The Beekeeper's Handbook

Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile have revised and expanded their clear and comprehensive guide to cover changes in beekeeping. They discuss the crisis created by the parasitic bee mites. In less than a decade, for example, Varroa mites have saturated the North American honeybee population with disastrous results, devastating both managed and wild populations. The new edition of The Beekeeper's Handbook covers mite detection and control as well as the selection and testing of bees that may have some tolerance to mites.

*Serves as a comprehensive well-illustrated introduction for beginners and a valuable reference for the experienced beekeeper.

*Outlines options for each operation within beekeeping, listing advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.

*Provides easy-to-follow directions and diagrams.

*Includes glossary and updated bibliography suggesting more detailed information on the topics discussed. Read more...

Vehicle Fuel Economy

Concerns over national security, environmental stresses, and high fuel prices have raised interest in reducing oil consumption. Through the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires cars and light trucks to meet certain fuel economy standards. As requested, the author discusses: how CAFE standards are designed to reduce fuel consumption, strengths and weaknesses of the CAFE program and NHTSA's capabilities, and market-based policies that could complement or replace CAFE. This is an excerpted and edited version. Read more...

The Empire State Building

Initial plans for the Empire State Building called for an Art Deco masterwork to rise 1,000 feet, with 80 stories of rental space. The high-rise was to completely fill the 84,000-square-foot site of the former Waldorf-Astoria, then New York's most opulent hotel. The Empire State Building would, hopefully, accelerate Midtown's stride toward commercial prominence, pulling more business uptown. Built in the early years of the Great Depression, during which one out of four New Yorkers was out of work, the Empire State Building's construction was thought by many to be a foolish undertaking. Yet, it was completed under budget and ahead of schedule, and the new commercial colossus would stand to see a new day dawning - for New York, for America, and for the world. Read more...

The Google Story

Social phenomena happen, and the historians follow. So it goes with Google, the latest star shooting through the universe of trend-setting businesses. This company has even entered our popular lexicon: as many note, "Google" has moved beyond noun to verb, becoming an action which most tech-savvy citizens at the turn of the twenty-first century recognize and in fact do, on a daily basis. It's this wide societal impact that fascinated authors David Vise and Mark Malseed, who came to the book with well-established reputations in investigative reporting. Vise authored the bestselling The Bureau and the Mole, and Malseed contributed significantly to two Bob Woodward books, Bush at War and Plan of Attack. The kind of voluminous research and behind-the-scenes insight in which both writers specialize, and on which their earlier books rested, comes through in The Google Story.

The strength of the book comes from its command of many small details, and its focus on the human side of the Google story, as opposed to the merely academic one. Some may prefer a dryer, more analytic approach to Google's impact on the Internet, like The Search or books that tilt more heavily towards bits and bytes on the spectrum between technology and business, like The Singularity is Near. Those wanting to understand the motivations and personal growth of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and CEO Eric Schmidt, however, will enjoy this book. Vise and Malseed interviewed over 150 people, including numerou Read more...

While it is written as a textbook, the rich and varied theoretical substance of, and case studies in, the book is suitable for research review purposes. Media and Crime: A Critical Introduction is a useful introductory text, which contains useful features for class discussion (e.g., study questions, summary, keyword definition)." -ASIAN CRIMINOLOGY Read more...

Catalogue of Risks: Natural, Technical, Social and Health Risks

Since the German edition of this book, the topic of risk has experienced even greater attention, not only in the world of science but also in other fields, such as economics and politics. Therefore, many new publications have evolved. To keep with the idea of an encyclopedia for the topic of risk, this book has been completely reworked. Not only are many updated examples included in chapter “Risks and disasters” but also new chapters have been introduced, such as the chapter “Indetermination and risk”. This new chapter was developed since the question “Is it possible for risks to be completely eliminated, and if not why?” has become a major point of concern. Therefore, especially in this chapter, the focus of the book has extended from a simple mathematical or engineering point of view to include much broader concepts. Here, not only aspects of system theory have to be considered, but also some general philosophical questions start to influence the considerations of the topic of risk. Read more...

The Colombian Peace Process and the Principle of Complementarity of the International Criminal Court

Practical arguments as much as shifts in norms have created a situation in which the choice is increasingly seen as "which forms of accountability" rather than a stark one between peace and justice. The Colombian Justice and Peace Law 975 and its implementation offer an interesting and unique approach to dealing with the international crimes committed in Colombia’s decades-long armed conflict. Yet, will this approach suffice with regard to Colombia’s obligations under international law to investigate and prosecute international crimes? Does it meet the standards of the ICC, which has been monitoring the Colombian situation for some time now? In particular, does it pass the complementarity test laid out in the ICC statute or will the ICC have to intervene in Colombia to enforce international criminal law? Read more...

This simple technique in which the thumb is employed on an upbeat, instead of on its usual downbeat, creates a driving groove reminiscent of Appalachian banjo. Frailing is a very versatile pattern that works as well with singer-songwriter guitar accompaniment as it does with fingerpicking blues and old time fiddle tunes. This is the first book ever published on the subject. Written in notation and tablature for intermediate to advanced guitarists. Read more...

Nuclear First Strike - Consequences of a Broken Taboo

Todd Lowery and Gil Peleg were very helpful as research assistants. The book is an expansion and major revision of an exploratory study done with support from the Office of Net Assessment in the United States Department of Defense. The completion of the book, entailing a trying-out of the arguments in seminars around the United States and at a series of international security-oriented institutes around the globe, was facilitated by a grant from the Smith Richardson Foundation. Neither of these organizations is, of course, in any way responsible for the views expressed in this book. A version of Chapter 1 was published in the Spring 2005 issue of Naval War College Review. Read more...

Loved and loathed. Obsessed about the world over. What does it take to become an icon? Regardless of subject, culture, or era, the requisite qualifi cations are the same: (1) challenge the status quo, (2) infl uence millions, and (3) affect history. Using these criteria, Greenwood Press introduces a new reference format and approach to popular culture. Spanning a wide range of subjects, volumes in the Greenwood Icons series provide students and general readers a port of entry into the most fascinating and infl uential topics of the day. Read more...

Since then, and particularly in the last two to three years, some fundamental changes have taken place within the industry, which will continue for many years to come. A basic innovation has been the arrival on the scene of ‘no frills, low cost’ carriers in Europe, the USA, and Australia. This trend will undoubtedly grow in the foreseeable future. Since passengers on medium or long-haul journeys will want to eat, different arrangements will have to be made to satisfy their needs. At the same time, it may be that refreshments and/or meals become a source of revenue for the carrier rather than an expense should a third party be commissioned to take the full responsibility for catering and sales. Read more...

Contemporary Ukraine on the Cultural Map of Europe

Geographically, it is popularly understood to be the European continent/peninsula all the way to the Ural Mountains, down the Ural River and then to the Caspian Sea (Wikipedia). Ukraine is one of the countries situated in the eastern part of Europe. In discussing contemporary Ukraine in the present book, we refer to the newly independent, post-Soviet country that is now trying to reaffirm its identity. Many countries in Europe found or built their own national identities over the past several hundred years. This concerned not only each country’s identity as a nation but also its geographic and cultural mapping. History occasionally changes the fates of countries and individuals to such a degree that it almost seems to dislocate them. Until the early twentieth century, mapping Ukraine on the European continent was not an issue. Read more...

As I wrote in my first book, Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives, and reiterated in a later book, Ten Stupid Things Couples Do to Mess Up Their Relationships, the 3 A’s: Addictions, Abuse, and Affairs, are behaviors, in my opinion, that break the covenant and justify the self-preserving decision to end the relationship.Where the behavior of one or both of the spouses is blatantly destructive, dangerous, or evil, this book does not apply. Read more...

While the delegates recognized the need for a strong executive to govern the United States, they did not want an all-powerful monarch who might become a tyrant. Instead they created three branches of government—the executive, the legislature and the judiciary—each with specific powers, and each with the power to check and balance the other. Read more...

There is a potato bug, inside one of the potatoes, which is trying to understand the nature of the ocean through which the ship is moving. Sir Arthur Eddington, famous British astronomer, once compared man's search for the mysteries of the universe to the activities of the potato bug in the above example. He might have been right as far as the comparison of dimensions went; but he was completely wrong in spirit. The 'potato bugs' called more respectably astronomers and cosmologists have definitely learnt a lot about the contents and nature of the Cosmos. Read more...

From the moment of the Soviet Union’s emergence after the October Revolution, the presence of this new historical actor on the world stage affected every important event. Its birth changed the fortunes of World War I. The Allied victory in World War II owed much to the prodigious human and material capacities the Soviets were able to mobilize— despite the prior loss of many millions and vast resources from the purges, gulags, collectivization, and man-made famines of the 1930s.1 So successful was the wartime effort that Stalin was able to bring into the Soviet sphere a number of other countries in Eastern Europe at the war’s end. The presence of the Soviet Union in the world shaped not only international but internal politics everywhere, from Western European social-welfare policies to the many Third-World struggles that advanced under Soviet aegis. Read more...

The Federal Bureau of Investigation

The United States had entered World War II some six months earlier, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The nation’s leading law enforcement agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was aware that spies from Japan, Germany, or Italy—America’s enemies in World War II— might try to bring the confl ict to American soil. A list of Japanese, German, and Italian aliens living in the United States had been compiled. The FBI’s director, J. Edgar Hoover, ordered FBI agents to review telegraph and cable messages to certain countries before they were sent and to read mail being sent to and from the German and Japanese embassies. Security was increased at defense plants and important industrial sites. Read more...

The Clash of Globalisations: Neo-Liberalism, the Third Way and Anti-Globalisation

In the Western world, it came to be closely associated with the Third- Way political project, which proposed a radical centre ground that transcended statist socialism (in its Stalinist and social-democratic forms) and neo-liberal market fundamentalism. Globalisation was a term commonly used by Bill Clinton and Tony Blair in particular, and, in Britain at least, academic debate and political project embraced, through the work of Anthony Giddens. In the advanced capitalist countries, the idea of a new economy was championed, in which the old boombust cycles of industrial capitalism were replaced by ongoing economic growth boosted by the information-led, ‘new economy’. At the same time, it was claimed that the developing world could get in on the act too, through the adoption of liberal policies that would attract investment, boost trade, and promote long-term growth. Read more...

The Cuban Revolution: Origins, Course and Legacy, 2nd edition

Were I faced with the task of writing The Cuban Revolution again, tabula rasa, I might approach it somewhat differently. Yet I take some satisfaction in the fact that I have had to make only minor changes in this edition to update the original content, while adding a new chapter to broach more fully the developments of the 1990s. In 1998, Madrid's Editorial Coli-bri published the updated book in Spanish. For me, Cuba has never been an emotionally neutral topic. I repeat what I expressed in the first preface: this work is more than a scholarly endeavor; it is a charge from the heart. Readers should know the wellspring of my voice: from the early 1970s until the late 1980s, I supported the Cuban Revolution. Read more...

You'll find lots of new features in Office 2008 for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage, but not a page of printed instructions to guide you through the changes. Office 2008 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual gives you the friendly, thorough introduction you need, whether you're a beginner who can't do more than point and click, or a power user who's ready to tackle a few advanced techniques.

To cover Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage, this guide gives you four superb books in one -- a separate section each for program! You can manage your day and create professional-looking documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in no time. Office 2008 has been redesigned so that the windows, toolbars, and icons blend in better with your other Mac applications. But there are still plenty of oddities. That's why this Missing Manual isn't shy about pointing out which features are gems in the rough -- and which are duds. With it, you'll learn how to:
Navigate the new user interface with its bigger and more graphic toolbars
Use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage separately or together

Gone to the shops: Shopping in Victorian England

These impressions may well be vivid yet contradictory. Many people, for example, believe that Victorian society was safe, family-centered, and stable because women could not work outside the home, although every census taken during the period records hundreds of thousands of female laborers in fields, factories, shops, and schools as well as more than a million domestic servants—often girls of fourteen or fifteen—whose long and unregulated workdays created the comfortable leisured world we see in Merchant and Ivory films. Yet it is also true that there were women who had no household duties and desperately wished for some purpose in life but found that social expectations and family pressure absolutely prohibited their presence in the workplace. Read more...

These periods are distinguished both by the nature and interplay of the problems that the state faced, and by the characteristic functioning of the latter's democratic political structures in coping with those problems. This book deals with the first period, which I have termed the founding period. At one level, it seeks to provide an interpretative political history of that period as a whole: by focusing on the establishment and operation of new political structures; problems of statehood and social integration; relations among political parties; the aspirations and actions of political leaders; and the role of the electorate. These topics, portrayed in their contemporary context, are set against the background of the social, economic, and political structures inherited from the pre-state era. Read more...

Neither star wars nor sanctuary: Constraining the Military Uses of Space

That is why the United States, like most countries, has three branches of armed forces: an army, a navy, and an air force. But with the onrush of technology, a new battlefield looms: outer space. So far, no nation stations weapons in space or deploys effective weapons on Earth with the intended purpose of threatening satellites. In the jargon that Mike O’Hanlon understands so well (and, mercifully, avoids in his own prolific writing), while space is not “weaponized” it is militarized. Today the U.S. Department of Defense uses space assets far more than ever before. Satellites, employed primarily in the cold war for strategic communications and for nuclear targeting and arms control monitoring, are now very much the instrument of the tactical warfighter. Read more...

Drought by itself is not a disaster. Whether it becomes a disaster depends on its impact on local people and the environment.
Managing and Transforming Water Conflicts

With the dramatically increasing number of users and the potential impact of climatic change, human systems and the hydrological system might be on an unsustainable path. Indeed, population rises, the climate seems to change, and water demands grow to quench the thirst of cities, suburbs, industry, and agriculture, often leaving ecosystem needs on thewayside. All of these factors might lead to potential conflicts among uses and users. However, water scarcity is not the only concern, as we are reminded by recent flooding events that have spelled disaster for the human communities living in affected areas. In the past decade, water-related pressures have resulted in media headlines foreboding a future wrought with “water wars.” With 263 rivers and countless aquifers transversing national boundaries, the cultivation of such a somber image is not surprising. Indeed, water cuts across the boundaries of countries, cultures, and economic sectors, meaning that water planning and decision making in one jurisdiction has the potential to spill over to into others. The risk of disruption, conflict, and violence exists around transboundary waters. However, earlier work by the authors points to a lengthy history of cooperative interactions, rather than conflicts, over this precious resource. Read more...

danger from the foreign policy of the present Administration. I have frequently written of the danger to liberty at home from the constant increase in the activity, the spending, and the power of the Federal Government, but today the threat from foreign policy is even greater. We have wandered far from its true purpose to preserve the peace and liberty of the people of the United States. Even when the purpose has been correctly understood, mistakes of judgment have led us into dangerous paths. We are embarked on a voyage at this moment in which a continued failure of understanding and judgment may wreck the greatest adventure in freedom the human race has ever known." - Senator Robert A Taft. Read more...

From ancient Egyptian, Cuneiform and Meroitic writing to Chinese, Maya and Maldivian script, the authors examine the problems and possibilities of polysemy, representing loanwords and the problems of adapting a writing system to another language. The playful and artistic use of writing, including a contribution on writing dance, further illustrates the intricacies of the systems. This collection of articles aims to highlight the complexity of writing systems rather than to provide a first introduction. The different academic traditions in which these writing systems have been studied use linguistic, socio-historical and philological approaches that give complementary insights into the complex phenomena. Read more...

The Future of Technology

As "the revolutionary ideas of a few years ago have now become conventional wisdom," the focus in Part 1 is on the implications of widespread adoption of technology. "The growing ubiquity and sophistication of consumer-electronics devices is the topic of the second part of the book." That is to say, the emergence of "digital lifestyle" within a "digital home." Once information technology has percolated into everything (e.g. wireless sunglasses that double as head phones to radio-tagged cereal boxes), "what new technology will lead the next great phase of transformation, disruption, and creativity?" Then in Part 3, the focus is on various new "contenders" such as biotechnology, energy technology, and nanotechnology.
All of this material consists of various surveys and articles which appeared in The Economist between 2002 and 2005. "Collectively they illustrate how the technology industry is changing, how technology continues to affect many areas of everyday life - and, looking further ahead, how researchers in several promising fields are developing the innovations that seem most likely to constitute the future of technology." It is important to keep in mind that the value of survey results such as those generated by four surveys and provided in Part 1 ("Coming of age," "Make it simple," and "A world of work") is derived from what they suggest about what Joel Barker c Read more...

But it doesn't go into details; for that one should use Moussis' books. But those are not properly updated. 'Is there ever a good book' as one of my former professors said? Everything turned out great, and the book gave me all the information I needed for my presentation. Read more...

The Courage to Love: Principles and Practices of Self-Relations Psychotherapy

This is a book about how psychotherapy may be used to cultivate the courage and freedom to love. In a time when love seems to be fading and hatred and despair rising, it presents love as a skill and force that can heal and invigorate, reconnect and guide, calm and encourage. In Gilligan’s self-relations approach, psychotherapy is a conversation about competing differences. When these differences are treated violently or indifferently, problems arise; solutions develop when the skills of love are practiced. Those practical skills are described here, with an emphasis on post-conventional ethics, Buddhist and akido principles, and ideas of human sponsorship. Read more...

It is not all inclusive but addresses situations encountered with electronic crime scenes and digital evidence. All crime scenes are unique and the judgement of the first responder, agency protocols, and prevailing technology should all be considered when implementing the information in this guide. First responders to electronic crime scenes should adjust their practices as circumstances - including level of experience, conditions, and available equipment - warrant. The circumstances of individual crime scenes and Federal, State, and local laws may dictate actions or a particular order of actions other than those described in this guide. First responders should be familiar with all the information in this guide and perform their duties and responsibilities as circumstances dictate. This is an edited and excerpted edition of a U.S. Dept. of Justice publication.

Fire Debris Analysis

Objective science is used in the analytical scheme until chromatographic or masschromatographic data are generated. Then comes the most diffi cult part of the analysis: the interpretation of the results. Even though many efforts have been made to render the interpretation of the data as objective as possible (standards are available, for example), the fi nal call whether an ignitable liquid is present or not, rests on the evaluation of the criminalist and remains subjective. Furthermore, it will probably continue to remain so forever. As such, the importance of the fi re debris analyst’s skills does not lie so much in his/her ability to operate a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer, but rather in his/her capacity to determine if a set of peaks and valleys exhibited by a sample resembles closely enough those of a reference ignitable liquid. Although training in interpretation must heavily rely on practical exercises, the theoretical base must be obtained through the reading of scientifi c articles and books. Read more...

It seems to me though that it's in fashion at the momnet and that's why it's such a good thing. But the history is really interesting and the quotes are amusing.
I've tried the garlic bread recipe (delicious!) but I really don't think I'm adventurous enough for the ice cream but hey, if there's someone out there who wnats to say they've tried everything then more power to them.
It's not exactly your typical cookery book but worth having for the trivia alone. Who knows, maybe this time next year I'll even be nurturing my own little garlic plants.

Unlike many other books about the search for extraterrestrial intelligent life, this one does not leap upon a simple, single "explanation" for the apparent loneliness of humanity, but rather lays out some of the scope and range of this wide-open field, showing some of the disputes that have made this such a colorful field in recent years.
I admit being biased a bit. I have worked with the author a few times in trying to make sense of SETI, especially the issue of whether Earth civilization should start shouting at the cosmos ([...]) in order to draw attention to this little planet. This book is among the few places where a reader can get a balanced view of the arguments, hearing all sides and getting a chance to weigh things for yourself.

In addition to providing background on China, Wasserstrom also addresses important issues (eg. "Is war likely over Taiwan?") in a even-handed manner. The author also brings appropriate focus - eg. reminding readers that even though intensively competitive, about 70% of its largest businesses are still state-owned. However, the book lacks any solid projections for the future - especially China's economics. Read more...

Animalkind: What We Owe to Animals

Though certainly not an abolitionist, Kazez argues we owe all animals a "respect" which, though its exact boundaries are "fuzzy", is clearly incompatible with our current treatment of them. Kazez's writing style is at both accessible and engaging but what is most impressive is the book's breadth, as it moves elegantly through history, theology, anthropology, neuroscience and philosophy. Both the book's limited conclusion and Kazez's refusal to reduce her position to a set of simple moral prohibitions may frustrate some vegans. Vegans are, however, not Kazez's intended audience. Instead this book is addressed to omnivores who, after decades of consuming a large number of animal products, are open to considering whether their life choices are consistent with their moral commitments. Kazez's style is perfectly suited to this task, with the charming honesty of her brief autobiographical interludes (despite considerable changes to her lifestyle, Kazez is not yet vegan) making it clear that this is not the saint preaching to the sinners. If you are already a committed vegan, then this may not be the book for you but it is the perfect present for your omnivorous friends and family. Read more...

I have for some years now been a long time admirer of the horror movie subgenre, yet it wasn't until doing research for a paper in a Junior contemporary literature class that I encountered Mr. Bishop's work. It had never occurred to me that there was serious scholarly work done on zombie movies, but after reading some of his articles I was not only stunned by his educated and thorough treatment, but also by how much his attention to the topic enriched my own appreciation. He begins with the genesis of zombies and their folkloric roots in Haiti, gradually fleshing out the walking dead up to the present time. Zombies are significant as evolving outside of any established literary tradition as well as being indigenous to the New World (a claim other major horror monsters can't make) A reflexive Haitian voodoo creation while under pressure by the colonial French, eventually zombies "emigrated" to America where their treatment in cinema did little more than reflect postcolonial fears of repressed subjects rising against the ruling class. It wasn't until George Romero with his Night of the Living Dead in 1968 that zombies became an important cultural archetype as the legendary filmmaker used them to expose racism, consumerism, Cold War paranoia, and other societal anxieties. The zombie as significant cultural archetype has a dynamic film history, and Bishop takes you through their evolution in a prose style that is Read more...

Watching my late grandma (whom we called Periama) grinding the soaked rice–lentil mixture for Sunday’s breakfast, picking kari leaves for my late ma’s aromatic crab curry, and listening to my late cha’s (father’s) food adventures during meals, all created in me a passion for food, spices, and cultures. For mom, cooking was a creative process— every day there had to be something new and different on the table. She never hurried her cooking and never settled for less than the best in her choice of spices and ingredients. I observed and learned her pride in creating the ultimate flavor and absorbed her approach to freshness, flavor, and healthy eating. For cha, food had no boundaries. It surpassed all cultures and religions. He taught me to explore and try all foods and flavors available in Malaysia, whether Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Thai, or Western. His adventure for unique flavors and his cultural experiences from his travels around the world provided me the beginnings to understand the many global foods. Mom’s endless search for the ultimate flavor profiles and her zest for cooking, and cha’s enthusiasm and appreciation of all ethnic cuisines gave me an appetite for adventurous eating and a curiosity about new flavors. Read more...

Insects Repellents: Principles, Methods sand uses

The connection between perception and use is logical when one considers that repellents are generally used as personal protection. It is the individual who usually decides whether or not to use a repellent, what kind of repellent to use, and how much to apply. The application to the individual makes entomological sense, in that the countermeasure is applied exactly where it is needed. On the other hand, the application by the individual presents a challenge to the professional who must educate and inform people with widely varied backgrounds on how to best protect themselves from biting arthropods. Insect and arthropod repellents are usually the first line of defense because they require no large equipment, no organized effort of community vector control, and they distribute the responsibility for protection to the individual. Today, there is great public concern throughout the world about vectorborne pathogens as human ecology seems to favor outbreaks of diseases as varied as West Nile fever, dengue, Lyme disease, malaria, leishmaniasis, and tick-borne encephalitis. In contrast to community vector control programs, insect and arthropod repellents give the individual control over exposure to biting arthropods. Professional researchers in public health are al Read more...

While a few reports have given some indication about what can be done to come to grips with these problems, very little has been written about how these necessary changes can be brought about. "A Renewable World" outlines the key steps needed to make the crucial transition actually happen. The latest climate research indicates that the challenge facing us is not just the reduction of our annual global emissions of greenhouse gases, but of their actual concentrations in the atmosphere. After years of inaction, urgent and comprehensive action is now needed to turn an existential crisis for humanity into an opportunity to secure the well-being and prosperity of present and future generations. This book shows how we can: Accelerate the renewable energy revolutionRenew our local economies and our urban habitatRenew the living systems of planet earthRenew and invigorate international cooperationIllustrated in full color, "A Renewable World" deals with a variety of urgent issues in a holistic, comprehensive, and accessible way. Read more...

The short answer is: it is more literal, keeping closer to the sentence-for-sentence structure of the original Middle High German poem. This makes it seem perhaps a bit choppy or less polished than Hatto. That is not to say it is not as good, however; I like that it keeps very close to the original.
The introductory matter and appendices are relatively slight. The introduction briefly covers the basics, then has a couple of short sections on interesting tangents having to do with modern derivative works. In places, the introduction and appendices are a bit unclear.
The notes to specific words and lines are helpful and interesting. I would have preferred that they be presented as footnotes rather than end notes, but that is a minor quibble.
If you want to read the story, either this or Hatto's translation will serve you well. For more voluminous editorial material, get Hatto. For a more literal rendering, get this one.

Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice

It makes for an interesting case study of one corner of our incredibly industrialized food system. The author seems quite fascinated by the regulatory hearings which led especially to the current state of affairs with respect to "not-for-concentrated" orange juice; the reader feels distinctly less fascinated than the author.
One thing of interest is precisely the lack of conclusions drawn. Yes, we conclude, orange juice is quite unlike the orange in the advertisements with the straw sticking straight out of it. And, yes, the way it came to be what it is today came from complex chemical, industrial, and legal processes. But there's also not any particular reason to think that these processes are dangerous or unhealthful -- just dishonest. So what, if anything, is to be done? The author deliberately refuses to answer.

Lesbianism, Cinema, Space: The Sexual Life of Apartments (Routledge Advances in Film Studies)

Through the formal analysis of five lesbian apartment films, Wallace demonstrates how the standard repertoire of visual techniques and spatial devices (the elements of mise-en-scene, favoured locations and sets, classical systems of editing, and the implied story world itself) are used to scaffold female sexual visibility. With its sustained focus on the filmic syntax surrounding lesbian representation on screen in the post-Production Code era, the book comprises an original contribution to queer film studies. In addition, Wallace also deploys its discussion of lesbianism and cinematic space to critique a number of tendencies in contemporary social theory, particularly the theoretical identification of public sex cultures as the basis for a queer counterpublic sphere. Read more...

The Industrial Vagina: The Political Economy of the Global Sex Trade (RIPE Series in Global Political Economy)

The industrialization of prostitution and the sex trade has created a multibillion-dollar global market, involving millions of women, that makes a substantial contribution to national and global economies.

The Industrial Vagina examines how prostitution and other aspects of the sex industry have moved from being small-scale, clandestine, and socially despised practices to become very profitable legitimate market sectors that are being legalised and decriminalised by governments. Sheila Jeffreys demonstrates how prostitution has been globalized through an examination of:

    * the growth of pornography and its new global reach

    * the boom in adult shops, strip clubs and escort agencies

    * military prostitution and sexual violence in war

    * marriage and the mail order bride industry

    * the rise in sex tourism and trafficking in women.

She argues that through these practices women’s subordination has been outsourced and that states that legalise this industry are acting as pimps, enabling male buyers in countries in which women’s equality threatens male dominance, to buy access to the bodies of women from poor countries who are paid for their sexual subservience.

This major and provocative contribution is essential reading for all with an interest in feminist, gender and critical globalisation issues as well as students and scholars Read more...

This is the second book of his "Alien trilogy", and it focuses on research methodology. He is especially concerned about the lax methods being used to investigate claims of UFO encounters, where few investigators bother to visit the actual site or interview the witnesses firsthand.
Mr. Vallee again questions the extraterrestrial hypothesis, and takes fellow ufologists to task for only listing or collecting evidence that supports their hypothesis. He is especially concerned about the use of hypnosis in "abduction" cases, where the hypnotist may be leading the abductee to report activities that easily fall into the extraterrestrial survey camp.
Mr. Vallee offers no conclusive proof or definitive answers, just data and information for the reader to peruse and decide for themselves. This book is a wake-up call to ufologists to strengthen their research methods, and improve the current state of ufology. Perhaps, they should even re-think the questions being asked.
While I may not personally agree with all of Mr. Vallee's opinions, I think that he presents a very needed voice of caution and reason in a field fraught with high emotions. This book would make a terrific text for a class on studying paranormal phenomenon, or gather witness reports.

As a VP and only a foot soldier, I witnessed from a distance much of what transpired at Lehman. I saw Dick, Chris, Joe, et al. "grow up" in the business. I saw and heard much of the yelling and screaming and phone tossing and banging on the desks over the years. Until, we became more civilized as we got down to the business of "one firm" and making money. While reading The Devil's Casino I enjoyed being able to match the faces to most if not all of the characters. I am in no position to pass judgment on anyone, nevertheless it does not diminish my disappointment in the actions by many of those I knew so well.
I'd like to share two anecdotes about Chris Pettit. In one of his town hall meetings he said to the sales and trading team, and I'm paraphrasing, Come in each day write a few tickets, make some money and if your not being productive at 4:30 pm go home to your family get a good nights rest and come in the next morning ready to do it again. Don't rush out an by the Ferrari and the home in the Hamptons just yet. Another and more personal anecdote occured during the 1987 stock market crash. As horrible as Oct 19, Black Monday, was for me, Tueday Oct 20, 1987 was horrific.

It started publication in1982. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, they published this book containing some of the top stories of those 20 years. The Best of The Week, a celebratory volume capturing twenty years of themagazine's existence, brings together some of the most fascinating stories inIndian journalism. A judicious mix of hard news and features, the bookcontains twenty-five stories, culled from the period between 1982 and 2002.
The news articles documenting events like the assassination of Mrs Indira Gandhi and the Bhopal gas tragedy, brilliantly recreate incidents that shook the nation. An interview with Pakistan's President Zia-ul-Haq reveals the canny General at his best, while a psychiatrist's in-depth analysis shows how Sachin Tendulkar's brain works. Far removed from the world of the top brass is the poignant love story of a French girl who marries an Indian beggar afflicted with leprosy.

(After all, didn’t I break the law?) * Will the state revoke my license? Police officers know that very few people — perhaps one out of 50—ever contest their tickets. Those who do fight are often so unprepared and nervous that they have a tough time winning. Occasionally police officers cite motorists in borderline situations where the ticket may or may not stand up in court even if the motorist bothered to contest. In some situations, the police officer may be convinced that the ticket was merited and—with all due respect to the officer—you may feel quite differently. Read more...

The deposed Shah was hiding out in Mexico, former president Nixon and Henry Kissinger along with David Rockefellers personal physician go to visit the Shah. This group then writes a letter to president Carter stating that for medical reasons the Shah needs to come to the U.S. for medical treatment not available in the U.S. and when that takes place the Iranians seize the embassy and hostages.
The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy And Its Geostrategic Imperatives

Brzezinski was for a long time a strategist, a political planner of the highest rank so I have to take him seriously. But I couldn't help but constantly wonder if the book is for real.
It displays an unabashed and unapologetic view of the U.S. as a world 'hegemon' (author's word) and divides the rest of the world in 'vassals' (author's word), rivals, 'pivots' and strategically irrelevant countries. Western Europe and Japan are the prominent members of the first category, Russia and China of the second. The pivots are the countries that have strategic choices important to the U.S., such as the Ukraine. United Kingdom is an (amusing) example of strategically irrelevance.

The scariest part of this book is not that fact that the type of political favors and influence peddling described occur, but that there is little oversight in the government or media to prevent or expose it.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about the influence of business on government policy, especially with the current global political climate.

How to Build a Digital Library

Some of these are recursive or self-referential. Accordingly, I am pleased to testify that a suitable answer to the question carried in this book’s title is the book itself! Witten and Bainbridge have indeed provided a roadmap for those eager to build digital libraries. Late in 2001, with a draft version of this book in hand, I planned the introductory unit for my spring class Multimedia, Hypertext, and Information Access (CS4624), an elective computer science course for seniors. Departmental personnel installed the Greenstone software on the 30 machines in our Windows lab. Students in both sections of this class had an early glimpse of course themes as they explored local and remote versions of Greenstone, applied to a variety of collections. They also built their own small digital libraries—all within the first few weeks of the course. Read more...

Coffee: Growing, Processing, Sustainable Production

During the last two decades major changes have been taking place in worldwide coffee production. The most significant of these changes has been the massive increase in the quantities produced. ICO statistics show consistently increasing production levels particularly over the last 15 years reaching a record level of 120 million GO kg bags in 2002. Over the same period there has been a significant decrease in the average price paid for coffee on world markets which fell to USD cents 47 per pound in 2002 compared to 120 cents in the 1980s. The basic cause of the decline in coffee prices has been one of oversupply with the increase in coffee production in recent years outstripping demand by several percentage points. There has been a steady accumulation of large stocks of coffee, particularly in importing countries, which have put additional downward pressure on coffee prices. Thus in recent times many coffee producing countries have seen a catastrophic decline in export earnings despite increasing production, and the incomes of many coffee farmers have been reduced to the point at which they are struggling to survive. The impact on the finances of millions of small farmers in lesser developed countries has reached crisis proportions. Read more...

The Secret Team: The CIA and Its Allies in Control of the United States and the World

Colonel Prouty's book on the Secret Team should be required reading for all concerned Americans. Herein, the author, a retired Air Force Colonel and CIA insider, reveals for all to see the machinations of the Secret Team and their impact on US history in the post World War II era. This is terribly important information.
I was particularly impressed with Prouty's depiction of Eisenhower's peace initiative and how it was sabatoged by the Secret Team. Ike was preparing for his peace summit with Kruschev when Gary Powers was sent off on his fool's errand on April 30th, 1960, a date with significant occult emblematics. The capture of Powers by the Soviets effectively scuttled the Eisenhower peace plan, which would have ruined the plans of the Secret Team, for continued Cold War tension, and treasure for the merchants of venom.
The essential truths in this important book are still relevant today. Of course, the ineffectual George Walker Bush is not entirely in charge of American foreign policy in this critical time. He is certainly still being manipulated by the sucessors of the Secret Team depicted in this excellent and well written book. Any serious student of American foreign policy in the post World War II era ought to read this important book.

The Presidents - A Reference History, 3rd edition

This revision features important additions; they include an early assessment of President George W. Bush’s administration, already marked by unprecedented challenges to national security, and, of course a full account of President Bill Clinton’s two terms. One new essay views the history of the presidency as a whole, and another provides an authoritative history of the White House. The highly admired essay on First Ladies has been brought up to date as have the instructive Appendices: the General Bibliography on the Presidency, The Table of Presidential Data, and profile of The Executive Office of the President. All of the articles on the individual presidents were reviewed and revised where needed to accommodate fresh interpretations. Evaluations of recently published books update the bibliographies. Two full-color inserts vividly portray the social history of the presidency and election-related memorabilia, making more tangible how the U.S. Chief Executives are chosen and their daily life in office. Read more...

Influencer: The Power to Change Anything

The principles in this book have the potential to change the world - by changing behaviors of individuals, families, communities and nations.
The authors teach us how to create the change we'd like to see in the world using a deceptively simple framework (e.g. "Make the Undesirable Desirable" and "Design Rewards and Demand Accountability"). Many of the concepts are intuitive - the problem is that I had never intuited them before, much less put them all together in a framework I could act on. They support the framework with sound theory from behavioral psychology and demonstrate it with real-world examples of people who are solving big, important problems. Throughout it all they use a straight-forward conversational style and a great sense of humor.
But be warned: It's not a self-help, positive-mental-attitude, quick-fix, rah! rah! book, and it's not a fast, easy read - it's not supposed to be. The book deals with powerful concepts and it took me some time to think through the implications and how I could apply them. I re-read some chapters several times and spent time writing out how I could apply the principles (I usually do this in the margins - but with Influencer I ended up using a journal since there was so much to write about).
It's well worth the time and effort - I'm excited by the results I'm seeing personally as I apply the concepts in my roles as a father, husband, church leader and business leader.

He sold me, as a person who frequently misplaces commonly used objects. Professor Solomon's book is amazingly functional as well as funny. If it's possible I actually enjoy the finding process rather than dread it when I need to search for lost objects, thanks to his methods. They may sound corny but they actually work. Because of the successful track record I've had with this resource I chuckle whenever I must place the post-it on my mirror reading "it's not lost-- you are". The 3 "C"s make sense: Comfort, Calmness, Confidence. How many times have we searched in a panic only to undermine our own efforts? The humor doesn't merely help relax the finder, it focuses. This book is in my top 5 most consulted. It's paid for itself many times over. Read more...

He's also very funny, and his ability to really hit the nail on the head is mindblowing . You just KNOW he's telling the truth.
The reptiles ? Why would he tell the truth about everything else, but just lie about this one aspect ? I don't think so . As with everything else in David's books, there's just too much evidence and it all fits together that bit too well for it not to be true. And it's fundamental to everything else he's presenting .

Infinite Love Is the Only Truth: Everything Else Is Illusion

There is less focus on the details of Illuminati history and more examination of how all is a virtual reality game - the "Matrix," generated by Consciousness itself to challenge itself and explore the possibilities of existence when separation and limitation are the basis of perception. Icke throws in a number of interesting photos, including his nude self from I am Me I am Free, Neil Hague's metaphysical art, holographic 3D images, and Dr. Emoto's water crystals as popularized by the What The Bleep Do We Know movie. This book seems to me a positive step for Icke, but the title is problematic due to the nature of associations of the world "love." All things considered, this a great book to expand your mind with and help in deprogramming onself from the confines of this experiential reality matrix. The illusions exist only as consciousness perceives itself in limited (filtered, programmed) ways. Icke is a truly groundbreaking author in connecting holistic science, spiritual development, and research into dark polarity power structures. By helping us understand these topics he has employed some nice wit and come to the realization that it's all an Illusion of sorts. Nice work David! Read more...

I have a favourite saying - 'Everything you know is wrong'.
Forget the 'news' reports focussing on Mr.Icke's sanity - once you've read what he has to say you'll realise why the controlled ( and controlling) media, want his reputation ruined.
Those who argue "If what he says is true, he would have been bumped off by now" just don't get it. Character assassination is the weapon of choice.
Icke is a hugely courageous man.

I have no idea why it would be in the humor section of the bookstore. Buy it, learn the material, weave some fantastic tales for the grand kids and become the family legend.
