English Proverbs and Sayings

Proverbs, or sayings, are short sentences expressing a well-known truth, or a common fact familiar to experience. They cover many of the aspects of human life, and, as they refer mostly to everyday facts they are highly colloquial. Short and well constructed sentences, they are easily memorized. Proverbs of different countries often convey similar general ideas in an entirely different form.
This book is an attempt to group certain proverbs, or sayings, according to a possible similarity of ideas conveyed by them. These classified proverbs amount to over a thousand. They are given with Russian translations or, when possible, with Russian equivalents of a varying degree of adequacy. Read more...

Encyclopedia of African American Writing

This unique title profiles several hundred African American fiction and nonfiction writers from Colonial times to the present. The table of contents lists the authors alphabetically and then divides them into 17 categories (novels, short stories, slave narratives, etc.) and nine themes (Folktales, the Harlem Renaissance, Trickster Tales, etc.); authors whose work spans several categories are listed separately under each. The profiles themselves, presented alphabetically and ranging from a paragraph for less well known writers like Ai Ogawa to three pages for writers like Ralph Ellison or Terry McMillan, are both biographical and critical, although the amount of criticism varies. Included in each entry are the writer's birth and death dates, the categories into which he or she fits, and any pseudonyms. Black-and-white illustrations, references, genre lists, a comprehensive index, and chronologies of the writer's life dates and of African American literary firsts complete this impressive title. Read more...

Power Speaking - The Art of the Exceptional Public Speaker

Product Description
This innovative companion integrates key concepts and ideas about public speaking into a clear, step-by-step, transformational method. Fuelled by the idea that the best speaking techniques are ineffective without personal essence, the author, a master speaking coach with a track record of accomplished actors and Fortune 500 clients, teaches emerging speakers how to grow the necessary skills and unleash their inner power. The book is divided in three parts or proficiency levels - Mastering the Basics, Making the Connection, and Polishing the Core - that provide systematic plan to self-development. Readers start with the use of voice and body movements, move on to learn the use of personal stories, intent listening, and positioning or reframing a topic, and finally undergo a thorough phase of self-examination: What personal values drive you as you speak? How spontaneous are you in front of a group? Where is fear blocking you from "breaking through"? Organized as a self-coaching guide, the book is carefully structured into concise chapters and subchapters and packed wit assignments, checklists, and other track-keeping tools. Read more...

Opening with an outline of national, regional, and social variation in English, the book details descriptive and prescriptive approaches, and attitudes to English amongst both native and non-native speakers. This is followed by an account of the development of grammar, and a review of modern approaches to this complex subject. The central section of the book is a presentation of current English grammar at sentence, clause, phrase, and word level; with the last chapters covering grammar in relation to discourse, word-formation, lexis, pronunciation and intonation, punctuation, and spelling. A full index is provided, and examples of usage are drawn from a wide range of sources, including use of the new International Corpus of English at University College London. Written in a readable and absorbing style, The Oxford English Grammar is an essential reference for English-speakers around the world. Read more...

Edspeak: A Glossary of Education Terms, Phases, Buzzwords, Jargon

Every profession has its own language. Law, medicine, science, business, economics, psychology, sociology—each of these fields has evolved a specialized vocabulary that its members use to communicate with one another. Perhaps this language is necessary to discuss sophisticated ideas that are beyond the understanding of the average citizen; perhaps not. The result, if not the intent, is to mystify the public.
Education is no exception. Like those of other professions, the language of education is often incomprehensible to those outside the field. But more than other professions, education should strive to be intelligible to nonprofessionals. Educators must be able to speak clearly and intelligibly to all those who care about what happens in classrooms. It matters not only for the wellbeing of students but also for the well-being of public education.Parents and citizens who are likely to vote on bond issues or to serve on local school boards need to understand the language of education, just as newcomers to and even veterans in the profession do. Read more...

Assessing Writing

The assessment of language learners is having a growing impact in English language teaching and applied linguistics. A formal evaluation of students' writing abilities is important for language teachers in order to assess the pedagogical needs of their students. While there has been a considerable body of work undertaken on assessing the writing abilities of native speakers, the issues surrounding the assessment of second language learners' writing abilities are still emerging. At present, no one volume has explored these issues and their implications for language teaching practitioners wishing to evaluate their students' writing. This book outlines in an accessible manner the major tenets of research in the field and provide language teachers with guidelines to design and develop suitable writing assessment tasks for their students. Read more...

The Grouchy Grammarian

Are you tormented by the lie/lay conundrum?

Do you find yourself stuck between floaters and danglers?

Do your subjects and your verbs refuse to agree?

If so, you’re not alone. Some of the most prominent professionals in TV broadcasting and at major newspapers and magazines–people who really should know better–are guilty of making all-too-common grammatical errors. In this delightfully amusing, clever guide, Thomas Parrish points out real-life grammar gaffes from top-notch publications such as the New York Times and the New Yorker to illustrate just how widespread these errors are. With red pen in hand, Parrish’s fictional friend the Grouchy Grammarian leads the charge, examining the forty-seven most common mistakes in English and imparting the basics of good grammar with a charming mixture of fussiness and common sense. All of which makes The Grouchy Grammarian the most entertaining, accessible how-not-to guide you’ll ever read. Read more...

Ukrainian for Speakers of English is intended for individuals who have no knowledge of Ukrainian. It is suitable for university students, senior high school students, and adult learners in a home study situation. All of the material is presented from the point of view of a student who knows how to speak English, but who may not know the formal rules of English grammar. Before a new point in Ukrainian grammar is introduced, students are first reminded about what they know, either formally or informally, about a similar structure in English. Read more...

Each chapter contains several high-interest readings on a specific controversial and thought-provoking topic.

In the 30 years that I have been in English language training CELT), I have despaired of the lack of stimulating reading texts, accompanied by activities written specifically to energize and inspire the mature English learner. Why aren't many ESL reading texts sufficient? Although ESL learners may not yet have mastered English syntax, they still have interests beyond the mundane, and they certainly have ample reasoning ability. And while many reading texts are written about subjects of broad appeal, virtually all of them avoid topics that are deemed "too controversial" for the classroom setting. Unfortunately, many of those neglected topics are of great interest and relevance to adult lives. By steering course themes away from controversy, the instrucror also steers students away from motivating and stimulating topics. Read more...

101 American English Idioms

101 American English Idioms is designed to help bridge the gap between "meaning" and "thrust" of American colloquialisms by providing a situation and a graphic illustration of that situation, so that the imagery created by the expression can be felt, rather than simply learned as a stock definition.
The book is divided into nine sections. The title of each section reflects a notion or a manifestation of the physical world, the world of behavior, or the world of the senses with which the reader may easily identify.
It is hoped that the natural tone of the language of the situations in which the idiom is presented will help to convey the feeling of the idiom and the circumstances under which it may be used. The illustrations graphically depicting the meaning of the components of the expressions not only add an element of humor, hut also serve to highlight the contrast between the literal and actual meaning of the idioms as presented in the text.
An index is included to facilitate recall and location of the expressions.
101 American English Idioms is intended primarily for all students of English. Nevertheless, because of the graphic humor of the idioms in caricature, native speakers of English will also find the book refreshingly entertaining. Read more...

Current Puns: Why does our language groan with the weight of puns? What exactly is a pun? And who, or what, is the Thief of Bad Gags? Metaphor: the English language is chock-full of maritime metaphors - cock up, taken aback, chip on your shoulder and show a leg. And, with the help of a Greek removals firm, we also find the origin of the word 'metaphor'. Quotation: the uses and misuses of quotations are revealed, and there is also a frank confession from a quotation compiler, which we cannot divulge here. Cliche: this title features sick parrots and the cliche crisis that affected the writing of Flaubert, Joyce and Eliot, and helped shape modern language and culture.

Files:
1. Puns - 25:08
2. Metaphors - 25:34
3. Quatations - 27:22
4. Cliches - 26:14

Four 30-minute BBC audio programs presented by Stephen Fry indulging his delight in the English language. Included in this release: CURRENT PUNS: why weak puns and lame jokes are important and oil the social wheels; METAPHOR: from the freshly minted to the ancient fossils embedded in our language; QUOTATION: literary quotations, clever bon mots, malapropisms; CLICHES: how original coinages gradually become the stock-in-trade of lazy writers. Read more...

Although still widely assumed, the parametric theory of variation has in recent years been subject to re-evaluation and critique. The Null Subject Parameter, which determines among other things whether or not a language allows the suppression of subject pronouns, is one of the best-known and most widely discussed examples of a parameter. Nevertheless its status in current syntactic theory is highly controversial. This book is a defence of the parametric approach to linguistic variation, set within the framework of the Minimalist Program. It discusses syntactic variation in the light of recent developments in linguistic theory, focusing on issues such as the formal nature of minimalist parameters, the typology of null-subject language systems and the way in which parametric choices can be seen to underlie the synchronic and diachronic patterns observed in natural languages.

It appears that no communication system of equivalent power exists elsewhere in the animal kingdom. Any normal human child will learn a language based on rather sparse data in the surrounding world, while even the brightest chimpanzee, exposed to the same environment, will not. Why not? How, and why, did language evolve in our species and not in others? Since Darwin's theory of evolution, questions about the origin of language have generated a rapidly-growing scientific literature, stretched across a number of disciplines, much of it directed at specialist audiences. The diversity of perspectives - from linguistics, anthropology, speech science, genetics, neuroscience and evolutionary biology - can be bewildering. Tecumseh Fitch cuts through this vast literature, bringing together its most important insights to explore one of the biggest unsolved puzzles of human history. Read more...

Possible-worlds semantics articulates the view that the meanings of words contribute to determining which possible worlds would make a sentence true, and which would make it false. In the first book-length examination from this viewpoint, M.J. Cresswell argues that the nonsemantic facts on which semantic facts supervene are facts about the causal interactions between the linguistic behavior of speakers and the facts in the world that they are speaking about. Read more...

An Introduction To Semiotics

The interpretive science of semiotics offers powerful analytical tools for the application of many disciplines to the study of perception. Semiotics is the study of signs, and as such, is of relevance to a wide spectrum of scholars and professionals, including social scientists, psychologists, artists, graphic designers, and students of literature. Semiosis - the production and interpretation of linguistic and visual signs - is innate to human beings of all societies. From the simplest of hand gestures to the most complex diagrams and charts, the sign is key to the communication of ideas. Thomas A. Sebeok examines, in an engaging, readable style, how the sign mediates between bodily experience and abstract thought.

This updated second edition of Signs combines some of Sebeok's most important essays with a new general introduction, introductory passages at the outset of each chapter, a glossary, and brief biographies of the major semioticians. From an overview of the discipline to a more detailed exploration of sign categories, the author powerfully demonstrates the co-dependency of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Aimed primarily at undergraduate and graduate students, this engaging book also has plenty to offer any general reader who is interested in exploring and analyzing the complex sign systems we so often take for granted. Read more...

It contains a critical empirical assessment of the various hypotheses, lists the implications for linguistic theory and provides alternative analyses. Issues covered are: (i) the semantics of childrens root infinitives (tense, modality and aspect), (ii) the relation between lexical, morphological and syntactic development in the domain of finiteness, (iii) the role of the input, and (iv) the interference of cognitive development. Typological focus is on Germanic languages. Read more...

The Art of Writing & Speaking The English Language

It is the basis of culture, as we all know; but it is infinitely more than that: it is the basis of business. No salesman can sell anything unless he can explain the merits of his goods in effective English (among our people), or can write an advertisement equally effective, or present his ideas, and the facts, in a letter. Indeed, the way we talk, and write letters, largely determines our success in life.
Now it is well for us to face at once the counter-statement that the most ignorant and uncultivated men often succeed best in business, and that misspelled, ungrammatical advertisements have brought in millions of dollars. It is an acknowledged fact that our business circulars and letters are far inferior in correctness to those of Great Britain; yet they are more effective in getting business. As far as spelling is concerned, we know that some of the masters of literature have been atrocious spellers and many suppose that when one can sin in such company, sinning is, as we might say, a "beauty spot", a defect in which we can even take pride.
First published in 1903.

Classroom Instruction That Works With English Language

As more and more English language learners (ELLs) are included in mainstream classrooms, what can we do to ensure that they understand academic content and develop their English language skills? To answer this question, authors Jane Hill and Kathleen Flynn have examined decades of research, interviewed mainstream teachers with ELLs in their classrooms, and reviewed the classroom recommendations from Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock s seminal Classroom Instruction That Works (2001) through an ELL lens. The result is Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners a comprehensive guide to helping elementary school students at all levels of English language acquisition succeed.

The strategies discussed in the book include homework and practice, summarization and note taking, and use of nonlinguistic representations, among many others. For each strategy, the authors provide a summary of the research, detailed examples of how to modify the strategy for use with ELLs in mainstream classrooms, and teacher accounts of implementation. Because ELLs face cultural hurdles as well as linguistic ones, this book also shows teachers how to glean insight into students backgrounds and address the cultural biases inherent in many classroom practices.

Accommodating English language learners is one of the greatest challenges educators face today. Just as different levels of fluency require different approaches, so too do different backgrounds and languages. This practical, re Read more...

For twenty years, Stanley Bing has offered insight, wisdom, and advice from inside the belly of one of the great corporate beasts. In one essential volume, here is all you need to know to master your career, your life, and, when necessary, other weaker life forms.

Bing knows whereof he speaks. He has lived the last two decades working inside a gigantic multinational corporation, kicking and screaming all the way up the ladder. During that time, he has seen it all -- mergers, acquisitions, layoffs, the death of the three-martini lunch -- and has himself been painfully reengineered a number of times. He has made a million friends and seen many of them prosper and grow, and sadly seen others sink into consultancy. He has eaten and drunk way too much, stayed in hotels far too good for him, waited for limousines in the pouring rain, and enjoyed it all. Sort of. Most important, Bing has seen management at its best and worst, and he has practiced both as he made the transition from an inexperienced player who hated pompous senior management to a polished strategist who kind of sees its point of view now and then.

Bing's many fans from his days at Esquire and those who enjoy his current column in Fortune know that his take on the workplace is pure storytelling at its best -- sophisticated, amusing, and driven by the kind of insight that only a true insider can possess.

The Big Bing provides a corporate mole's-eye view of the soci Read more...

David Young presents English grammar in a coherent and lively way. He dispels the popular notion among students that grammar is simply a set of dreary rules and argues for the importance of grammar in describing the structure and function of language itself. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter and the book includes integrated diagrams and a glossary of technical terms at the back of the book. Read more...

NTC's American Idioms Dictionary by Richard A. Spears PhD

Completely revised, updated, reorganized, and enlarged with 600 new entries. Essential for writers and learners of American English, it features a unique new format, an appendix of 500 fixed-order phrases--such as fast and furious--that cannot be reversed, and a Phrase-Finder Index for easy lookups of even partially remembered phrases.

From Library Journal
Idioms are figures of speech that can defy literal interpretation and confound both native and non-native speakers of American English. This resource covers 8500 "proverbs, informal phrases and common sayings." Phrases are arranged alphabetically by the first word of the phrase, excluding articles such as a, an, and the. Typical entries provide brief definitions and examples of usage. The phrase finder index links keywords such as "cranny" to phrases such as "every nook and cranny." An appendix (not seen) features irreversible two- or three-word phrases (e.g., fast and furious, not furious and fast). Readers seeking the stories behind inscrutable expressions may choose to consult slang or historical dictionaries instead. Libraries that already own American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms or Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang may wish to pass on this work.DElizabeth Connor, Medical Univ. of South Carolina Lib., Charleston Read more...

A Basic Course in Anthropological Linguistics

Language can be studied from several angles. The focus on the relation between language, thought and culture is known as anthropological linguistics (AL). This text constitutes a basic introduction to the subject matter and techniques of AL. Traditionally, anthropological linguists have aimed to document and study the languages of indigenous cultures, especially North American ones. Today, however, the purview of this exciting science has been extended considerably to encompass the study of language as a general cultural phenomenon, and to determine genealogical relations among languages, so as to recreate ancient cultures through them. In non-technical language, with plenty of examples related to languages across the world, this book introduces the basic notions, concepts, and techniques of AL. It also discusses the origin and evolution of language, focusing on the comparison and reconstruction of language families. Its treatment of techniques for analyzing sounds, words, sentences and meanings introduces the student to what must be understood about language and its structure in order to apply that knowledge to the study of thought and culture. The final two chapters examine how languages vary according to social factors and how languages influence cognition. To enhance the text's pedagogical utility, a set of practical activities and topics for study accompany each of its eight chapters. A glossary of technical terms is also included.
The Syntax and Semantics of Discourse Markers: Continuum Studies in Theoretical Linguistics

In this book, Miriam Urgelles-Col examines the syntax and semantics of discourse markers. A discourse marker can loosely be defined as an item such as well or now, coming at the beginning of an utterance and marking a boundary between one part of spoken discourse and the next, signalling the start of a new section of the discourse. They perform important functions in conversation - but defining discourse markers is problematic in itself. The syntactic approach employed in this book to describe discourse markers is Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) which is relevant in a theory of discourse because it provides a framework in which all levels of grammar can be integrated. Since discourse markers operate at discourse level, a well developed discourse theory is required - in this case, Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT) is employed. During the course of the book, Minimal Recourse Semantics is explained as it provides an integration of HPSG and SDRT. The approach described is exemplified with an analysis of 'anyway'. This book offers a detailed overview of research on discourse markers covering different areas of linguistics: from a discourse analysis point of view, to a Relevance Theory perspective going through a computational linguistics approach. Moreover, the book contains a precise summary of HPSG and the rec Read more...

Anthropology of Writing: Understanding Textually-Mediated Worlds

We live in a textually-mediated world where writing is central to society, its cultural practices and institutions. Writing has been the subject of much research but it is usually highly visible and valued texts that are studied - the work of novelists, poets and scholars. The studies included in this book examine every day acts of writing and their significance. Ordinary quotidian writing may be viewed as mundane and routine, but it is central to how societies operate and the ways individuals relate to each other and to institutions. Examples discussed in the book including writing in areas such as farming, photo-sharing, childcare work and health care. The chapters are united in their approach to examining this writing as cultural practice. The book also brings together two important traditions of this type of study: the Anglophone and Francophone. The work of French scholars in this field is made accessible for the first time to the Anglophone world. The insights and research in this collection will appeal to all linguists, anthropologists, sociolinguistics and cultural theorists.

From the preface:

The art of using one's native tongue correctly and forcibly is acquired for the most
part through imitation and practice, and is not so much a matter of knowledge as
of habit. As regards English, then, the first duty of our schools is to set before
pupils excellent models, and, in all departments of school-work, to keep a watchful
eye on the innumerable acts of expression, oral and written, which go to form
habit. Since, however, pupils come to school with many of their habits of
expression already formed on bad models, our schools must give some attention
to the special work of pointing out common errors of speech, and of leading pupils
to convert knowledge of these errors into new and correct habits of expression.
This is the branch of English teaching in which this little book hopes to be useful.
All the "Exercises in English" with which I am acquainted consist chiefly of
"sentences to be corrected." To such exercises there are grave objections. If, on
the one hand, the fault in the given sentence is not seen at a glance, the pupil is
likely, as experience has shown, to pass it by and to change something that is not
wrong. If, on the other hand, the fault is obvious, the exercise has no value in the
formation of habit. Take, for example, two "sentences for correction" which I
select at random from one of the most widely used books of its class: "I kn Read more...
