This book is a must-read for the budding yogi, the spiritual veteran looking for a deeper understanding, and everyone in between... --Yogi Times

Product Description
Autobiography of a Yogi is at once a beautifully written account of an exceptional life and a profound introduction to the ancient science of Yoga and its time-honored tradition of meditation. This acclaimed autobiography presents a fascinating portrait of one of the great spiritual figures of our time. With engaging candor, eloquence, and wit, Paramahansa Yogananda tells the inspiring chronicle of his life: the experiences of his remarkable childhood, encounter with many saints and sages during his youthful search throughout India for an illumined teacher, ten years of training in the hermitage of a revered yoga master, and the thirty years that he lived and taught in America. Also recorded here are his meetings with Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Luther Burbank, the Catholic stigmatist Therese Neumann, and other celebrated spiritual personalities of East and West. The author clearly explains the subtle but definite laws behind both the ordinary events of everyday life and the extraordinary events commonly termed miracles. His absorbing life story becomes the background for a penetrating and unforgettable look at the ultimate mysteries of human existence. Product Description:

This is a study of the Bengali Kartabhaja sect and its place in the broader movement of Tantrism, an Indian religious movement employing purposely shocking sexual language and rituals. Urban looks closely at the relationship between the rise of the Kartabhajas, who flourished at the turn of the 19th century, and the changing economic context of colonial Bengal. Made up of the poor lower classes laboring in the marketplaces and factories of Calcutta, the Kartabhajas represent "the underworld of the imperial city." Urban shows that their esoteric poetry and songs are in fact saturated with the language of the marketplace and the bazaar, which becomes for them the key metaphor used to communicate secret knowledge and mystical teachings.

Review
"Urban's two volumes offer a magisterial overview and theoretically sophisticated interpretation of a group that is notoriously difficult to approach, either linguistically or in terms of context." --Journal of the American Oriental Society
"A refreshing blend of archival and field research, history of religions, postmodernism, and postcolonial studies."-- The Journal of Religion

My thanks can never be expressed sufficiently to so many monks and
lay people in the Reb gong region for the encouragement, hospitality
and support they have shown me during the ten years in which I have
developed this book. I would especially like to thank A khu Khri
rgan tshang (brother of the seventh Skal ldan rgya mtsho) and A lags
ma ni (nephew of the seventh Skal ldan rgya mtsho and cousin of the
eighth Skal ldan rgya mtsho) for their encouragement; and the Bkra
shis ’khyil scholar Dpal ’byor, who read the biography of Skal ldan
rgya mtsho with me and who has been a great source of inspiration
over the years. This book could not have been written without the
consistent and excellent help of the Rong bo scholar, Blo bzang chos
grags, with whom I worked during the summers of 2000 and 2001,
who answered numerous questions over the entire spectrum of the
book and proofread the Tibetan script. I also want to acknowledge
the help of the late Rong bo scholar ’Jigs med theg mchog (principal
teacher of the eighth Skal ldan rgya mtsho) in helping me obtain a
woodblock print of Skal ldan rgya mtsho’s Collected Writings in
1996 and in assisting my efforts towards making a catalogue of it in
2001.
I also owe much gratitude to Harvard professors Leonard van der
Kuijp and Robert Gimello; Dan Martin; and E. Gene Smith, founder
and director of the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center, who have
offered numerous suggestions covering the entire book Read more...

Hindu Dharma - The Universal Way of Love

An illuminating account of Hindu Dharma (Hindu Religion) in all its aspects bearing the vast erudition, intuitive insights and synaptic vision of the Pujya Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamiji of Kanci Kamakoti Pitha. To deal with Hindu Dharma, or more correctly, Veda Dharma or Sanatana Dharma, within the compass of a book, is like trying to contain an ocean in a jar. It is a task that can be accomplished only by a Great Master. Such a Master was the author of this work. The author discusses the basic texts of Veda Dharma - the four Vedas, the six Vedangas, Mimansa, Nyaya, the Puranas and Dharmasastra. These encompass various systems of thought and various points of view and the Great Master tries to make them part of one unified wisdom with modern knowledge and it thus that he finds common points between the metaphysics and physics. Altogether it is an integrated view of Sanatana Dharma that emerges in which the ultimate Vedic message of liberation here and now is underlined. Read more...

Vedanta Philosophy - Five Lectures on Reincarnation

Product Description
Vedanta is one of the world's most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions. Vedanta is the philosophical foundation of Hinduism; but while Hinduism includes aspects of Indian culture, Vedanta is universal in its application and is equally relevant to all countries, all cultures, and all religious backgrounds. The unity of existence is one of the great themes of Vedanta and an essential pillar of its philosophy. Unity is the song of life; it is the grand theme underlying the rich variations that exist throughout the cosmos. Whatever we see, whatever we experience, is only a manifestation of this eternal oneness. The divinity at the core of our being is the same divinity that illumines the sun, the moon, and the stars. There is no place where we, infinite in nature, do not exist.

Hanuman's Tale The Messages of a Divine Monkey

Hanuman, the devoted monkey helper of Rama and Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India's ancient Ramayana epic. But more recently he has also become one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon - enshrined in majestic new temples, but equally present in poster art, advertising, and mass media. Drawing on Sanskrit and vernacular texts, classical iconography and modern TV serials, and extensive fieldwork and interviews, Philip Lutgendorf challenges the academic cliche of Hanuman as a "minor" or "folk" deity by exploring his complex and growing role in South Asian religion and culture. This wide-ranging study examines the historical evolution of Hanuman's worship, his close association with Shiva and goddesses, his invocation in tantric ritual, his physical immortality and enduring presence in sacred sites, and his appeal to devotees who include scholars, wrestlers, healers, politicians, and middle-class urbanites. Lutgendorf also offers a rich array of entertaining stories not previously available in English: an expanding epic cycle that he christens the "Hanumayana." Arguing that Hanuman's role as cosmic "middle man" is intimately linked to his embodiment in a charming and provocative simian form, Lutgendorf moves beyond the Indian subcontinent to interrogate the wider human fascination with anthropoid primates as boundary beings and as potent signifiers of both Self and Other.
