corps Major Donald Keyhoe to look into the flying saucer enigma, which had burst onto the scene just two years previously. With information from his friends in the military, Keyhoe concluded that the objects came from outer space and that the Air Force was covering up the story to prevent panic. "The article caused a sensation and a year later Keyhoe expanded it into this landmark book, THE FLYING SAUCERS ARE REAL. In a personal, no-nonsense style, Keyhoe provides the details of his investigation: he talks with the witnesses, reviews the history of the phenomenon, and attempts to pry open the secrecy lid the Air Force had clamped down on the subject. Keyhoe would go on to write four more books on the subject and in 1957 he became director of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena, without a doubt the most influential private UFO organization of all time. But it is this book, which sold a half-million copies, that inspired hundreds of people to take up the UFO cause and established the core elements of UFO mythology, which the government has attempted to counter--unsuccessfully, I might add--to this very day.

Chapman’s writing-style is humorous, direct, seductively logical, and his enthusiasm for the benefits of magick is both tangible and infectious. The novice magician will indeed find themselves equipped to commence all sorts of magickal operations: trance work, enchantment, divination, and even some of the higher forms of spiritual development. To experienced magicians, Chapman offers a subtler challenge: he revitalizes magick by cutting it free from the extreme relativism Chaos Magick bequeathed, provocatively redefining it as: “the art, science and culture of experiencing truth. Read more...

For the better part of its history sociology shared with commonsense its assumption of the ‘nature-like’ character of society – and consequently developed as the science of unfreedom. In this powerful and engaging work, first published in 1976, Professor Bauman outlines the historical roots of such a science and describes how the new trends in sociology emerging from phenomenology and existentialism do not challenge this preoccupation. Rather, he claims, they deepen and extend it by stressing the key role of commonsense, particularly the ways in which it is sustained and embedded in the routines and assumptions of everyday life.

Professor Bauman sets out the form of a critical sociology, based on emancipatory reason. His main concerns are the `validity' of commonsense and the truth of a theory which would resolve to transcend the limitations of commonsensical evidence. Aimed at human liberation A Critical Sociology is designed to question the very same?routines and assumptions of everyday life informed by commonsense. Read more...

'An eye opener: Field, Fox and their contributors convincingly demonstrate to interested laypersons, to students, and to established academics from all fields how young anthropologists today pursue their profession in a whole range of creative new ways.' Andre Gingrich, University of Vienna and Austrian Academy of Sciences 'Readers of these essays on the 'work' of anthropology will not agree with all of them. But they will find them all refreshingly free of moral grandstanding, disarmingly modest in their claims and yet also challenging of many of our most cherished assumptions about the discipline.' Joel S. Kahn, La Trobe University, Australia 'Anthropology Put to Work charts a clear course of action for engagement and collaboration within the context of contemporary anthropological work. Students, young professionals, and seasoned practitioners alike will no doubt find this volume inspiring.' Luke Eric Lassiter, Marshall University Graduate College, USA 'Richard G. Fox

The image of anthropologists "reaching out" from protected academic positions to a vaguely defined "public" is out of touch with the working conditions of these anthropologists, especially those junior and untenure Read more...

"The spectacular rise of China and India, already looming on the horizon at the turn of the millennium, promises to cast a long shadow on the 21st century. Shalendra Sharma is unusually well qualified to analyze their economic and political development in comparative perspective. His well-written and wide-ranging book, focusing on these two giants' integration into the world economy, is aptly suited either for scholarly or recreational reading." - Lowell Dittmer, University of California at Berkeley "A most timely and useful book, containing much important information, and many trenchant insights, on the rise of China and India. Combining rigor and accessibility, it will be appropriate for both advanced undergraduates and graduate students, as well as informed general readers." - S. Paul Kapur, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School "The publication of this comprehensive and well-documented comparative study of the impact of globalization on China and India is most timely. Professor Shalendra Sharma's excellent book is indispensable for understanding the rapid economic growth of these two Asian nations and the price they have paid for their pursuit of globalization. This book should be widely read by policy-makers, scholars, risk analysts, university students, and all those who are concerned with the current and future challenges facing these countries." - Jon S.T. Now, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner return with SuperFreakonomics, and fans and newcomers alike will find that the freakquel is even bolder, funnier, and more surprising than the first.

Four years in the making, SuperFreakonomics asks not only the tough questions, but the unexpected ones: What's more dangerous, driving drunk or walking drunk? Why is chemotherapy prescribed so often if it's so ineffective? Can a sex change boost your salary?

SuperFreakonomics challenges the way we think all over again, exploring the hidden side of everything with such questions as:

How is a street prostitute like a department-store Santa?
Why are doctors so bad at washing their hands?
How much good do car seats do?
What's the best way to catch a terrorist?
Did TV cause a rise in crime?
What do hurricanes, heart attacks, and highway deaths have in common?
Are people hard-wired for altruism or selfishness?
Can eating kangaroo save the planet?
Which adds more value: a pimp or a Realtor?
Levitt and Dubner mix smart thinking and great storytelling like no one else, whether investigating a solution to global warming or explaining why the price of oral sex has fallen so drastically. By examining how people respond to incentives, they show the world for what it really is – good, bad, ugly, and, in the fina Read more...

For instance, thanks to files released in 2006 under the Freedom of Information Act, Taraborrelli details the truly extraordinary three-page document in which an unnamed FBI agent described the romance and sex affair between Monroe and RFK. Rather than the usual bibliographic listings, Taraborrelli cites only a few key books. Instead, he itemizes 30 pages of interviews explaining how he contacted sources close to the subject (e.g., approaching Dean Martin in a restaurant; talking with the historians he calls the true experts). In addition to interviews with everyone from Janet Leigh to Secret Service agents, Taraborrelli read the unpublished notes and interviews of reporters from the 1950s. As Taraborrelli brushes away cobwebs of myth and rumor, his remarkable research and fluid writing captures Marilyn's elan, sensitivity, desperation and despair with a haunting intimacy. Read more...

A Better Pencil puts our complex, still-evolving hate-love relationship with computers and the internet into perspective, describing how the digital revolution influences our reading and writing practices, and how the latest technologies differ from what came before. The book explores our use of computers as writing tools in light of the history of communication technology, a history of how we love, fear, and actually use our writing technologies--not just computers, but also typewriters, pencils, and clay tablets. Dennis Baron shows that virtually all writing implements--and even writing itself--were greeted at first with anxiety and outrage: the printing press disrupted the "almost spiritual connection" between the writer and the page; the typewriter was "impersonal and noisy" and would "destroy the art of handwriting." Both pencils and computers were created for tasks that had nothing to do with writing. Pencils, crafted by woodworkers for marking up their boards, were quickly repurposed by writers and artists. The computer crunched numbers, not words, until writers saw it as the next writing machine. Baron also explores the new genres that the computer has launched: email, the instant message, the web page, the blog, social-n Read more...

The Universalist Movement in America, 1770-1880

Although Universalists have commonly been lumped together with Unitarians as "liberal religionists," in its origins their movement was, in fact, quite different from that of the better-known religious liberals.
Unlike Unitarians such as the renowned William Ellery Channing, who stressed the obligation of the individual under divine moral sanctions, most early American Universalists looked to the omnipotent will of God to redeem all of creation. While Channing was socially and intellectually descended from the opponents of Jonathan Edwards, Hosea Ballou, the foremost theologian of the Universalist movement, appropriated Edwards's legacy by emphasizing the power of God's love in the face of human sinfulness and apparent intransigence. Espousing what they saw as a fervent but reasonable piety, many early Universalists saw their movement as a form of improved Calvinism.
The story of Universalism from the mid-nineteenth century on, however, was largely one of unsuccessful efforts to maintain this early synthesis of Calvinist and Enlightenment ideals. Eventually, Bressler argues, Universalists were swept up in the tide of American religious individualism and moralism; in the late nineteenth century they increasingly extolled moral responsibility and the cultivation of the self.
Corruption, Global Security, and World Order

From the beginnings of civilization, public notables have abused their offices for personal gain while citizens have sought advantage by corrupting those holding power. Today, global security is threatened as never before by fiscal uncertainty, competition and mutual suspicion among world powers, nuclear proliferation, terrorism, and tyranny. This book reveals corruption to be at the very center of these global threats and proposes a combination of remedies such as positive leadership, enhanced transparency, tougher punishment, and enforceable new sanctions against shady activities. "Corruption, Global Security, and World Order" explores the ties between corrupt practice and threats to global peace, corrupt practice and the suppression of human rights and development, corrupt practice and the maintenance of tyranny, and corruption in health and education. Robert I. Rotberg and a distinguished group of contributors discuss the global ramifications and implications of deeply embedded corruption. They demonstrate how criminals and criminalized states now control numerous areas of the world. The book explores issues of human and drug trafficking, and it shows how nuclear and WMD smugglers often coexist with other traffickers. Chapters examine the various ways in which corruption deprives citizens of fundamental human rights, assess the connection between corruption and the spread of terror, and examine ongoing efforts and Read more...

Our ability to understand and interpret others and to tolerate difference, rather than overcome diversity, is therefore at risk. This book focuses on the contested meanings of norms in a world of increasing international encounters. The author argues that cultural practices are less visible than organisational practices, but are constitutive for politics and need to be understood and empirically 'accounted' for. Comparing four elite groups in Europe, Antje Wiener shows how this invisible constitution of politics matters. By comparing individual interpretations of norms such as democracy and human rights, she shows how they can mean different things, even to frequently travelling elite groups. Read more...

It focuses on major issues that are confronting teacher educators now and in the next decade. These include the impact of globalization on the profession of teaching, and how teacher education must deal with changing accountability requirements from governments and establish a set of minimum standards acceptable to enable a person to teach.

The work also considers aspects of the three major phases of teacher education: the period prior to commencing in the profession, successful induction into the profession, and the ongoing professional development of teachers. Finally, it identifies ways in which new technologies can be used to improve the training and ongoing development of teachers. Cases from different countries are used to provide a rich base of data to help us understand how the profession is moving onwards. Read more...

Powerfully argued and thought-provoking, Terrorism and Global Disorder examines whether the world changed as a result of the events of 11 September 2001. It argues that the significance of 9/11 has been overstated and that terrorism with a global reach is best seen as a consequence of other, more fundamental changes. The author contends that the development and global outreach of terrorism stem from the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the superpower hegemony, aided by the spread of international technology and communications. He also examines the consequences of the political exploitation of terrorism and underlines the dangers created by the politicization of counter-terrorism for partisan purposes. Above all, this stimulating book attempts to place terrorism – now a word full of nuance and meaning and denoting a phenomenon which occupies so much government time and money – within the context of history and current affairs. It is an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the causes and nature of terrorism. Read more...

Terrorism and Global Security (Global Issues)

Before 9/11, the United States suffered the occasional attack on its citizens abroad, but the homeland remained secure, and public safety focused on ordinary dangers such as crime, fire, flood, and influenza. After 9/11, new fears intruded on daily life, and Americans were now forced to face a clever enemy who could seemingly attack at any time, at any place. Just as earlier generations remember where they were when they learned of John F. Kennedy's assassination or the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, 9/11 marks the moment American adolescents became aware of international events as well as the broader outlines of global security issues. The subsequent war on terrorism also dramatically changed the terms of a possible career in the military. Accurate and balanced, "Terrorism and Global Security" provides key information on the definition, causes, and goals of terrorism; the history of terrorism; the perpetrators and their backgrounds; counterterrorism; and the issues of balancing security and liberty. Separate case studies focus on the United States as well as the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Peru, and Colombia, examining how each has been affected by terrorism and comparing and contrasting the measures taken in response. Read more...

One of the current debates concerns the concepts of mainstreaming, integration and inclusion-and whether these are in fact different concepts, or simply different terminology. This book is based on the assumption that inclusive education is a necessary part of providing high quality education for all. Using international examples, the author clarifies the rationale for inclusion and demonstrates how it can be put into practice. Read more...

Copyright law in the digital age has become a hot topic, thanks to millions of music downloaders and the controversial, high-profile legal efforts of the music industry to stop them. Here Lessig argues that copyright as designed by the Framers has become dangerously unbalanced, favoring the interests of corporate giants over the interests of citizens and would-be innovators. In clear, well-paced prose, Lessig illustrates how corporations attempt to stifle innovations, from FM radio and the instant camera to peer-to-peer technology. He debunks the myth that draconian new copyright enforcement is needed to combat the entertainment industry's expanded definition of piracy, and chillingly assesses the direct and collateral damage of the copyright war. Information technology student Jesse Jordan, for example, was forced to hand over his life savings to settle a lawsuit brought by the music industry—for merely fixing a glitch in an Internet search engine. Lessig also offers a very personal look into his failed Supreme Court bid to overturn the Copyright Term Extension Act, a law that added 20 years to copyright protections largely to protect Mickey Mouse from the public domain. In addition to offering a brilliant argument, Lessig also suggests a few solutions, including the Creative Commons licensing venture (an online Read more...

Taken over the last three decades, these losses total over US$2 trillion, a figure roughly equivalent to the GDP of Italy. The Sunken Billions: The Economic Justification for Fisheries Reform argues that well-managed marine fisheries could turn most of these losses into sustainable economic benefits for millions of fishers and coastal communities. It argues that strengthened fishing rights can provide fishers and fishing communities with incentives to operate in an economically efficient and socially responsible manner. Phasing out subsidies that enhance redundant fishing capacity and harvesting effort will improve efficiency. Greater transparency in allocation of fish resources and greater public accountability for fisheries management and health of fish stocks will help eco-labeling initiatives to certify sustainable fisheries. Read more...

Unlike most recent publications which dealt exclusively with theoretical aspects of these technologies, this volume focuses mainly on devising effective and innovative applications in food systems in which these delivery vehicles operate. In addition, the book provides some emphasis on new opportunities that may arise from the development of new materials for the design and fabrication of delivery vehicles and carriers.

Encapsulation and Controlled Release Technologies gives the reader a solid grasp of basic concepts of encapsulation technologies and their novel applications in food systems. Dr. Lakkis also presents novel possibilities of encapsulation and controlled release along with a discussion on future perspectives and economical implications of these technologies. Read more...

Originally published in 2006, this innovative study demonstrates how perceptions of the past and the dead, and hence social identities, were constructed through mortuary practices and commemoration between c. 400-1100 AD. Drawing on archaeological evidence from across Britain, including archaeological discoveries, Howard Williams presents a fresh interpretation of the significance of portable artefacts, the body, structures, monuments and landscapes in early medieval mortuary practices. He argues that materials and spaces were used in ritual performances that served as "technologies of remembrance", practices that created shared "social" memories intended to link past, present and future. Through the deployment of material culture, early medieval societies were therefore selectively remembering and forgetting their ancestors and their history. Throwing light on an important aspect of medieval society, this book is essential reading for archaeologists and historians with an interest in the early medieval period. Read more...

Product Description:

Although terrorism is an age-old phenomenon, jihadist ideology is distinctive in its ambition to overthrow the modern state system, abandon the principle of state sovereignty, and destroy the foundations of world order. Barak Mendelsohn argues that a crucial element in responding to such a threat and winning the war against terror in the twenty-first century is the hegemon—a powerful state that takes the lead and generates cooperation among states to fight jihad.

While most analyses of hegemony have focused on power, Mendelsohn firmly grounds the phenomenon in a web of shared norms and rules that both enable and constrain the hegemon’s freedom of action. He examines how the presence of a hegemonic state affects international cooperation, security, and international relations—revealing, for example, why the United States has found greater cooperation for the war in Afghanistan than for the war in Iraq. Tracing and explaining the varying levels of cooperation that exist for suppressing terrorism financing, for preventing non-state actors from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, and for offering military support to U.S. hegemony, Combating Ji Read more...

Product Description:

How do threats of terrorism affect the opinions of citizens? Speculation abounds, but until now no one had marshaled hard evidence to explain the complexities of this relationship. Drawing on data from surveys and original experiments they conducted in the United States and Mexico, Jennifer Merolla and Elizabeth Zechmeister demonstrate how our strategies for coping with terrorist threats significantly influence our attitudes toward fellow citizens, political leaders, and foreign nations.

The authors reveal, for example, that some people try to restore a sense of order and control through increased wariness of others—especially of those who exist outside the societal mainstream. Additionally, voters under threat tend to prize “strong leadership” more highly than partisan affiliation, making some politicians seem more charismatic than they otherwise would. The authors show that a wary public will sometimes continue to empower such leaders after they have been elected, giving them greater authority even at the expense of institutional checks and balances. Having demonstrated that a climate of terrorist threat Read more...

Product Description:

Ira Aldridge -- a black New Yorker -- was one of nineteenth-century Europe's greatest actors. He performed abroad for forty-three years, winning more awards, honors, and official decorations than any of his professional peers. Billed as the "African Roscius," Aldridge developed a repertoire initially consisting of Shakespeare's Othello, melodramas about slavery, and farces that drew on his ability to sing and dance. By the time he began touring in Europe he was principally a Shakespearean actor, playing such classic characters as Shylock, Macbeth, Richard III, and King Lear.
Although his frequent public appearances made him the most visible black man in the world by mid-nineteenth century, today Aldridge tends to be a forgotten figure, seldom mentioned in histories of British and European theater. This collection restores the luster to Aldridge's reputation by examining his extraordinary achievements against all odds. The early essays offer biographical information, while later essays examine his critical and popular reception throughout the world. Taken together, these diverse approaches to Aldridge offer a fuller understanding and heightened Read more...
