The Second Coming of Steve Jobs (Audiobook)

From the acclaimed Vanity Fair and GQ journalist - an unprecedented, in-depth portrait of the man whose return to Apple precipitated one of the biggest turnarounds in business history.

When Steve Jobs became the acting CEO of Apple Computers, it was hemorrhaging more than a billion dollars a year. His return after twelve years of exile to the company he co-founded completely revitalized Apple. With the revolutionary success of the iMac, Apple turned a profit of over $600 million last year.

Based on interviews with scores of people - rivals, colleagues, friends - who have worked with Jobs over the years, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs presents the most revealing portrait yet of this extraordinarily complex man; how and why he almost gave up his career; the details of his negotiations with Disney's Jeffrey Kaztenberg and Michael Eisner and of the culture clash between Silicon Valley and Hollywood; his methods of leadership, management, creativity, and innovation; his friendship and rivalry with Bill Gates - and much more.

Since the early days of Apple, Steve Jobs has captivated the public. Now, as Jobs prepares to conquer Hollywood with his enormously successful animation film studio, Pixar, Alan Deutschman brings listeners what will be one of the most talked-about business audios of the year.

Alan Deutschman is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. For the past twelve years, he has covered business and technology. He was a correspondent for Fortune for seven years Read more...

Growth Forecasting

Product Description
This book explores how to set up an empirical model that helps with forecasting long-term economic growth in a large number of countries. It offers a systematic approach to models of potential GDP that can also be used for forecasts of more than a decade. It is an attempt to fill the wide gap between the high demand for such models by commercial banks, international organizations, central banks and governments on the one hand and the limited supply on the other hand. Frequent forecast failures in the past (e.g. Japan 1990, Asia 1997) and the heavy economic losses they produced motivated the work. The book assesses the large number of different theories of economic growth, the drivers of economic growth, the available datasets and the empirical methods on offer. A preference is shown for evolutionary models and an augmented Kaldor model. The book uses non-stationary panel techniques to find pair-wise cointegration among GDP per capita and its main correlates such as physical capital, human capital and openness. GDP forecasts for the years 2006 to 2020 for 40 countries are derived in a transparent way.

Recent advances in methodology, based on the dual formulation of the theory of production in terms of prices, have enabled econometricians to achieve these objectives more effectively. This volume summarizes the economic theory, the econometric methodology, and the empirical findings resulting from the new approach. Read more...

The authors are leading scholars in the fields and introduce the latest models for analysing marketing data. The papers are representative of the types of problems and methods that are used within the field of marketing. Marketing focuses on the interaction between the firm and the consumer. Economics encompasses this interaction as well as many others. Economics, along with psychology and sociology, provides a theoretical foundation for marketing. Given the applied nature of marketing research, measurement and quantitative issues arise frequently. Quantitative marketing tends to rely heavily upon statistics and econometrics. However, quantitative marketing can place a different emphasis upon the problem than econometrics, even when using the same techniques. A basic difference between quantitative marketing research and econometrics tends to be the pragmatism that is found in many marketing studies. Another important motivating factor in marketing research is the type of data that is available. Applied econometrics tends to rely heavily on data collected by governmental organizations. In contrast marketing often uses data collected by private firms or marketing research firms. Observational and survey data are quite similar to those used in econometrics. However, the remaining types of data, panel and transactional, can look quite diff Read more...

In addition to many theoretical exercises, this book contains exercises designed to develop the computational tools used in modern Bayesian econometrics. The latter half of the book contains exercises that show how these theoretical and computational skills are combined in practice, to carry out Bayesian inference in a wide variety of models commonly used by econometricians. Aimed primarily at advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying econometrics, this book may also be useful for students studying finance, marketing, agricultural economics, business economics or, more generally, any field which uses statistics. The book also comes equipped with a supporting website containing all the relevant data sets and MATLAB computer programs for solving the computational exercises. Read more...

Modern econometric analysis tries to develop new approaches from an economic perspective. As a consequence, there is less of a unified econometric theory than in former times. Specific branches which require specific methods have been established. Modern time series and duration analysis, panel data analysis, microeconometrics, evaluation methods, and specific data problems are examples of these new approaches. In this book leading German econometricians in different fields present survey articles of the most important new methods in econometrics. The book gives an overview of the field and it shows progress made in recent years and remaining problems. Read more...

Current economic conditions are forcing everyone from large corporations to smaller privately held companies to maximize their revenue streams from new and existing customers. To be successful, firms today must outsell their competition and exceed customer expectations-thus creating long-term satisfaction and loyalty.

While basic sales methodologies instruct salespeople on the nuts and bolts of the sales process-who to approach in an organization, when to ask questions, and what to ask-ROI Selling takes them to a new level. Using a unique ""360 Degree Measurement"" technique, this guide provides practical tools for turning valuable customer feedback into a compelling case for their products and services.

Sales professionals will be able to demonstrate to the customer how their products and services will produce a more successful and tangibleoutcome than the competition. The findings that follow are products of years’ long research by the Center for Liberal-Democratic Studies in the area of poverty and prosperity. They are firmly based on a strong belief in the invisible hand of the free market and the personal responsibility of the indi- vidual for his/her welfare and prosperity. Coming from a country that has experienced dramatic changes in setting up institutions and creating incentives for individuals in the last 20 years, the authors have gathered vivid, first hand experience about human reactions to changing incentives. We are grateful to William Inboden, Laza Kekic, Branko Milanovic and Linda Whetstone for their comments and suggestions that led this book to be improved from the first draft. Naturally, none of them are to be held responsible for possible mistakes and our value judgments. The Center for Liberal-Democratic studies is grateful to Lega- tum Global Development for their support for this project. The opinions expresses in this book are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of Legatum Global Development. Read more...

Taking Economics Seriously

There is nothing wrong with economics, Dean Baker contends, but economists routinely ignore their own principles when it comes to economic policy. What would policy look like if we took basic principles of mainstream economics seriously and applied them consistently?

In the debate over regulation, for example, Baker—one of the few economists who predicted the meltdown of fall 2008—points out that ideological blinders have obscured the fact there is no "free market" to protect. Modern markets are highly regulated, although intrusive regulations such as copyright and patents are rarely viewed as regulatory devices. If we admit the extent to which the economy is and will be regulated, we have many more options in designing policy and deciding who benefits from it. On health care reform, Baker complains that economists ignore another basic idea: marginal cost pricing. Unlike all other industries, medical services are priced extraordinarily high, far above the cost of production, yet that discrepancy is rarely addressed in the debate about health care reform. What if we applied marginal cost pricing—making doctors' wages competitive and charging less for prescription drugs and tests such as MRIs?

Taking Economics Seriously offers an alternative Econ 101. It introduces economic principles and thinks through what we might gain if we free ourselves from ideological blinders and get back to basics in the most troubled parts of our economy. Read more...

Semiparametric and Nonparametric Methods in Econometrics

Often, it is assumed that functions of interest are linear or that unobserved random variables are normally distributed. Such assumptions simplify estimation and statistical inference but are rarely justified by economic theory or other a priori considerations. Inference based on convenient but incorrect assumptions about functional forms and distributions can be highly misleading. Nonparametric and semiparametric statistical methods provide a way to reduce the strength of the assumptions required for estimation and inference, thereby reducing the opportunities for obtaining misleading results. These methods are applicable to a wide variety of estimation problems in empirical economics and other fields, and they are being used in applied research with increasing frequency.

The literature on nonparametric and semiparametric estimation is large and highly technical. This book presents the main ideas underlying a variety of nonparametric and semiparametric methods. It is accessible to graduate students and applied researchers who are familiar with econometric and statistical theory at the level taught in graduate-level courses in leading universities. The book emphasizes ideas instead of technical details and provides as intuitive an exposition as possible. Empirical examples illustrate the Read more...

The problem of the harmonization of Consumer Price Indexes (CPIs) and the time-space integration of baskets is analyzed at the EU-zone level, with methodological and practical proposals on how to proceed for an overall treatment of the matter. Another issue is comparisons between Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs) and CPIs. Likewise, the construction of sub-indexes for households, economic and social groups is investigated, in order to obtain specific inflation measurement instruments. The book provides evidence from the most updated databases. Among the other issues treated in this book are spatial comparisons of price levels through PPPs and the international comparisons of macroeconomic aggregates, a re-consideration of index numbers theory, the measurement of production in non-market services, deflation problems, and price indexes in financial markets. Read more...

A Guide to Econometrics has established itself as the first-choice text for teachers and students throughout the world. It provides an overview of the subject and an intuitive feel for its concepts and techniques without the notation and technical detail often characteristic of econometrics textbooks. The fourth edition updates the contents and references thoughout, while retaining the basic structure and flavor of earlier editions. New material has been added on several topics, such as bootstrapping, count data, duration models, generalized method of moments, instrumental variable estimation, linear structural relations, Monte Carlo studies, neural nets, time series analysis, and VARs. A new appendix and a new type of exercise underline the importance of the sampling distribution concept. Read more...

Fundamental questions about democratic governance and institutional responsibility are raised by examining the power of the nation's largest industry, and one that arguably has been the dominant industry of the twentieth century. This study focuses on the U.S. auto industry's political influence to show its inordinate impact on public policy. It is written for those who are interested in understanding the exercise of corporate power in America and its effect on democratic possibilities. This work is not intended for two audiences: car buffs, who want to read a celebration of the automobile, and those scholars who insist that the sole legitimate approach for social inquiry is statistical testing of hypotheses. Read more...

Trading Options at Expiration: Strategies and Models for Winning the Endgame

That's how I make my living. I've read all the books, been to the seminars, and have the scars from experience. So believe me when I say this book is different. It's not the same options books with a different cover. It's not going to start all over from scratch about what are options. This little book is packed with an out-of-the box winning strategy that takes advantage of the institutional moves (for once!). The pinning of stocks on expiration day is a phenomena that has been noted for some time. How to make money from this is not so clear. Mr. Augen takes advantage of institutional trading behavior on expiration day and details not only which stocks to trade but which strategy and what time of day to apply each strategy. [read this last sentence again] This approach is not conjecture but a statistical study as to how certain stocks move. This is a genuine money making strategy that can earn 200%-300% or more in a few hours. Just recently a straddle purchased on a stock mentioned in the book could have been purchased for $1 and sold for $6 a few hours later. The beautiful thing is that institutions can't even take advantage of this strategy!
My previous favorite book on options was Mr. Augen's Volatility Edge which, again, is in a class by itself. His next book was the Options Trader's Workbook which will push your knowledge on options like no other. I don't know why Mr. Augen is disseminating this strategy that most people would jealously guard. This book pulls it all together in a conceptually sound, yet practical, manner, and brings the theory to life. A unique feature is the integration of traditional static trade theory into modern neoclassical growth theory so the reader has the sense of building upon known constructs as opposed to learning a sequence of different models. The book provides several examples of real economic problems with policy interests and shows how to "bring these problems to life" with theory and data. Read more...

Specifically, their use will permit you to cut internal investment costs significantly relative to mutual funds and even relative to index funds. His writing is technical, but can easily be understood. He does stray into some areas that suggest the use of certain market metrics to determine what investment types will be better and when (market timing and asset class selection). You will need to determine for yourself if his suggested tactics will work for you. Nonetheless, I found his concepts new and interesting and consider myself more informed having read them. In summary, a good addition to your reading materials on the subject. Read more...

Advertising: A Very Short Introduction

Indeed, though advertising is pervasive in our society, how it works (if and when it works) is not a question most of us can answer. In this Very Short Introduction, Winston Fletcher, a seasoned advertising veteran with extensive inside knowledge, offers an illuminating look at this billion-dollar business, dispelling some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding the industry. Fletcher offers a short history of advertising and explains how the industry works and how each of the parties--the advertisers, the media, and the agencies--contribute to the process. He also looks at the financial side of advertising and asks how today's Wanamakers know if they have been successful, or whether their money has in fact been wasted. The book concludes with a discussion of controversial and unacceptable areas of advertising, such as advertising aimed at children and the promotion of products such as cigarettes and alcohol. Read more...

For the most part these abilities provide us with adequate guidelines for conducting the business of everyday social life. By and large, the majority of us, most of the time, are able to conduct our social lives with family, friends and acquaintances relatively smoothly by sorting out the trustworthy good from the distrust-deserving bad. The management of societal risk controversies moves us from face-to-face encounters in small groups, the environment of the evolutionary adaptation of trust, to a different arena of interaction. In this often impersonal arena of conflicting ideologically based group perspectives, common everyday understandings about trust, the folklore of trust, if you will, often let us down. Read more...

However, skills in fashion are not enough to guarantee success, as even when those skills are exceptional there is still the constant risk of failure and bankruptcy. A knowledge of marketing is essential to help ensure success and lessen the possibility of failure. To paraphrase Armani, ‘Clothing that is not purchased or worn is not fashion.’ A good knowledge of fashion marketing can make the difference between a prototype that lingers in a dark storeroom and a garment that people really want to buy and wear. Read more...

Trade policy flexibility mechanisms are designed to deal with contractual gaps, which are the inevitable consequence of this contractual incompleteness. Trade policy flexibility mechanisms are backed up by enforcement instruments which allow for punishment of illegal extra-contractual conduct. This book offers a legal and economic analysis of contractual escape and punishment in the WTO. It assesses the interrelation between contractual incompleteness, trade policy flexibility mechanisms, contract enforcement, and WTO Members' willingness to co-operate and to commit to trade liberalization. It contributes to the body of WTO scholarship by providing a systematic assessment of the weaknesses of the current regime of escape and punishment in the WTO, and the systemic implications that these weaknesses have for the international trading system
, before offering a reform agenda that is concrete, politically realistic, and systemically viable. Read more...

Current WTO requirements set no ceiling on the amount of green box subsidies that governments can provide, on the basis that these payments cause only minimal trade distortion. Governments are thus increasingly shifting their subsidy spending into this category, as they come under pressure to reduce subsidies that are more directly linked to production. However, growing evidence nonetheless suggests that green box payments can affect production and trade, harm farmers in developing countries and cause environmental damage. By bringing together new research and critical thinking, this book examines the relationship between green box subsidies and the achievement of sustainable development goals, and explores options for future reform. Read more...

This book seeks to investigate the evolution of the core ideas and policy recommendations of the major schools of economic thought, and to present and critically evaluate those theories that have survived over time and can inform us about current developments and economic policies. The theories of major economists are presented and used to promote an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the economy and to address contemporary problems and issues. In addition, the book explores the fascinating dynamics of shifting from one school of economic thought to another. Each chapter concludes with a summary, critical remarks, a set of questions for reflection and discussion, and recommendations for further reading. Read more...

Supply Chain Coordination Mechanisms: New Approaches for Collaborative Planning

In inter-organisational supply chains, an additional, yet unresolved problem arises: due to confidentiality reasons, decentralized parties keep their local data private, which prevents an integrated planning. Local planning procedures such as upstream planning, which are usually applied then, result in suboptimal solutions for the supply chain as a whole. In this work, new mechanisms for inter-organizational, collaborative supply chain planning are presented. These mechanisms are able to identify the systemwide optimum for several classes of supply chain planning problems. They can be applied by two or more self-interested parties and do not require a trusted third party. Extensive computational tests for randomly generated and real-word data suggest a favorable performance of these mechanisms. Read more...

It highlights the benefits of these instruments, their legal aspects and the appropriate alternatives. The forward, futures and options contracts in commodity markets are discussed and the arguments in favour of and against these instruments examined. The forward contracts issue includes the possibility of trading gold in forward basis, the forward market for currencies and the possible alternative to manage related risks. With the examination of futures contracts, the main arguments against such a contract are addressed, for example the sale prior to taking possession and the sale of debt hedging and speculation. This study proposes khiyar al-shart and bay al-arbun as tools of risk management and alternatives to options. The sale of pure rights is at the center of the admissibility of options in Islamic law and is investigated comprehensively.

From a policy perspective, however, these elements of the industrial organization of banking are inextricably linked. The goal of this book is to provide a complete overview, exposition, and evaluation of the interplay among bank behavior, market structure, and regulation. It also considers implications for a variety of public policy issues, including bank competition and risk, market discipline, antitrust issues, capital regulation and regulatory restructuring. The book can serve as a learning tool and reference for graduate students and academics, as well as bankers and policymakers studying the industrial organization of the banking sector and interested in the impacts of banking regulations. Read more...

Measuring What Matters: Simplified Tools For Aligning Teams And Their Stakeholders

And nowhere is the need more critical than on the front line, where team leaders, unit managers, and human resource professionals struggle to find an easier way to use numbers to align people and processes with corporate purpose.
Demystifying such popular systems as balanced scorecards and Six Sigma, MEASURING WHAT MATTERS finally brings the power of measurement down from the lofty realm of strategy to where the real work gets done: inside work teams. Napier and McDaniel introduce the notion of balanced stakeholder feedback as they lay out a simple yet powerful process for translating organizational vision into measures, and measures into action. Immediately actionable at the team level, independent of outside consultants or company-wide commitment, this one-of-a-kind tool kit details step by step how to identify a team's key stakeholders, determine what each core group values and expects, and assess how well the team and stakeholders meet each other's expectations.
A Power Tools for Management section is jam-packed with instruments to gather measurable information, case studies to understand the data, reproducible exercises, and original diagnostic tools to unleash the power of metrics to improve leadership competencies, motivate teams, measure and build trust, reduce employee absenteeism, shorten production cycle times, and increase profits.

They also require at least a few proofreaders to remind them that discretion is often the better part of valor. Though the list of those who have endured my brainstorming is too long to enumerate, I would like to thank the smaller list of friends and colleagues who read portions of earlier drafts and helped me get the final manuscript into place: Joe Bernstein, Jeff Itell, Cathy Johnston, and Miranda Xafa. Several anonymous reviewers also provided useful feedback. I would also like to thank Charles River Associates Incorporated, where I was a consultant from 1998 to 2000, a Principal from 2000 to 2003, and which I recently rejoined as a consultant. CRA is a worldclass economic consulting firm that respects academic-style analytic thinking while providing its clients with valuable expertise and advice. More to the point, my affiliation with CRA gave me the privilege of getting to know some of the world’s best industrial organization economists and antitrust specialists. Read more...

Throughout, he highlights the relevance of economics to everyday life, providing a very human exploration of a technical subject.

Dasgupta covers enduring issues such as population growth, the environment, and poverty. For example, he explores how the world's looming population problems affect us at the local, national, and international level. Economics has the capacity to offer us deep insights into some of the most formidable problems of life. Here, Dasgupta goes beyond the basics to show it's innate effects on our history, culture, and lifestyles.

Therefore the best method of mastering models is working with them. In this book we present a collection of exercises and solutions which can be helpful in the comprehension of Statistics of Financial Markets. The exercises illustrate the theory by discussing practical examples in detail. We provide computational solutions for the problems, which are all calculated using R and Matlab. The corresponding Quantlets - a name we give to these program codes - are provided in this book. They follow the name scheme SFSxyz123 and can be downloaded from the Springer homepage. We have sought to strike a balance between theoretical presentation and practical challenges. The book is divided into three main parts, in which we discuss option pricing, time series analysis and advanced quantitative statistical techniques in finance. Read more...

The Italian chapter has been established in 2003, and since then, it has promoted the exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge among academics and professionals in Italy, devoted to the development, management, organization and use of Information Systems. The contents of this book are based on a selection of the best papers presented at the Annual Conference of the ItAIS, that has been held in Paris, in December 2008. The book adopts an interdisciplinary approach, recognizing the need to harness a number of different disciplines in both the theory and the practice of information systems. The work here presented is comprehensive and up-to-date in this subject. The contributions to this volume aim to disseminate academic knowledge and might be particularly relevant to practitioners in the field. Read more...

They believe that “smart data” as a corporate priority could revolutionize government or commercial enterprise performance much like “six sigma” or “total quality” as organizing paradigms have done in the past. This revolution has not yet taken place because data historically resides in the province of the information resources organization. Solutions that render data smart are articulated in “technoid” terms versus the language of the board room. While books such as Adaptive Information by Pollock and Hodgson ably describe the current state of the art, their necessarily technical tone is not conducive to corporate or agency wide qualitative change. Read more...

The Invisible Hand in Economics: How economists explain unintended social consequences

Because they know that if they transgress the rules there is a chance they will be caught in the act, and because they also know that if they are caught in the act they will be punished. Why is there a system of punishing transgressors in the first place? Well, because some (particularly those with the requisite powers and authorities) thought it a good idea to install such a system. This way of explaining social, aggregate behaviour in terms of the intentions and expectations of the people producing the behaviour seems to make perfectly good sense. Nobody would deny that this is roughly how desirable social, aggregate behaviour (in this case, people by and large abiding to the rules) often is secured. But it also has a trivial ring over it. If this type of explanation were the only type available to (and actually practised by) social scientists, then this would make them vulnerable to the oftcited charge that social science is not able to go beyond mere common sense (or ‘folk’) understandings. Read more...

Metal Men: Marc Rich and the Ten Billion Dollar Scam

Before there was Michael Milken or Ivan Boesky, Rich rose through the ranks to amass a multibillion dollar fortune in the halcyon days of high-flying commodities trading. But he did it by cutting corners and pulling the wool over the eyes of his competitors. Eventually his companies pleaded guilty to 38 counts of tax evasion, paying $90 million in fines. Rich fled to Switzerland, where he faced a potential jail term of over 300 years if he ever returned to the United States. This is a story of greed, corruption, and money gone wild, in truly astronomical proportions. Posing as a commodities trader, A. Craig Copetas goes behind the scenes to give us a riveting, true-to-life portrait of Rich's corrupt world and his incredible escape from the law.

Taking as a case study the wide-ranging EC investor-protection regime which now governs EC retail markets after an intense reform period, this critical, contextual and comparative examination of the nature of investor protection explores why the retail investor should be protected, whether retail investor engagement with the markets should be encouraged and how investor protection laws should be designed, particularly in light of the financial crisis. The book considers the implications of the EC's investor protection rules 'on the books' but also considers investor protection law and policy 'in action', drawing on experience from the UK retail market and in particular the Financial Services Authority's extensive retail market activities, including the recent Retail Distribution Review and the Treating Customers Fairly strategy.

Its supporters argue that using business principles to solve global problems is far more effective than more traditional approaches. What could be wrong with that?

Almost everything, argues former Ford Foundation director Michael Edwards. In this hard-hitting, controversial expose, he marshals a wealth of evidence to reveal that in reality, a market approach hurts more than it helps. Real change will come when business acts more like civil society, not the other way around.

The ideas, insights and practical issues addressed in the informed papers that compose the book should be valuable for academics and students of finance, and to those who provide legal and financial services. The book will be helpful also to European regulators who have yet to appreciate the importance of Islamic finance and its potential contribution to financial globalization as well as to European economic growth.'
- Abbas Mirakhor, Former Executive Director, IMF, US

This timely book examines the authorization of Shari'ah-compliant intermediaries as either credit institutions or as investment companies in the European Union.

The contributing authors explore the key topics of this area through differing yet parallel perspectives - for example, comparing economic and legal standpoints, looking at both European and national levels and considering both academic and technical approaches. The book discusses the common origin of Islamic and Western traditions in commercial and banking transactions, reviewing a period in which the Italian merchants and their organizations drove the rebirth of post-medieval society in trade and law. The editors investigate whether the Islamic banking and financial model complies with the European framework, spelling out the different experiences in single Member Read more...

When Money Was In Fashion: Henry Goldman, Goldman Sachs, and the Founding of Wall Street

This epic biography tells the story of the rise of Wall Street and the growth of Goldman Sachs from a small commercial paper company to the international banking business we know today. At its heart is the story of Henry Goldman, a man who spoke out passionately for his beliefs, understood the importance of the bottom line, and was known to chuckle, draw on his cigar, and remind his young proteges, "Just keep in mind . . . Money is always in fashion."

Though you will rarely find a mention of him in the official history of Goldman Sachs, it was Henry who established many of the practices of modern investment banking. He devised the plan that made Sears, Roebuck Co. the first publicly owned retail operation in the world, helped convince Woodrow Wilson to pass the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, and became a power player in the world of Wall Street finance at a time when Jews were considered outsiders.

The book traces Henry Goldman's hard-fought and often frustrating career with Goldman Sachs, a company founded by his father Marcus and fraught with professional rivalries. The tensions between the Goldman and Sachs families extended outside of the boardroom and into the larger world as the United States went to war. Henry’s steadfast support for Germany during World War I would tarnish his reputation and drive him from the firm. But his involvement with finance would continue throughout his life, as would close friendships with luminaries like Albert Einstein, whom he would la Read more...

Marketplace of the Gods: How Economics Explains Religion

Two centuries after Adam Smith illuminated the workings of the marketplace, a new movement among economists and social scientists is expanding his insights into a groundbreaking "economics of religion." Using cutting edge ideas from the behavioral sciences, and a deep knowledge of religious history, this new approach is making sense not only of past beliefs, but of religion today.

In Marketplace of the Gods, award-winning journalist Larry Witham tells the inside story of this expanding "economic approach" to religion, the puzzles it tries to solve, the controversies it has stirred, and the people who are making it happen. He shows that the economic approach, while evoking images of stock markets or accounting ledgers, actually begins with a simple idea about human beings as rational actors, judging costs and benefits in life. Every life has limits, so human experience is a series of trade-offs, balancing resources to make choices for the best possible benefits. As the economics of religion shows, this model can be applied to the rich story of the human race and its gods. Beginning with the individual, the choices in religion shape households, groups, movements, and entire "religious economies" of nations. On the one hand, this mixing of the profane and the sacred, the economic and the religious, is an exciting exchange of ideas between economics, sociology, psychology, history, and theology. On the other, it has spurred a lively protest. Indeed, for some, the economic appr Read more...

However, there is growing speculation that this era of hegemony is under threat as it faces huge trade deficits, a weaker currency, and stretched military resources. America's Global Advantage argues that, despite these difficulties, the US will maintain its privileged position. In this original and important contribution to a central subject in International Relations, Carla Norrlof challenges the prevailing wisdom that other states benefit more from US hegemony than the United States itself. By analyzing America's structural advantages in trade, money, and security, and the ways in which these advantages reinforce one another, Norrlof shows how and why America benefits from being the dominant power in the world. Contrary to predictions of American decline, she argues that American hegemony will endure for the foreseeable future. Read more...

Ninety to ninety-five per cent of bank transactions are executed electronically today. The Internet

Continued technology innovations, Web 2.0, social networking, app phones and mobility are also stretching traditional banking
models to the limit. BANK 2.0 reveals why customer behaviour is so rapidly changing, how branches will evolve, why cheques are disappearing, and why your mobile phone will replace your wallet all within the next 10 years.

In it, economic expert and bestselling author of Crash Proof, Peter Schiff teams up with his brother Andrew to apply their signature "take no prisoners" logic to expose the glaring fallacies that have become so ingrained in our country’s economic conversation.

Inspired by How an Economy Grows and Why It Doesn’t—a previously published book by the Schiffs’ father Irwin, a widely published economist and activist—How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes incorporates the spirit of the original while tackling the latest economic issues. With wit and humor, the Schiffs explain the roots of economic growth, the uses of capital, the destructive nature of consumer credit, the source of inflation, the importance of trade, savings, and risk, and many other topical principles of economics.

The tales told here may appear simple of the surface, but they will leave you with a powerful understanding of How an Economy Grows and Why it Crashes.

The New ICT Ecosystem: Implications for Policy and Regulation

The ICT sector is crucial as a driver of economic and social growth. Not only is it an important industry in its own right, but it also provides the communication and infrastructure without which modern economies could not function. How does this sector work? Why is it stronger in some countries than in others? What should companies, governments and regulators be doing to enhance its contribution? In The New ICT Ecosystem, Martin Fransman answers these and other questions by developing the idea of the ICT sector as an evolving ecosystem. He shows that some components of the ICT ecosystem, particularly the innovation process, work better in some countries and regions than in others. For example, the Internet content and applications layer of the ecosystem tends to work better in the US than in Europe or Asia. The analysis in this book enables policy makers and regulators to understand why some parts of the ICT ecosystem are underperforming and what can be done to enhance their performance. The previous edition of The New ICT Ecosystem won the 2008-10 Joseph Schumpeter Prize. • Winner of the 2008-10 Joseph Schumpeter Prize • Presents a highly original analysis of the ICT sector based on the metaphor of an evolving ecosystem • Provides important advice to policy makers and regulators about how underperforming parts of of the ICT sector can be improved

The Truth about Trade: The Real Impact of Liberalization

Clive George's provocative book examines the evidence both for and against world trade. He exposes the myths, and presents challenging new proposals for comprehensive reform. Based on ten years of in-depth research into the impacts of the trade agreements that are forged in the World Trade Organization and through regional negotiations it reveals that few of the claims made by the major players stand up to scrutiny, while many of the counter-claims lack rigor in their analysis of key issues. From its analysis of the relationships between trade, social transformation, economic growth and environmental sustainability, the book concludes with proposals for how the rules by which trade is governed might be reformed to help tackle the world's most pressing problems instead of making them worse.

Households as Corporate Firms: An Analysis of Household Finance Using Integrated Household Surveys and Corporate Financial Accounting

This investigation proposes a conceptual framework for measurement necessary for an analysis of household finance and economic development. The authors build on and, where appropriate, modify corporate financial accounts to create balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flows for households in developing countries, using an integrated household survey. The authors also illustrate how to apply the accounts to an analysis of household finance that includes productivity of household enterprises, capital structure, liquidity, financing, and portfolio management. The conceptualization of this analysis has important implications for measurement, questionnaire design, the modeling of household decisions, and the analysis of panel data.

Understanding the Process of Economic Change

In this landmark work, a Nobel Prize-winning economist develops a new way of understanding the process by which economies change. Douglass North inspired a revolution in economic history a generation ago by demonstrating that economic performance is determined largely by the kind and quality of institutions that support markets. As he showed in two now classic books that inspired the New Institutional Economics (today a subfield of economics), property rights and transaction costs are fundamental determinants. Here, North explains how different societies arrive at the institutional infrastructure that greatly determines their economic trajectories.

North argues that economic change depends largely on "adaptive efficiency," a society's effectiveness in creating institutions that are productive, stable, fair, and broadly accepted--and, importantly, flexible enough to be changed or replaced in response to political and economic feedback. While adhering to his earlier definition of institutions as the formal and informal rules that constrain human economic behavior, he extends his analysis to explore the deeper determinants of how these rules evolve and how economies change. Drawing on recent work by psychologists, he identifies intentionality as the crucial variable and proceeds to demonstrate how intentionality emerges as the product of social learning and how it then shapes the economy's institutional foundations and thus its capacity to adapt to changing circumstances.

The Architecture of Green Economic Policies

The role of environmental analysis in economic policy making has remained largely limited despite vast literature on environmental economics and governance. An effective integration of economic and environmental sciences with pragmatic design of institutions and policies is still urgently needed for practical use. This book offers a policy framework for economic policies that meaningfully integrate environmental and ecological resource factors. Based on analyses and new insights on sustainable development, this book provides pragmatic approaches for economic policy formulation and implementation, as well as for institutional reform. Thematic aspects include trade and environment, poverty and environment, recognition and accounting of factor limitations beyond traditional economic analyses, and an efficient choice of market and regulatory regimes for effective economic, environmental and social governance.

Moving Beyond Storytelling: Emerging Research in Microfinance

Despite the promise for international development, despite the proven track record of exceptional loan repayment rates, and despite the development of competitive markets in countries like Bolivia, Peru and Bangladesh or the global expansion of microfinance access to tens of millions of new clients, little research has explored the impact this expansion has had on global poverty and economic and social development in general. To address this gap, this volume brings together leaders in the microfinance industry and researchers representing a range of academic disciplines. Our goal is to outline a multidisciplinary research agenda for the field. The topics addressed in this volume and the questions posed can serve to guide social scientists, technology experts, development specialists, investors, microfinance practitioners, policymakers and students. Read more...

Global Warring: How Environmental, Economic, and Political Crises Will Redraw the World Map

In a perfect storm, the environment, the global economic system and geopolitics are all undergoing rapid, uncontrolled change. In the same way that the climate is in a state of flux, exhibiting erratic behavior before settling into a new norm, in the wake of the global economic crisis, many of the assumptions about the Western economic system have been destroyed, which leads to some troubling questions:

How vulnerable is the United States to more devastating hurricanes like Katrina?

What will the opening of the Arctic mean for Russian access into North American waters?

Will China's lack of clean, fresh water undermine its global ambitions?

Will India's increasingly erratic monsoon affect its economic growth?

Global Warring takes a hard look at these questions. Journalist and analyst Cleo Paskal identifies problem areas that are most likely to start wars, destroy economies and create failed states. Examining the most likely environmental change scenarios, she illuminates the ways in which they could radically alter human existence. A fascinating tour through our uncertain future, Global Warring also offers a controversial new way forward for the global economy and the worldwide environmental crisis. Read more...
