A Jane Austen Encyclopedia

Perhaps the first modern novelist, Jane Austen (1775-1817) has left an indelible mark on the world of letters. She is best known as the author of penetrating studies of domestic life and manners, and her novels such as Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), and Mansfield Park (1814) continue to be read and appreciated today. Yet Austen also wrote numerous other pieces and a substantial body of letters. While her novels have received large amounts of critical attention, scholars have also increasingly studied her other writings, and Austen scholarship continues to grow each year. This reference book is an accurate, comprehensive, and detailed guide to her life and career. A chronology outlines the principal events in her life and places her within larger literary and historical contexts. The several hundred alphabetically arranged entries that follow identify characters and family members, discuss works and themes, and synthesize the large body of criticism that has grown around her works. Every one of her texts, including all of her minor writings, has a separate entry, as have most of her fictional characters. Entries for individual works typically provide details of composition and publication, a plot summary and critical commentary, a list of characters, and bibliographical references. The volume closes with an extensive bibliography of works by and about her. Read more...

Encyclopedia Britannica 2009 Book of the Year

Though many concerns were raised about China’s prospects for mounting the Olympic Games, Beijing triumphed in spectacular form and staged many of the sporting events in uniquely designed venues. Later in the year, the global economic collapse sent the financial markets plunging and investors scrambling and forced consumers to tighten their belts.

Worldwide, populations that were already struggling to meet basic needs were further hampered by soaring food prices. Meanwhile, freegans, individuals dedicated to finding alternatives to a consumerist economy, munched on discarded vegetarian foodstuffs. A fractious U.S. presidential campaign resulted in the election of Democrat Barack Obama, who made history as the first African American to win that office...
The wrap-up of 2008 awaits your perusal and promises to provide a historical look at one of the most memorable years in history... Read more...

The two volumes include nearly 400 substantive entries on genetic diseases and conditions as well as information on basic genetics concepts such as DNA, chromosomes, genetic testing, and pedigree analysis and construction (genetic family history). An advisory board of seven distinguished genetics specialists (clinical geneticists and genetic counselors) oversaw the accuracy of the text, which is authored by an international slate of clinicians, genetic counselors, and medical writers. Each of the alphabetically arranged entries follows a standard format definition, description, genetic profile, demographics, and signs and symptoms designed to answer the questions healthcare consumers actually ask. In addition, entries provide citations for further reading, contact information for support and advocacy organizations, and recommendations for notable web sites. Cross references for subjects without entries are interspersed throughout the work and are easy to follow. Read more...

The Aral Sea Encyclopedia

Many have seen the satellite photos evidencing the startling shrinkage and deterioration of the sea, as it was a few decades ago and how it appears today. Whereas the Aral Sea was the world s fourth-largest inland body of water in 1960, it has now shrunk to a small fraction of that within three increasingly saline and polluted parts, primarily due to the diversion of waters for agricultural irrigation. The Aral Sea Encyclopedia is devoted to the remarkable phenomenon of the possibility of Aral Sea s imminent disappearance from the Earth in the time span of a single human generation.
It first describes the sea before it started drying-out, and then the actions and efforts of the Central Asian countries, as well as the international community, to mitigate the socioeconomic and environmental hazards caused by this desiccation and increasing salinity. This comprehensive reference not only addresses the key environmental issues and presents national and international programs. It also documents the history of the related research studies, the involvement of prominent historical figures, and the chronology of events over three centuries, which became the milestones in the economic development of the Aral Sea and its subsequent diminution.
The publication of the Aral Sea Encyclopedia initiates a group of similar valuable references that gather mult Read more...

The editors of this authoritative guide to American literature are experts both in literary criticism and in the teaching of literature to secondary school students, and the tone and content of this encyclopedia reflect this. Entries for disorders include a definition, description, causes and symptoms, demographics, diagnosis, treatments, prognosis, and prevention. Those for medications contain the definition, purpose, description, recommended dosage, precautions, side effects, and interactions. Entries for herbs and supplements have a leaf icon next to the heading. All entries have a resource list of print and electronic sources and organizations to contact. One hundred black-and-white photographs and charts illustrate the text. A color photo gallery repeated in both volumes has enhanced versions of some of the photographs. The editors define analytical chemistry as the measurement, characterization and mapping of chemical species or systems varying from (1) the components of life, such as proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, clinical samples, biomedical spectroscopy, forensics; (2) threats and safeguards to life as in chemical weapons agents, pesticides, environment, industrial hygiene and forensics; (3) life critical or enhancing analyses, such as food and pharmaceuticals; and (4) analyses required by industry, such as coatings, particle size, polymers, rubbers, metals, pulp and paper, process, petroleum and surfaces. The techniques utilized span the in-situ analysis of soil, water, waste, air and the human body, to laboratory analyses, remote sensing and stellar spectroscopy. Read more...

A better all-around information book than Hugh Johnson's Atlas, in my opinion. Mshomba provides a systematic study of Africa as it relates to the World Trade Organization. He examines the WTO's enforcement mechanism; the WTO's broadened mandate, illustrated by the Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights; agriculture in the Doha Round; issues relating to transparency in government procurement; and the endeavor to streamline assistance to developing countries through an "Aid for Trade" initiative. The author integrates theory and practice, with a clear presentation of important economic concepts. He provides a rigorous analysis of key issues and proposals. He presents African countries as having an important role to play in the WTO, especially as they actively engage in bargaining through various coalitions. Mshomba acknowledges that WTO negotiations will always be complex and at times contentious due to wide economic and political differences between countries. He views the differences, however, as creating opportunities for a mutually beneficial exchange of goods, services, and ideas.

This is the superbly satisfying compendium of weird factoids too interesting to be contained in your average encyclopedia. Daring to cross-reference the un-cross-reference-able, to alphabetize what cannot be alphabetized, and to deliver the highest concentration of fun that can fit in one book's spine, this information is too useless to waste:
In Denmark, pigs go 'knor'; in Germany, horses go 'prrrh'; in ancient Greece, dogs went 'au au.' Italians sneeze 'ecci ecci.'

A teacher in Italy was disciplined in 1996 for passing students exam answers hidden in salami sandwiches.
In 1957 the U.S. air force completed a survey of the Atlantic Ocean but refused to divulge its width on the grounds that the information might be of military use to the Russians.

In Paris in 1740 a cow was hanged in public following its conviction for sorcery. Read more...

The 315 articles cover the major functional areas of business: accounting, economics, finance, information systems, law, management, and marketing. Special emphasis is given to the topics of careers and business ethics. While some articles emphasize the historical development of a topic, others focus on current business activity and conditions. The second edition contains more than 30 new articles, most of them related to technology, new areas of business knowledge, international topics, and new organizations and legislation.

Entries are arranged alphabetically and tend to be 500 to 1,500 words in length. A small number of black-and-white photos, charts, and graphs is included. Each entry is accompanied by a 5- to 10-item bibliography of books and, occasionally, Web sites. A few see and see also references are provided. All the articles are signed, and most of the authors are associated with universities. However, some of the names in the contributors list are unaccompanied by any credentials or organizational affiliation.

The entries range widely in scope and cover topics such as Behavioral science movement, Discount stores, Electronic commerce, Information processing, Money supply, Public relations, and Taxation. The books are written from a global perspective (the editors are in the U.K. and the advisory board is diverse and internationally based), and touch on global issues and organizations. These books also offer excellent insight into the tumultuous reorganization of the United States security agencies and the complexities of problems brought about by the concept of homeland security. The typical Anti-American/pro-European world view is restrained, and criticism is directed at organizations, agencies, and politics on both sides of the Atlantic. It is refreshing to see a resource on this topic written by scientists and teachers rather than another insider "tell all." There are some errors and omissions (I would have liked to have seen greater coverage of Asian issues), but it is good to discover a resource in this area that is dedicated to fact rather than opinion. Perhaps most important for students is that the editors and publishers were unselfish in directing readers to excellent outside resources for more advanced study.
The Encyclopedia of Strikes in American History

Against employers and their goons, against the police, the National Guard, local, state, and national officials, against racist vigilantes, against their union leaders, and against each other, American workers have walked off the job for higher wages, better benefits, bargaining rights, legislation, job control, and just plain dignity. At times, their actions have motivated groundbreaking legislation, defining new rights for all citizens; at other times they have led to loss of workers' lives. This comprehensive encyclopedia is the first detailed collection of historical research on strikes in America. To provide the analytical tools for understanding strikes, the volume includes two types of essays - those focused on an industry or economic sector, and those focused on a theme. Each industry essay introduces a group of workers and their employers and places them in their economic, political, and community contexts. The essay then describes the industry's various strikes, including the main issues involved and outcomes achieved, and assesses the impact of the strikes on the industry over time. Thematic essays address questions that can only be answered by looking at a variety of strikes across industries, groups of workers, and time, such as, why the number of strikes has declined since the 1970s, or why t Read more...

If someone has told us then that we would end up chronicling the evolution of special education, we probably would not have believed him or her. It was enough, at that time, to have created the fi rst Encyclopedia of Special Education; nearly 2,000 pages, thousands of entries, and more than 400 authors coming together to cement this fl edgling fi eld that was full of hope and imagination. So, here we are more than 20 years later, near the end of our guardianship of the Encyclopedia. It is our old friend, and it has been our mentor, our judge, and our inspiration. During the editing of the second and third editions, we are well aware of how life, research, and standards have changed for those of us who practice in special education. It is an interesting process to look back and see how the Encyclopedia has changed over the years and how it has really provided a mirror of the zeitgeist of the times in which we live. Read more...

"Universe" is a well-written, extremely informative book about everything you'd ever want to know about the universe, from early astronomy to the solar system to the life of stars, and much more. My favorite thing about the book is the detailed illustrations. For example, there are large, detailed images of four of Jupiter's moons, which is more than you'll find in many space books.
Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer, 3 edition

From 2nd Ed

In a statement immediately preceding the introduction, the publisher states clearly that this encyclopedia is "is intended to supplement, not replace, consultation with a physician or other healthcare professional." That said, this second edition of a work first published in 2001 is an excellent resource for anyone seeking a greater understanding of cancer.
Specific cancers, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and much more are discussed thoroughly and in straightforward lay language. Cancer biology, Carcinogenesis, Cancer prevention, Clinical trials, and other cancer-related topics are among the 450 or more entries presented in A-Z format. Uniform entries on specific types of cancer begin with a definition, a description, and demographic and statistical information before focusing on the details--causes, symptoms, diagnosis (including tests and procedures), e-treatment, prognosis, patient coping, home care, prevention, and special concerns. The frank and rather clinical-sounding treatment discussion includes staging, standards, and, when appropriate, alternative therapies, anticipated side effects, and even questions for the doctor. Key terms used in the discussion are identified and explained; clinical trials are noted.

Entries on drugs, medical procedures, and therapies are based on the same format. Each begins with the definition, a statement of purpose or use, and a description. Drugs are identified by their chemical formulae and generic and brand names Read more...

Drawing from a wide variety of sources, it provides readers with a concise yet thorough review of what we know about all kinds of addictive behavior.

Addiction surveys both the science of addiction and its history in the United States with two main sections: a narrative of the history of addiction as a scientific and public policy issue in the United States followed by a series of alphabetically organized entries focused on organizations, individuals, and events that have impacted our thinking about addiction. Much of the work focuses on substance abuse—alcohol, tobacco, opiates, cocaine—but the book also examines behaviors that have only recently been recognized as potentially addictive, including gambling, sexual activity, Internet usage, and more. Read more...

It focuses particularly on placenames with official or semiofficial status rather than nicknames or colloquial abbreviations. Alternate placenames are important for historical and geographical reasons, and although they predominate in countries that have undergone wars and invasions, such alternate names can equally well result from political or administrative changes. In addition to the factual data related to each entry, the dictionary also comments on names and their origins where appropriate. Appendices focus on placenames in non-English languages and on places which have been renamed in fictional works.

Unlike existing works, this encyclopedia examines the complexities of rapidly changing global conditions that have dispersed modern architectural types, movements, styles, and building practices across traditional geographic and cultural boundaries.

Volume 1 has a list of entries and a separate list of entries arranged by theme. Examples of topics include Acoustics; Bank of China Tower; Concrete; Gas station; Israel; Paul, Bruno; Tent; and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

There are more than 550 contributors, including such well-known writers as Peter Burke, Nathan Glazer, Arthur Hertzberg, Moshe Idel, Margaret L. King, and Martin E. Marty. Entries include those on the same topics but entirely rewritten from the original (City, Nationalism, Time) along with those that could barely have been thought of in the mid-1970s (Computer science, Sexual harassment, Visual culture). Just as telling, reflecting the scholarly shift over the past 30 years, are entries that no longer exist, such as Baconianism; Faith, hope, and charity; and Uniformitarianism and catastrophism. Read more...

The first edition won the 1987 Dartmouth Medal awarded by ALA's Reference and User Services Association and was designated as one of four core reference sources for a "Bicentennial Bookshelf" by the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 1992, a one-volume supplement was published, covering major constitutional developments and decisions since 1985 as well as topics omitted from the original set. When it came time to consider publishing a second supplementary volume, the editors wisely decided that it would be too unwieldy for users to have to consult the main volume plus two supplements to obtain thorough coverage of a topic. Instead, the editors opted to produce one new set, which would not only update many existing articles and cover new topics of importance but also include the original content of the first edition and its supplement. Read more...

This work represents decades of research and spans television's entire history. While documentation regarding cast and personnel is now often found online, descriptions of the shows from authoritative sources are still not widely available. Terrace fills that gap with this work, which covers over 9,100 shows (including pilots!) and constitutes the most comprehensive documentation of TV series ever published. All the traditional genres are here along with show genres not well covered elsewhere - including children's programming, talk shows, game shows, stage plays, women's programming, dance, and more. Read more...

With more than 450 entries providing readable definitions, explanations, and descriptions of the major stories, gods and goddesses, places, and beliefs, this book is the perfect resource for young people who want to know more about ancient Celtic myths.
This volume is part of the Mythology A to Z series from Facts On File. Each volume has a similar format: an introduction includes a history of the culture(s), an explanation of the book, and a pronunciation guide, followed by a time line and a map. The main text is an alphabetical listing of names, places, and ideas important to the mythology of the culture. The definitions are mostly brief--a single paragraph--although some are as lengthy as a page. Many black-and-white illustrations, mostly of artifacts, enhance the text. Each volume includes a good bibliography with Internet addresses.

The series is designed for young people in junior high and high school, and it is appropriate for younger children who are better readers or interested in mythology. Except in the Celtic volume there is not much storytelling since the volumes are intended to be encyclopedias rather than collections of stories. They will help students to make connections between mythological characters and images and compare similarities between cultures. Whatever the reason, colonialism still has its effects on the modern world, whether it led to the birth of a new nation (as in the case of the U.S.) or helps to explain simmering tensions that remain in Africa and India. Editor Benjamin is a professor of Latin American history at Central Michigan University; according to his preface, this set "provides the most comprehensive, accessible, and international reference work about the entirety of WesternColonialism from the Portuguese voyages of Prince Henry the Navigator in the fifteenth century to the making of feature films about British colonialism in India in the twenty-first century." The encyclopedia contains 411 articles by 234 academically affiliated contributors and is liberally illustrated with more than 300 illustrations, maps, and charts. A thematic outline is included in the first volume; the set concludes with selected text from 29 primary sources (for example, Monroe Doctrine, Treaty of Utrecht) and a comprehensive index. Read more...

It offers a comprehensive investigation of ancient Greece, from the dawning of Minoan civilization to the conquest of Rome–2000 years of a remarkable civilization that left an indelible imprint on human history. The original format of this volume has not changed, but many of the alphabetical articles have been updated and rewritten.

New and expanded material includes pieces on Aesop, architecture, black peoples, Euripides, Jews, magic, land warfare, the climate and landscape of Greece, and wine. In addition, there are modern transliterations of ancient Greek (e.g., Hephaistos instead of Hephaestus), and a bibliography after each entry. Accurate cross-references, an information-packed time line, and a thorough index add to the volume's usefulness. The black-and-white maps, photographs, and illustrations are all high quality. This is a first-rate purchase for libraries on a topic of endless inquiry and fascination.–Hillary Jan Donitz-Goldstein, formerly at New York Public Library Read more...

Interest in the problem of crime began centuries ago, and in the 18th century, after several European countries experienced social unrest, writings about crime began to appear. During the 19th century, social scientists studied social problems, including crime and responses to it. Interest in criminology in the United States began in the late 19th century and flourished in the 20th century. Initially there were two major areas in the study of criminology: theoretical and applied criminology. Theoretical criminology included the etiology of crime, theories of criminality, typologies of crime and criminals, and the extent of crime. Applied criminology included the study of justice agencies and processes, often referred to as criminal justice, as well as the law. Today, the terms criminology and criminal justice are often used interchangeably, and the dichotomy between the two is less clear. For example, some of the subject matter in many criminology and criminal justice textbooks often overlaps although the original foci of each remain. Read more...

The Encyclopedia of World Environmental History provides much needed explanation of urgent social and environmental issues - from urbanization to water shortages, climate change to the extinction of species - in articles replete with the stories of human and natural history.

World historians, anthropologists, geographers, and biologists from 26 countries have pooled their knowledge for the first time to trace the interaction of humankind and nature over the course of human history, across cultures, and in the modern world. In more than 500 accessible articles emphasizing cross-cultural exchange, diffusion, and change over time, these scholars demonstrate why the approaches of environmental history are having such wide influence, and how past problems can cast new light on current debates.

The distinguished editors--Shepard Krech III, J.R. McNeill, and Carolyn Merchant--are assisted by an international editorial advisory board of senior scholars, with contributors including Donald Worster, Alfred Crosby, William McNeill, and James Lovelock. Featuring up-to-date coverage of the latest developments in the field, this fascinating new work belongs in any collection serving world history, ecology, environmental studies, geography, or environmental science programs.

Which countries guarantee their citizens equality under the law? Which states may suspend civil liberties in times of crisis? This informative reference work allows easy comparison between the constitutions of the 194 countries of the world. Written by specialists in the respective country, the entries follow a common structure that makes the systems easily comparable. Following a brief preface, the introduction explores the concepts of constitutional law and fundamental rights. In the A-to-Z section, each signed country entry begins with an "At-a-Glance" box that summarizes the governmental system, the legislative system, the date of the original constitution, the date the constitution was last changed, and more. This volume also includes a narrative discussion for each entry that analyzes the constitution's basic principles, including constitutional history, governmental regulation of the economy, and the rights and duties of citizenship. Other features include suggestions for further reading, including sources for the text of the constitution in English and in the original language; appendixes that cover the constitution of the European Union and provide an overview of special and disputed territories; a glossary; and a comprehensive index. Its coverage for each country includes: amendments to the constitution; basic organizational structure; citizenship; constitutional bodies; c Read more...

Encyclopedia of Medical Genomics and Proteomics (2 Volumes set)

Although it is likely to be a number of years before many of the expected benefits of the genomics revolution are realized, the impact of these scientific breakthroughs on medicine is likely to become apparent quickly and will transform the entire scene within a generation. Recent advances in genomic and proteomic technologies open up new avenues in the diagnoses and management of human diseases, and the application of these techniques may initiate a paradigm shift in clinical medicine. Initially, polymerase chain reaction tests were performed only in highly specialized or research laboratories. Presently, routine molecular assays are widely performed in virtually all sections and specialties of the traditional clinical laboratory, including oncology, hematology, immunology, and blood transfusion. Evolving techniques of nucleic acid and protein microarrays may follow a similar path to the clinician in the hospital. In human genetics, molecular techniques have brought forth new procedures for increasingly specific, sensitive, fast, simple, reliable, automatable, and cost-effective diagnostic and predictive DNA analysis. All of these modern nucleic acid technologies have significantly simplified the routine assessment of patients in the genetics clinic. For instance, advances in molecular biology and in genomics have made possible the ea Read more...

We reviewed volumes 8 to 11 (Birds) in the January 1 and 15, 2003, issue, and volumes 4 and 5 (Fishes), volume 6 (Amphibians), and volume 7 (Reptiles) in the December 1, 2003, issue. Volume 17 is a comprehensive index.
H. C. Bernhard Grzimek hoped his original encyclopedia would "disseminate knowledge of the animals and love for them." This is also a goal of the revised edition; it does not disappoint. All volumes follow a similar organization. Introductory chapters, written in a narrative style, are usually followed by taxonomic chapters and species accounts, which follow a prescribed format. There are no page references from the main account of the species to the illustrations; the index at the end of each volume must be consulted. Color photographs, illustrations, and distribution maps supplement the text. Additional resources include references to books, periodical articles, organizations, and Web sites. Read more...

In that pre-AIDS era of medicine, infectiology was the emblem of triumphant medicine, with the icon names of Jenner, Pasteur, Koch, and Flemming, among others. The student who chose to specialize in this field appeared to be opting for the easy road to fame and fortune. This is no longer true and in the past has been so only for the industrial world. The peril of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases (ERID) was clearly identified by the US health and political authorities more than 10 years ago. This was before the mad cow disease, foot-and-mouth disease, SARS, and avian flu affairs. Read more...

Photo--Encyclopedic Approach: Each entry combines a precise description with an annotated photograph to highlight the bird's chief characteristics and distinguishing features. There are useful maps showing worldwide distribution, pictures of alternative plumage, and scale drawings of each bird. Color--coded, quick--reference bands giving at--a--glance facts complete every entry.Identification Made easy: For beginners and established enthusiasts alike, the Smithsonian Handbook of Birds of the World begins by describing anatomy and behavior to help identify different types of bird. K. Hall/Macmillan Library Reference between 1991 and 1996. The volume includes three kinds of entries. One kind is an important culture that was not included, for one reason or another, in the original encyclopedia. These new cultures are located in most regions of the world, but especially in Africa and North America. For example, Rwandans and Barundi are now included. New or updated articles on cultures that have been strongly affected by recent political events are a second kind of entry here. For example, the wars in the former Yugoslavia required expansions and updates of the articles on the Bosnian Muslims, Albanians, and Serbs, and the Afghanistan war called for revisions of the articles on the Tajiks and Uzbeks. Finally, there originally were only short entries on some important cultures, including some that are of classic interest in anthropology (for example, Crow, Zulu). These have now been expanded and updated. Read more...

The author has an extensive and admirable background in the field of monohull sail boats and shares his love for the hobby in this fine compilation exhibiting hundreds of sailboat specs and drawings. Many sailors have strong opinions about boats they've owned and loved but Henkel gives us the basic facts and leaves the fluff to the manufacturers brag sheets. Well presented and good for many hours of armchair sailboat research. Your eyes will be opened to many fine small boats you didn't know existed.
As an avid former catamaran sailor myself, beachcat sailors must know that a "cruising boat" and small catamarans are two completely different beasts. The title of this fine work says it all so don't expect what it doesn't promote. Fair winds.

This is a very complete account of Greek myth. With close to 800 pages fully indexed it is easy to locate the stories of the individual gods or heroes you might be searching for. The text has some decent quality black and white images, but they are not the reason to buy this book. It's all about the stories. I've been teaching myth on the college level for 10 years now and have not found a nicer or more complete text accounting of Greek myths. This book also includes lots of genealogical charts so that you can trace the family histories of gods and human heroes.
This might not be a text for the casual reader of myth or for the lover of myth for two reasons: first the stories are mostly detailed summaries taken from the various sources. Reading the account of Agamemnon in this text is NOT the same as reading Aeschylus. The fluid and often beautiful words of Aeschylus are NOT here; a high quality summary of the original stories is presented. Secondly, this text includes variant myths. That is to say that often myths come in multiple versions, not all of which agree on the details. In order to place all of the mainstream myths and all of the variants into a single text the editors have chosen to place the variants into a smaller typeface, which is fine with me. This method immediately alerts the reader that he/she is getting into the side channels of mythic developments and one might want to skip over such materials because this is a very large text.

The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits

Ghosts and spirits 3 Entries on people, terms, and phenomena relating to ghosts and spirits are arranged alphabetically with see references and are indexed in the back. From apparitions to La Llorona, phantom nuns, and the Winchester Mystery House, Guiley seems to give an even-handed treatment to these phenomena, indicating where something is "according to legend" or "disputed," but otherwise describing events as they were reported.
Four hundred entries arranged A-to-Z flesh out our beliefs about all that haunts. Illustrations.
This encyclopedia is about as fair as one can expect about a subject that many people think doesn't exist. The author ( Harper's Encyclopedia of Mystical and Paranormal Experience , LJ 8/91) has tried to read much of the skeptical literature and at least to report what it says. Yes, the believers get much more coverage, but there is an attempt to present both sides. The accuracy of the book is also fairly high. A number of errors do occur, which, surprisingly, seem not to have been copied from other sources but to have resulted from misremembering. These small errors do not significantly affect the utility of the book. A useful addition to the reference collection of any academic or public library. Read more...

The conflict between good and evil can be found in every culture, mythical tradition, and religion throughout history. In many cases, the source of evil has been personified as demons or devils, and in many belief systems, both are considered to be real entities operating outside the boundaries of the physical world to torment people or lead them astray. In some traditions demons are believed to be the direct opposite of angels, working against the forces of good and challenging them. Real or not, demons are at the heart of many fascinating beliefs and traditions, several of which are widely held today.

Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life, 5 Volumes

Each volume begins with an introduction to the region that traces cultural development from prehistory to the present; within volumes, entries are organized alphabetically by culture group. Each of the more than 500 two- to six-page entries cover such areas as language, folklore, religion, food (often with recipes), rites of passage, family life, recreation, and social problems. Most articles are written and signed by subject specialists from around the world. However, some are not signed at all, and many are written by unaffiliated writer researchers. Still, the writing is crisp and up-to-date, and the authors offer valuable insights and appear to have spent much time in their respective culture areas. Bibliographies are included along with black-and-white maps of each culture area and, although not richly illustrated, entries do include some black-and-white photos. Read more...
