Fundamentals of Fluid Power Control

This exciting new reference text is concerned with fluid power control. It is an ideal reference for the practicing engineer and a textbook for advanced courses in fluid power control. In applications in which large forces and/or torques are required, often with a fast response time, oil-hydraulic control systems are essential. They excel in environmentally difficult applications because the drive part can be designed with no electrical components and they almost always have a more competitive power/weight ratio compared to electrically actuated systems. Fluid power systems have the capability to control several parameters, such as pressure, speed, position, and so on, to a high degree of accuracy at high power levels. In practice there are many exciting challenges facing the fluid power engineer, who now must preferably have a broad skill set. Read more...

From its genesis as an algorithm modeling methodology with 'no links to implementation', ESL is evolving into a set of complementary methodologies that enable embedded system design, verification and debug through to the hardware and software implementation of custom SoC, system-on-FPGA, system-on-board, and entire multi-board systems.

This book arises from experience the authors have gained from years of work as industry practitioners in the Electronic System Level design area; they have seen "SLD" or "ESL" go through many stages and false starts, and have observed that the shift in design methodologies to ESL is finally occurring. This is partly because of ESL technologies themselves are stabilizing on a useful set of languages being standardized (SystemC is the most notable), and use models are being identified that are beginning to get real adoption. Read more...

Beginning with a discussion of the fundamentals of generic motor design, it logically progresses to a set of more advanced, yet easily understandable, concepts for designing brushless permanent-magnet motors. In addition, the author fully explains techniques for magnetic modeling and circuit analysis, shows how magnetic circuit analysis applies to motor design, describes all major aspects of motor operation and design in simple mathematical terms, develops rigourous design equations for radial flux and axial flux motors, and illustrates basic motor drive schemes. All common motor design terms are clearly defined and a wealth of charts, tables and equations are included.

Summary: This book's strength is its simplicity
Rating: 5

This book presents an excellent overview of interior-rotor brushless motor design. I tend to prefer textbooks that aim to build intuition over cookbook-style handbooks or excessively-mathematical formulations. Math is a language to express physical reality, some books act like math itself constitutes that reality.

Hence, this book's strength is its simplicity. Starting from the basics - short and open magnetic circuits with a single permanent magnet, then on to the simple case of a single wire moving through a field - Read more...

Thoroughly updated and revised, this edition features changes that are evident from the condensed table of contents, and a great deal more that are included in the actual chapters. All the revisions, organization, and topical coverage reflect changes in technology-CMOS technology in particular-by far the most significant development in the world of mainstream electrical engineering. Highlights of the Fifth Edition BLEvenly balanced, streamlined organizational structure: -In each chapter, the "must-cover" topics are placed first and the more specialized material appears last. -The first five chapters, Part I, are organized to form a coherent single-semester introductory course in electronics. Similarly, the next five chapters, Part II, present a body of material suitable for a second one-semester course. The final four chapters, Part III, contain significant topics that can be used as enhancements or substitutes for some of the material in earlier chapters, as well as resources for project or thesis work. BLBoth the MOSFET and BJT chapters have been rewritten and updated, and remain independent of each other. The MOSFET coverage is placed first, but the two devices can be covered in any desired order. BLMany more MOS circuit examples, which use numbers that reflect current technology, are provided throughout.

The push to move products to market as quickly and cheaply as possible is fiercer than ever, and accordingly, engineers are always looking for new ways to provide their companies with the edge over the competition. Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), which are faster, denser, and more cost-effective than traditional programmable logic devices (PLDs), are quickly becoming one of the most widespread tools that embedded engineers can utilize in order to gain that needed edge. FPGAs are especially popular for prototyping designs, due to their superior speed and efficiency.

This book hones in on that rapid prototyping aspect of FPGA use, showing designers exactly how they can cut time off production cycles and save their companies money drained by costly mistakes, via prototyping designs with FPGAs first. Reading it will take a designer with a basic knowledge of implementing FPGAs to the "next-level" of FPGA use because unlike broad beginner books on FPGAs, this book presents the required design skills in a focused, practical, example-oriented manner.

*In-the-trenches expert authors assure the most applicable advice to practicing engineers

*Dual focus on successfully making critical decisions and avoiding common pitfalls appeals to engineers pressured for speed and perfection

It has almost all of his inventions and ideas in it, but there is very little explanation and detail describing them. This can be good when trying to get a good overview of what Tesla accomplished, however if you are trying to get detailed and informative information about these I recommend going and getting a better source after this book because it is nothing more than a good introduction to the nature of his inventions and patents. If you have any background in the field of electricity than these sketches and brief overviews will be no problem to you and you will understand them, but if you have no background than understanding the nature of these will be quite difficult. Nonetheless, this book was still really fun to read and study, the relaxed nature of it allows it to be a fun book to read and learn from without reminding you that it is still a book. Overall, I would say this is a good book to have, especially for the price, the overview it provides is incomparable and it serves as a great introduction to Tesla's life. Read more...

Software engineering
The new Airbus A380 uses a substantial amount of software to create a "paperless"
cockpit. Software engineering successfully maps and plans the millions of lines of code
comprising the plane's software
Software engineering is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable
approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software, and the study of
these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software.
The term software engineering first appeared in the 1968 NATO Software Engineering
Conference and was meant to provoke thought regarding the current "software crisis" at
the time. Since then, it has continued as a profession and field of study dedicated to
creating software that is of higher quality, more affordable, maintainable, and quicker to
build. Since the field is still relatively young compared to its sister fields of engineering,
there is still much debate around what software engineering actually is, and if it conforms
to the classical definition of engineering. It has grown organically out of the limitations
of viewing software as just programming. "Software development" is a much used term
in industry which is more generic and does not necessarily subsume the engineering
paradigm. Although it is questionable what impact it has had on actual software
development over the last more than 40 years, the field's future looks bright according to

Every element of the technology is examined in detail, beginning at the component level and proceeding through a thorough exposition of the design and performance of these systems.
The book is organized in a logical fashion, starting with an overview of the technology and a survey of the range of applications. A background chapter then explains the central concepts of active magnetic bearings while avoiding a morass of technical details. From here, the reader continues to a meticulous, state-of-the-art exposition of the component technologies and the manner in which they are assembled to form the AMB/rotor system. These system models and performance objectives are then tied together through extensive discussions of control methods for both rigid and flexible rotors, including consideration of the problem of system dynamics identification. Supporting this, the issues of system reliability and fault management are discussed from several useful and complementary perspectives. At the end of the book, numerous special concepts and systems, including micro-scale bearings, self-bearing motors, and self-sensing bearings, are put forth as promising directions for new research and development. Read more...

Starting with two MOSFETs and resistors, he tried to figure out how many circuits he could generate. As a transistor usually acts as a voltage controlled current source, while resistors can also be modeled in that way, Eric decided to use voltage controlled current sources as building blocks and find two-port circuits with a non-zero transfer function. Using brains, graph theory, and a MAPLE computer program, he found them all: 145 circuit-graphs with two voltage controlled current sources. As each graph has several different transistor implementations, hundreds of transistor-resistor circuits are possible. Read more...

LeadingEdge Electric Power Research

The world is becoming increasingly electrified. For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management.

A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load center, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of e Read more...

Two distinguishing features of the book are: (i) A strong emphasis on the engineering aspects of software development with the total exclusion of the topics on software project management, and (ii) An elaborate coverage of the requirement analysis. The former has enabled the author to focus on the engineering aspects of the subject, and the latter makes an improvement over the deficiencies of other books on the subject, which often make passing reference to this very important phase of software development. Another highlight of the book is the reference to a large number of original sources from which much of the contents has been drawn.

The book is organized in 24 chapters, with two chapters devoted to the Basics, eight chapters to Requirements, six chapters to Design, two chapters to Detailed Design and Coding, five chapters to Testing, and one chapter to Beyond Development of Software.

Copper Interconnect Technology

Since overall circuit performance has depended primarily on transistor properties, previous efforts to enhance circuit and system speed were focused on transistors as well. During the last decade, however, the parasitic resistance, capacitance, and inductance associated with interconnections began to influence circuit performance and will be the primary factors in the evolution of nanoscale ULSI technology. Because metallic conductivity and resistance to electromigration of bulk copper (Cu) are better than aluminum, use of copper and low-k materials is now prevalent in the international microelectronics industry. As the feature size of the Cu-lines forming interconnects is scaled, resistivity of the lines increases. At the same time electromigration and stress-induced voids due to increased current density become significant reliability issues. Although copper/low-k technology has become fairly mature, there is no single book available on the promise and challenges of these next-generation technologies. In this book, a leader in the field describes advanced laser systems with lower radiation wavelengths, photolithography materials, and mathematical modeling approaches to address the challenges of Cu-interconnect technology. Read more...

Summary: A Gem, with caveats
Rating: 4

This is an excellent, if dense read that bridges the gap between the science of electricity, and the practical matter of an Electrician's work. It will not fully explain the science of the topic, and it will certainly not teach you how to wire a house. It is a very good book if your question runs along the lines of "Why does it work that way?" Its treatment of Ohm's law and other fundamentals is particularly useful. That said, the index is a nightmare, the book is not organized by page number, and it contains some apocrypha.

Read more...

Lead-Free Soldering

The past few years have seen major developments in soldering materials and processes for electronics assembly manufacture due to the movement from tin-lead to lead-free soldering. The removal of lead from electronics solders due to environmental considerations first developed with proposed US legislation in the early 1990s. At that time, the alternatives had not been fully explored, so a ban on the use of lead in electronic solders was put on hold. However the seed was sown for development with various projects initiated during the 1990s in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Based on government pressures, Japan OEMs began to move to lead-free solder products from 1998 and this, combined with the European Union ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) legislation enacted in 2006, drove the global manufacture of electronics consumer products with leadfree solders. From 1998 to the present, the development of lead-free solder materials and processes has progressed to such an extent that development work moving forward will typically only concentrate on lead-free solders and components rather than tin-lead solders and components. Read more...

The layout and content of these is designed to make them easy to use, and to contain the most valuable but tough to calculate information.

Daniel McBrearty compiled this book as a result of bitter experience as an analog designer, initially prototyping and testing the ideas of other folk, and seeking to make those little changes that can make the difference between a good and really excellent circuit, and later doing the whole thing himself. If you don't know off the top of your head the best pair of E24 resistors to make an inverting op-amp stage of 18dB gain (and who does?) then this book will save you hours and protect your sanity in a world in which your calculator always goes missing, and you've forgotten the formula.

Technology for Modelling: Electrical Analogies, Engineering Practice, and the Development of Analogue Computing

Historians have different views on the core identity of analogue computing. Some portray the technology solely as a precursor to digital computing, whereas others stress that analogue applications existed well after 1940. Even within contemporary sources, there is a spectrum of understanding around what constitutes analogue computing. To understand the relationship between analogue and digital computing, and what this means for users today, the history must consider how the technology is used. Technology for Modelling investigates the technologies, the concepts, and the applications of analogue computing. The text asserts that analogue computing must be thought of as not just a computing technology, but also as a modelling technology, demonstrating how the history of analogue computing can be understood in terms of the parallel themes of calculation and modelling. The book also includes a number of detailed case studies of the technology's use and application. Topics and features: discusses the meaning of analogue computing and its significance in history, and describes the main differences between analogue and digital computing; provides a chronology of analogue computing, based upon the two major strands of calculation and modeling; examines the wider relationship between computing and modelling, and discusses how the theme of modelling fits within the history of analogue computing; describes how the history of analogue computing evolved through a number of stages of use; p Read more...

Since then the devices and equipme nt
available to amateurs interested in the microwave bands has continued to increase . This book
contains some of the things that are being used right now and some the surplus equipment that
has come onto the market that can be modified for use on the microwave bands.
The articles on surplus equipme nt have been taken from Scatterpoint , the magazine of the UK
Microwave Group , this is a very active group an I recommend that any amateurs in the UK
should get along to one of the meeting that are held around the country to see how useful being
part of this group can be to get the most out of the microwave bands. There are similar groups
in many other countries that I an sure would be just as helpful if you do not live in the UK.
So that readers will not think this is just a face-l ifted version of the earlier Microwave Projects
books it has been decided to give this book a new more descriptive title.
Many of the articles require a PCB, the artwork in this book is not reproduced to exact size, so
if you are going to make you own PCBs please take care to scale the artwork correctly. I
recommend that you take an easier option because most of the authors can supply PCBs and I
have included contact details where possible. Many of the contacts are email addresses or web
sites, unfortunately these have a habit of changing, they were current at the time of editing

The Radio Amateur's Microwave Communications Handbook

repeater system sits in a heated and dimly illuminated building.
The large dish antennas outside the building give only a brief
glimpse of the futuristic activity happening inside. The system is
handling various communications, ranging from computer interlinks
and amateur-television operations to multiple voice relays between
various cities. An additional dish antenna is relaying signals to wide-
band amateur communications satellites placed in geostationary or-
bits at various points around the world. Many miles away, the
amateurs accessing this system use small hand-held transceivers,
or computer terminals; yet their operations can reach the world.
Fantasyland? Indeed not ; this is the shape of amateur trends that
are being developed and activated at this time. Operational con-
cepts of these systems are outlined in this book. I sincerely hope
you find this information both beneficial and inspiring. Once in-
volved in microwave pioneering, you'll surely agree this is ama-
teur radio's ultimate frontier. As I' ve said many times-in previous
books and in magazine columns-the Golden Age of Radio is very
much alive and well. It lives in the highly specialized areas of mod-
ern communications technology. Read more...

ask if I could produce a book of weekend projects for the microwave enthusiast. I explained that
most microwave projects were much more that just weekend projects , so the title microwave
cookbook was discussed but it was thought that there may well have been many disappoihted
purchasers of such a title! Finally the title of Microwave Projects was chosen.
The microwave amateur radio bands still attract keen constructors who experiment with
different designs and technologies to achieve that moment of joy when a rare contact or contact
on a new band is made. The content of this book has been chosen to wet the appeti te of these
amateurs with designs from all around the world using everything from tried and tested designs,
through modification of second hand equipment, to new designs using state of the art
components.
\
I have tried to organise the various articles in a logical sequence. This starts with generating
your signal with a transceiver or a synthesised transmitter, followed with a number of transverter
designs. Having produced rf on the required band there are some useful amplifier designs. Of
course you wi ll need some test equipment to help persuade your new equipment to work , if like
me you do not have rf "green fingers ". In true amateur style if all else fails you will need to resort
to the theory of how your equipment should be working , so there is a chapt Read more...

Radar Transmitters

The material for this book was developed from presentations that
were given at short courses on principles of radar, from internal notes
and memoranda generated within the Experiment Station at Georgia
Tech, and from the notes of a short course on the subject presented
during- July 1979. This earlier material has been substantially extended
and augmented in order to provide a reasonably detailed and compre-
hcusive coverage of high-power microwave radar transmitters.
The motivation for collecting this material was the observation over
a number of years that knowledge of radar transmitter design techniques
ha,s not been widely disseminated, and that the lack of such knowledge
coni inur-s to impact a number of radar research, development, and pro-
dUel jon pl'OgTams. It has been my observation that design information
101 radar transmitters and components is not readily available from one
source. but is widely scattered in a number of isolated locations, some
of' which arc difficult to access even with the services of a large technical
library. Therefore, the objective of this work is not to present a vast
body of new knowledg-e or new and innovative techniques, but to collect
[rom a numlx-r or diverse sources the basic design information for a
radar unusmiu r-r and its components and to present such information
in bniform manner. Read more...

W1Fb's Design Notebook

Do you like to build Amateur Radio equipment? Would you like to? If your
answer to either of these questions is yes, then this book is for you.
We are pleased to present the fourth volume in the Doug DeMaw notebook
series. Two of the other volumes in this series deal with antennas. The third
is QRP Notebook, and this notebook is related in that it has more of the
simple equipment that can be found in the earl ier work. In these pages you
will find basic radio projects for the bands below 30 MHz. You will also find
explanations of how various circuits work. One thing you will not find is
heavy mathematical analysis.
This plain-language book is filled with simple , practical projects that can be
built using common hand tools. You'll not need exotic or hard-to-find
components to build the projects. Nor will you need elaborate test equipmen t
to make them work .
Sound good? We think so too. Please use the feedback form at the back to
let us know what you think of this book, and what you'd like to see in future
League publications. Read more...

Rating: 5

This QRP Book by Doug Demaw is a very practical and thorough explanation about Basic and Radio Frequency Electronics for everyone. Doug Demaw has left a Legacy of excellent books for Radio Amateurs and Electronic experimeters. You can learn about Electronics, Build and Test Circuits. Get a Ham license, Learn how from ARRL. I have been a licensed Ham for 62 years. Come join the fun. Steve, KI6CP

Summary: W1FB'S QRP Notebook by Doug DeMaw
Rating: 5

This is still an enjoyable and interesting resource book for the builder and experimenter. Full of interesting circuits and ideas.

Although, I would not consider this book indispensible for the QRP building enthusiast( I'd reserve that for- The Electronic Data Book for Homebrewers and QRPers by NA5N. Try KANGA US ); I would nonetheless recomend it.

Price is right, very readable, does generate interest in building- has a place in my liabrary.

Summary: Good Practical book
Rating: 4

An excellent practical book on designing simple low power ham transmitters and receivers. A little short in design theory but a good book nonetheless. Read Chris Bowick's RF Circuit Design book for more theoretical info. If you want to build simple radios and want them to work, this is the book for you. Read more...

Spread Spectrum Sourcebook

It is safe to say that amateur spread spectrum exists because of one unique entity-the
Amateur Radio Research and Development Corporation. Based in the Washington,
DC area, AMRAD played a key role in the development of amateur packet radio in
the early 1980s, and is continuing to lead the way in the realm of amateur spread
spectrum. Its members are dedicated to furthering the Amateur Radio art, and their
accomplishments speak for themselves.
It is altogether fitting, therefore, that this book be edited by long-time AMRAD
President Andre Kesteloot, N4ICK. He has done as much as anyone to spread the
word about the intriguing intricacies-and very real benefits-that spread spectrum
systems hold for the amateur service.
The League is proud to be associated with AMRAD's efforts to bring practical spread-
spectrum systems to the amateur bands. This book brings together articles, papers and
documents that provide an overview of how amateur spread spectrum evolved from a
short notice in the AMRAD Newsletter. This newsletter provided the bulk of the early
material on spread spectrum, but it wasn't long before QST and its then-new
experimenter's newsletter, QEX, took up the cause. Nearly all the spread spectrum
articles published in those three sources are reprinted in this book, as are the
regulatory documents that made spread spectrum legal on the amateur bands. Toward
the end of the book, two ground-breaking technical papers are published in their
entirety. Overall Read more...
