How to Cheat in Photoshop shows you how to cheat in two important ways. First, you'll learn a professional montage artist's proven-to-be-successful tips for getting the best out of Photoshop's many features quickly and efficiently, so that you can create work under deadline while still maintaining quality. Second, you'll learn how to make an image look like something else entirely, for those moments when stock imagery just won't do and you don't have the time (or funding) to set up a photo shoot. Photomontage master Steve Caplin has been a recognized leader in the world of photo manipulation for many years, and in this invaluable resource for designers, illustrators, retouchers, students, and graphic artists, he shows exactly what methods he uses to create stunning imagery used in advertising, publishing, print media, and more.

Fully updated to cover all of the new features in Photoshop CS5, this book is also backwards-compatible and can be used with any version of Photoshop. The accompanying DVD for Mac and PC contains over two and a half hours of video tutorials for additional training, and on the book's popular website www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com, you'll find even more resources such as an "Ask the Author" forum, sample images from other How to Cheat fans, and weekly challenges so that you can test your own skills and see where your creativity can take you.

VRay: THE COMPLETE GUIDE

VRay: THE COMPLETE GUIDE is the first book in the world completely devoted to VRay. Its aim is to provide an avanced support for the specialists in this branch. All too often we lose a lot of time searching the meaning of a particular parameter. Who hasn't spent entire days trying to understand what was wrong with their rendering? Having some "presets" is not enough: it is necessary to understand and have knowledge of the tools daily used. This is the only way thanks to which you'll be able to face more and more difficult tasks.
VRay: THE COMPLETE GUIDE was born thanks to two year's hard work, during which we tried to produce a high-quality handbook committed to VRay's users. Not just a basic list of commands, but a special tool, composed by technical and theorical parts, by which you'll be carried away! You'll be able to find, through 1000 pages, 2300 images and 3200 renderings expressly created for this handbook. Enclosed you'll also find a DVD-ROM containing 32 animations in .mov format, bearing examples otherwise impossible to understand via images only. It's an unrepeatable handbook, difficult to find elsewhere: made up of 1000 pages, full colour, 20x28x5cm (other manuals are usually smaller: 17x23x3cm). Bound with extreme care, through paperback binding stitched with wire referendum and not simply glue, it holds up through the time. The hardback cover also is hardbound disk, allowing a better usability.

Mathematics for Computer Graphics, 3rd edition

1.3 Who Should Read This Book?
I have written this book as a reference for anyone intending to study computer
graphics, computer animation, computer games or virtual reality, especially for
people who want to understand the technical aspects. Although it is possible to
study these topics without requiring the support of mathematics, increasingly, there
are situations and projects that require animators, programmers and technical directors
to resort to mathematics to resolve unforeseen technical problems. This may be
in the form of a script or an extra piece of program code.

1.4 Aims and Objectives of This Book
One of the aims of this book is to bring together a range of useful mathematical
topics that are relevant to computer graphics. And the real objective is to pre
programmers and animators with an understanding of mathematics so that they can
solve all sorts of problems with confidence.
I have attempted to do this by exploring a range of mathematical topics without
intimidating the reader with mathematical symbols and abstract ideas. Hopefully, I
will be able to explain each topic in a simple and practical manner, with a variety of
practical examples.
This is far from an exhaustive study of the mathematics associated with computer
graphics. Each chapter introduces the reader to a new topic, and should leave the
reader confident and capable of studying more advanced books.

1.5 Assumptions Made in This Book
I suppose that I do expect that readers wi Read more...

"Another great offering from Steve Hullfish. There are so many texts out there covering so many different aspects of post-production. Yet the final, all-important step of color correction and finishing has been a true tradecraft. The only way you learned was by sitting at the feet of a master. Steve has demystified much of that and given both beginners and professionals a fantastic resource.

One of the most important knowledge lies in Engineering Graphics.
Book Overview : Computer Aided Engineering Graphics : (As per the new Syllabus, B. Tech. I year of U.P. Technical University)

Introduction

Any Engineer, irrespective of his branch of specialization, has to have certain knowledge in order to design and manufacture any product for usage of society. One of the most important knowledge lies in Engineering Graphics. Technological Universities have reckoned the importance of this subject and have made this as an important core subject for those entering into the field of Engineering. Engineers are a special class of professionals who employ the art and science of dreaming image as a means of communication. Hence Engineering Graphic or Drawing is the language of Engineers.

There are many areas where industry is ahead of institutions and also vice versa. Computer Aided Engineering Graphics (CAEG) is one such area where both can move in same pace without any time lag for the modern production system. This book is for I year (I or II semester) B.E. or B. Tech. courses where Engineering Graphics CONCEPT remains same with Computer Aided Engineering Graphics, the only change is tools i.e., instead of drawing instruments here it is used the computer and the CAD Software. This book illustrates and exemplifies methods for the creation of artificial plant models, and the application of these methods within areas such as simulation, virtual reality, botany, landscaping, and architecture.
The models are combined to create gardens, parks, and even entire landscapes. The range of creating representational forms reaches from deceptively authentic looking pictures to abstract presentations. In addition, with similar methods organic objects can be produced, changed, and animated.
Written for: Computer scientists, media designer, developer of computer games, architects, biologists, landscape designer.

But balance doesn’t have to mean boring, as cutting-edge designers are showing with exciting new deconstructionist looks.
Making and Breaking the Grid is both a practical workshop in traditional layout design and a bold and inspirational guide to breaking the rules. In the first part of the book, designers learn the basics of working with layout grids for all types of projects, including advertisements, books, posters, and invitations. Once they’ve mastered that process, the fun begins—and the second part of the book shows how to deconstruct the grid to create edgier, more interesting work.
Bringing the common yet critical element of layout to new levels of innovation, this much-needed book gives designers the license and the means to break away from convention and create work that is unique and fresh—yet effective and user-friendly.

Warren F. Kuhfeld's Statistical Graphics in SAS: An Introduction to the Graph Template Language and the Statistical Graphics Procedures provides a parallel and example-driven introduction to the SG procedures and the GTL. Most graphs in the book are produced in at least two ways. Each example provides prototype code for getting started with the GTL and with the SG procedures. While you do not need to write a template to make many useful graphs, understanding the GTL enables you to create custom graphs that cannot be produced by the SG procedures. Knowing the GTL also helps you modify the sometimes complex templates that SAS provides.

Written for anyone interested in statistical graphics, Statistical Graphics in SAS is a comprehensive introduction to these two aspects of ODS Graphics. It helps you understand the basics of what you can do with the SG procedures as well as how you can go beyond that by using the full power of the GTL. Read more...

Covering every aspect of Flash animation, the book is a fast-paced yet thorough review of the Flash animation process. Divided into three phases of production (pre-production, animation, post-production) this book breaks the Flash animation process into smaller, more manageable steps. And because the authors approach the animation process from various perspectives (such as producer, animator, and editor) the book balances many of the real-world issues facing today's Flash animators, from artistic to technical to financial. The book starts off by looking at planning and designing an animation project, including working out your goals, and putting together character libraries and storyboards. Next up we look at the production phase, which includes using plug-ins to make your work more efficient, implementing your animation, and adding special effects. Finally, we look at post-production work, including how After Effects can be used effectively alongside Flash for tasks such as camera mechanics, ho Read more...

Graphically Speaking: A Visual Lexicon for Achieving Better Designer-Client Communication

Graphically Speaking solves such communication problems by breaking down client-designer dialogue into something both parties can understand. It visually defines more than 30 of the most common words that clients use to describe what they want in a design. Vague, possibly confusing terms ndash; words like elegant or powerful or warm ndash; are made specific as they relate to actual design style. Entries provide visual reference materials including color combinations, fonts and final designs so that terms are defined both literally and visually. Because of the structure of the book, it's really three must-have books in one ndash; a client communication guide, a designer reference and an inspiring collection of top design projects. Lisa Buchanan is the Art Director of HOW Design Books. Before joining HOW, she worked with clients on freelance projects including logos, web sites, letterhead and business cards ndash; all while developing her insights into client-designer relationships. Read more...

Starting with the underlying mathematical ideas, it gradually leads the reader to a sufficient understanding of the detail to be able to implement libraries and programs for 2D and 3D graphics. Using lots of code examples, the reader is encouraged to explore and experiment with data and computer programs (in the C programming language) and to master the related mathematical techniques.

A simple but effective set of routines are included, organised as a library, covering both 2D and 3D graphics – taking a parallel approach to mathematical theory, and showing the reader how to incorporate it into example programs. This approach both demystifies the mathematics and demonstrates its relevance to 2D and 3D computer graphics. Read more...

Nick’s demo takes the viewer through the process he uses to get as close to this goal as possible. The ephemeral nature of this subject is discussed within the framework of historical context. Inspiration sources and methods for cleansing the mind and body are shown, and a hands-on process is demonstrated. Over 140 pages of sketches lead to 6 pencil rendered images that define a novel look and form that can be applied to a wide variety of designed objects.

Design Representation

Design representation is necessary for all design activity. You will gain a guide to both theory and practical application in this discussion of representation as it occurs during the process of design. Goldschmidt and Porter give you perspectives on representational issues in design that are both informative and evocative of further inquiry. The unique interdisciplinary approach brings a new dimension to the study of representation, benefiting the global network of researchers, students and practitioners in all areas of design. Rather than addressing the larger framework directly, a series of smaller case studies are presented, each dealing with aspects of representation in architecture and engineering. Binding together historical-cultural, cognitive-social and technological perspectives eliminates the need for further reading. Innovative research methods based on numerous well-illustrated examples will leave you with new ideas to build on. International contributors focus on worldwide research activities, offering you more than just an expansion of a single viewpoint. Design Representation delves into the common roots of representation in all design disciplines through case studies, historical investigations, theoretical constructs and programming. If you are involved in any design activity, this will be a truly exciting addition to your bookshelf.

A major revision and expansion of a previous volume in this series, this account includes many examples and new results as well as improved treatments of older material. So that non-specialists will find the treatment accessible the authors have included short introductions to the three main topics. This book will be welcomed by graduate students and research mathematicians and be valuable for advanced courses in finite combinatorics. Read more...

Today’s increasingly complex systems pose challenging problems: they must support numerous devices and media having disparate color properties, and they also must provide for the interchange of images among dissimilar systems. In this book, the authors address and solve these problems using innovative methods of representing color in the digital domain.

The second edition of this popular book explains the capabilities and limitations of existing color management systems and provides comprehensive practical solutions for communicating color within and among imaging systems, from the simplest to the most complex. Beginning with the fundamentals of color and human color perception, the book progresses to in-depth analyses of the nature of color images, digital color encoding, color management systems and digital color interchange. Fully revised and updated, this second edition of Digital Color Management features new and expanded coverage including:

- electronic displays and electronic imaging systems;
- scene-based and appearance-based color encoding methods;
- color management for digital cinema;
- a Unified Paradigm—a comprehensive, integrated color-managed environment for the color-imaging industry;
- four new chapters, two new appendices, and more than 80 new figures.

Gen Doy explores this relationship, primarily in relation to contemporary art but also going back to the early modern period and Holbein's Ambassadors. She argues that the importance of subjectivity for art goes far beyond self-portraits, exploring the self and identity--both the artist's and the viewer's--and seeks a way of thinking the self that goes beyond both Cartesian and postmodern approaches to subjecthood. She looks too at work and consumption; self-presentation; photography and the theatre of the self; the marginalized--beggars and asylum seekers--and "the real me." A wide range of artists, including Claude Cahun, Tracey Emin, Jeff Wall, Barbara Kruger, Eugene Palmer and Karen Knorr are discussed, as well as historical material from earlier periods. Read more...

"Secrets of 'action timing' lucidly explained and demonstrated by two of Britain's most highly respected and adept practitioners. An essential primer for both traditional and C.G. animators."
Ken Clark, animation historian and writer

"...this is the only publication devoted wholly to one of the most vital concepts in the art of animated film... The book is a vital source of reference for students as well as every studio and every animator...It's also easy to keep around for reference, it's not a huge coffee-table bible sized book made to impress. It just gives the facts, numbers and formulas and a few drawings to illustrate. Made by animators for animators.Although it was principally written for 2D animation, this book has crucial information for any animator (2D, CGI or model animation). It explains simply and clearly how to time a walk or a run; how to give your character a sense of weight; how force is transmitted; the effects of friction; spacing -and much more. The new foreword by John Lasseter puts these traditional skills in today's context, and gives praise where it is due. Every animator, would-be animator, animation studio and animation course should have this book."

High dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is an emerging field that has the potential to cause a great scientific and technological impact in the near future. Although new, this field is large and complex, with non-trivial relations to many different areas, such as image synthesis, computer vision, video and image processing, digital photography, special effects among others. For the above reasons,HDRI has been extensively researched over the past years and, consequently, the related scientific literature is vast. Read more...

Welcome to the last issue of 2009,
where we wrap up two of our tutorial
series’ and get you ready for a fresh
start in 2010!
We’ll be tackling the final chapter of the
Next Gen tutorial series with Joseph
Harford for Max, Gavin Goulden for
Maya, James Busby for LightWave, and John Hayes for modo,
where we’ll be setting up our shaders and materials, and applying
textures; moving on to set up a light rig and camera, and finishing
with a final render. Each artist also finishes his chapter with a
preview of what the character would look like in-game, so turn
to p.88 to get your final fix of that Next Gen tutorial good stuff!
And for those wondering what’s coming next month, to follow
on from such a fantastic tutorial series, well here’s your answer:
Due to popular demand we’ll be bringing you a second series of
Environment Lighting, this time looking at an outdoor environment,
specifically created to make it the ideal demo model for the
lighting scenarios we’ll be teaching you. This series will come to
you for Max and Mental Ray, Max and V-Ray, Maya, and Cinema
4D. We have a great artist line-up planned for you, and we’re even
working on a third series of Environment Lighting tutorials as well,
so you’ll want to stay tuned to 3DCreative in 2010 – that’s a heads
up from me to you!
We’ll also be finishing up with the final chapter of our Photoshop
for 3D tutorial series, with Fabio M. Raghona teaching us how to
create backgrounds for characters. Read more...

Creating a Photo Album in Photoshop Elements for Windows: Visual QuickProject Guide

But you may not want--or need--a comprehensive book just to learn the basic photo retouching and organizing tasks that you want to accomplish.

Realizing that you won't want to waste a single minute reading about all you can do with Photoshop Elements, best-selling author Katherine Ulrich cuts straight to the chase in this compact, low-priced volume, using simple project-based instruction and big, colorful screen shots to guide you through the process of making your first photo album with Photoshop Elements. By focusing on a single goal (organizing your photos into an album) rather than exploring every option and feature, Katherine demonstrates the quickest, easiest, smartest route to photographic success. Each short lesson builds on the last as you learn how to fix common flaws, artistically enhance your photos, create composites, add text and graphics, explore different printing options, organize them into a stunning album, and, finally, how to share them with friends, family, and colleagues.

OpenGL(R) ES 2.0 Programming Guide

OpenGL ES 2.0 is the industry’s leading software interface and graphics library for rendering sophisticated 3D graphics on handheld and embedded devices. With OpenGL ES 2.0, the full programmability of shaders is now available on small and portable devices—including cell phones, PDAs, consoles, appliances, and vehicles. However, OpenGL ES differs significantly from OpenGL. Graphics programmers and mobile developers have had very little information about it—until now.

In the OpenGL® ES 2.0 Programming Guide, three leading authorities on the Open GL ES 2.0 interface—including the specification’s editor—provide start-to-finish guidance for maximizing the interface’s value in a wide range of high-performance applications. The authors cover the entire API, including Khronos-ratified extensions. Using detailed C-based code examples, they demonstrate how to set up and program every aspect of the graphics pipeline. You’ll move from introductory techniques all the way to advanced per-pixel lighting, particle systems, and performance optimization.

Coverage includes:
Shaders in depth: creating shader objects, compiling shaders, checking for compile errors, attaching shader objects to program objects, and linking final program objects
The OpenGL ES Shading Language: variables, types, constructors, structures, arrays, attributes, uniforms, varyings, precision qualifiers, and invariance
Inputting geometry into the graphics pipeline, and assembling geometry into primitives

The past decades have seen significant improvements in 3D imaging where the related techniques and technologies have advanced to a mature state. These exciting developments have sparked increasing interest in industry and academia in the challenges and opportunities afforded by 3D sensing. As a consequence, the emerging area of safety and security related imaging incorporates these important new technologies beyond the limitations of 2D image processing. This is the first book that covers the current state-of-the-art in 3D imaging for safety and security. Topics addressed in this book include 3D imaging related to biometrics, face recognition, surveillance, safety inspection and robotic planning for physical security analysis and public safety. The book presents thoroughly revised versions of lectures given by leading researchers during the `Workshop on Advanced 3D Imaging for Safety and Security` in conjunction with the International Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition CVPR 2005 on June 25, 2005 in San Diego, USA. Read more...

Chris Cunningham, director of music videos, commercials and video art

.a worthwhile investment for animators and artists who want to focus on creating their designs and not get bogged down in technical jargon.
Steve Kilisky, Senior Product Manager, After Effects, Adobe Systems Inc.

...one of my favorite demo artists in the industry. Her tutorials are always compelling, well-designed, and worthwhile.
Brian Maffit, Total Training

Angie is an outstanding guru of After Effects...sitting at one of Angie's seminars brings gasps of awe from seasoned and beginner audiences alike.... you will enjoy this book immensely.
