Linear CMOS RF Power Amplifiers for Wireless Applications: Efficiency Enhancement and Frequency-Tunable Capability

The RF power amplifier is a key component in a wireless transceiver and is considered by many as the design bottleneck in the transmitting chain. Linear CMOS RF Power Amplifiers for Wireless Applications addresses two fundamental aspects in RF power amplifier design for integration in CMOS technologies at 2.4, 3.7 and 5.2 GHz: efficiency enhancement and frequency agility.
The well-known linearity–efficiency trade-off is circumvented by employing an efficiency-enhancement technique called the dynamic supply RF power amplifier. The design of this system is described with great detail and compared with other efficiency enhancement techniques.
The frequency agility is achieved with a novel impedance matching network based on coupled inductors. The design of a dual-band RF power amplifier is shown, with a careful analysis of the tunable matching network and its interaction with the rest of the circuit.
The considerations and conclusions drawn throughout this book are based on simulation as well as measurement results from the integrated circuit prototypes carefully built and respecting best practices in RF design. Read more...

Conceptual Wavelets in Digital Signal Processing

HOW (AND WHY) THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT

Wavelets are incredibly powerful, but if you can t understand them, you can t use them or worse, blissfully misuse them!

CONCEPTUAL WAVELETS is unique as a complete, in-depth treatment of the subject but from an intuitive, conceptual point of view. In this book we stress informed use of wavelets and leave the mathematically rigorous proofs to other texts. We do look at some key equations (at a high-school algebra level)--but only after the concepts are demonstrated so you can see the wavelets (and their associated equations) in action.

FEATURES

--More than 400 illustrations, figures, graphics, tables, visual comparisons, etc. are provided to simplify and clarify the concepts. All of these visual aids are explained in detail using familiar language and terminology.

--Specific properties and suggested applications of the various wavelets and wavelet transforms are clearly shown using step-by-step walk-throughs, demonstrations, case studies, examples, and short tutorials.

--Numerous Jargon Alerts and other Plain English explanations bring you up to speed with the current wavelet nomenclature.

--References to some of the best traditional (and non-traditional) texts, papers, and websites are given for further application-specific study. We also familiarize you with wavelet software and show you how to read the results of their various displays.

--Both the strengths and the weaknesses of the various wavelet tr Read more...

Fourier series and Fourier transform are applied to signals to set the ground work for the modulation techniques introduced in later chapters. Various baseband signals, including duo-binary baseband signaling, are generated and the spectra are examined to detail the unsuitability of these signals for accessing the public switched network. Pulse code modulation and time-division multiplexing circuits are examined and simulated where sampling and quantization noise topics are discussed. We construct a single-channel PCM system from transmission to receiver i.e. end-to-end, and import real speech signals to examine the problems associated with aliasing, sample and hold. Companding is addressed here and we look at the A and mu law characteristics for achieving better signal to quantization noise ratios. Several types of delta modulators are examined and also the concept of time divisionmultiplexing is considered. Multi-level signaling techniques such as QPSK andQAMare analyzed and simulated and home-made meters, such as scatter and eye meters, are used to assess the performance of these modulation systems in the presence of noise. The raised-cosine family of filters for shaping data before transmission is examined in depth where bandwidth efficiency and channel capacity is dis Read more...

Principles of Random Signal Analysis and Low Noise Design

This book gives a systematic account of the Power Spectral Density and details the application of this theory to Communications and Electronics. The level of the book is suited to final year Electrical and Electronic Engineering students, post-graduate students and researchers. This book arises from the author’s research experience in low noise amplifier design and analysis of random processes. The basis of the book is the definition of the power spectral density using results directly from Fourier theory rather than the more popular approach of defining the power spectral density in terms of the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function. The difference between use of the two definitions, which are equivalent with an appropriate definition for the autocorrelation function, is that the former greatly facilitates analysis, that is, the determination of the power spectral density of standard signals, as the book demonstrates. The strength, and uniqueness, of the book is that, based on a thorough account of signal theory, it presents a comprehensive and straightforward account of the power spectral density and its application to the important areas of communications and electronics. Read more...

DSP is utilized in just about every electronic system or device. DSP is taking one piece of information be it data, image, video, or audio, most likely compressing, sending, and filtering it to another location within your application to appear in the form of a document, picture or video.

Like Smith before it, this book is different to most on the market by following a popular applied approach to this tricky subject, and will be the perfect starting point for engineers who need to get into DSP from the ground floor. This book starts with the absolute basics of this integral process.

No experience is expected and with no prior knowledge taken for granted, a refresher chapter on complex numbers and trigonometry can be found at the very beginning of the material. Real-world worked examples, reference designs, and tools - including online applets that enable readers to visualize key principles - complete a package that will help engineers who that needs to learn anew or refresh their memory on this essential technology as they move to projects that require DSP familiarity.

•Dismayed when presented with a mass of equations as an explanation of DSP? This is the book for you!

Clear examples and a non-mathematical approach gets you up to speed with DSP

Includes an overview of the DSP functions and implementation used in typical DSP-intensive applications, including error correction, CDMA mobile communication, and radar systems Read more...

In several countries in Europe and overseas, broadcasting organisations, network providers and receiver manufacturers are already implementing digital broadcasting services using the DAB system. DAB is very different from conventional analogue broadcasting systems. Most of the system components such as perceptual audio coding (MPEG-1/2), OFDM channel coding and modulation, the provision of a multiplex of several services and data transmission protocols (MOT), are new concepts typical of digital broadcasting. Even experts in analogue transmission systems will feel less familiar with these new elements of broadcasting technology. Therefore, the aim of this book is to inform the expert reader about the basic concepts of the DAB system. Read more...

Substrate noise coupling in mixed-signal ASICs

This book is the first in a series of three dedicated to advanced topics in Mixed-Signal IC design methodologies. It is one of the results achieved by the Mixed-Signal Design Cluster, an initiative launched in 1998 as part of the TARDIS project, funded by the European Commission within the ESPRIT-IV Framework. This initiative aims to promote the development of new design and test methodologies for Mixed-Signal ICs, and to accelerate their adoption by industrial users. As Microelectronics evolves, Mixed-Signal techniques are gaining a significant importance due to the wide spread of applications where an analog front-end is needed to drive a complex digital-processing subsystem. In this sense, Analog and Mixed-Signal circuits are recognized as a bottleneck for the market acceptance of Systems-On-Chip, because of the inherent difficulties involved in the design and test of these circuits. Specially, problems arising from the use of a common substrate for analog and digital components are a main limiting factor. Read more...

Introduction to Digital Audio Coding and Standards

However, interest in digital speech only gathered momentum sO,me telecommunications industry started a global project to digitize the telephone network. The technology trade-off of the time in this infrastructure-driven project led to a preference for adding transmission capacity over finding methods to reduce the bitrate of the speech signal so the use of compression technology for speech remained largely dormant. When in the late 1980s the ITU-T standard for visual telephony became available enabling compression of video by a factor of 3,000, the only audio format in use to accompany this highly compressed video was standard telephone quality 64 kb/s PCM. It was only where transmission capacity was a scarce asset, like in the access portion of radiotelephony, that speech compression became a useful tool. Read more...

Numerous examples are presented in detail showing the many ways in which Kalman filters can be designed. Computer code written in FORTRAN, MATLAB®, and True BASIC accompanies all of the examples so that the interested reader can verify concepts and explore issues beyond the scope of the text. Sometimes mistakes are introduced intentionally to the initial filter designs in order to show the reader what happens when the filter is not working properly. The text spends a great deal of time setting up a problem before the Kalman filter is actually formulated in order to give the reader an intuitive feel for the problem being addressed. Real problems are seldom presented in the form of differential equations and they usually don’t have unique solutions. Therefore, the authors illustrate several different filtering approaches for tackling a problem. Readers will gain experience in software and performance tradeoffs for determining the best filtering approach for the application at hand. Read more...

Modern wavelet theory defines outlines for construction of wavelets and transformations using them. It gives rules that one has to obey to get a wavelet basis with desired properties, meaning that everyone can create a wavelet adequate for the given task. This book helps to understanding this rules.

In seven chapters, the book gives a concise understanding of the theory of wavelets, explains how to compute them in practise and finally presents typical applications of wavelets and how they work. The book is written for graduate students and practising Engineers of electrical communications, signal processing and control. Read more...

Multi-Carrier and Spread Spectrum Systems

Frequency spectrum is a limited and valuable resource for wireless communications. A good example can be observed among network operators in Europe for the prices to pay for UMTS-frequency bands. Therefore, the first goal when designing future wireless communication systems (e.g. 4G - fourth generation) has to be the increase in spectral efficiency. The development in digital communications in the past years has enabled efficient modulation and coding techniques for robust and spectral efficient data, speech, audio and video transmission. These are the multi-carrier modulation (e.g. OFDM) and the spread spectrum technique (e.g. DS-CDMA), where OFDM was chosen for broadcast applications (DVB, DAB) as well as for broadband wireless indoor standards (ETSI HIPERLAN-II, IEEE-802.11) and the DS-CDMA was selected in mobile communications (IS-95, third generation mobile radio systems world wide, UMTS/IMT 2000). Since 1993 various combinations of multi-carrier (MC) modulation and the spread spectrum (SS) technique have been introduced and the field of MC-SS communications has become an independent and important research topic with increasing activities. New application fields have been proposed such as high rate cellular mobile, high rate wireless indoor and LMDS. It has been shown that MC-SS offers the high spectral efficiency, robustness and flexibility that is required for the next generation systems. Meanwhile, different alternative hybrid schemes such as OFDM/OFDMA, MC-TDMA, etc. Read more...

Algebraically Approximate and Noisy Realization of Discrete-Time Systems and Digital Images

It also deal with approximation and noise cancellation of two dimensional arrays. It will be of special interest to researchers, engineers and graduate students who have specialized in filtering theory and system theory and digital images. This monograph is composed of two parts. Part I and Part II will deal with approximation and noise cancellation of dynamical systems or digital images respectively. From noiseless or noisy data, reduction will be made. A method which reduces model information or noise was proposed in the reference vol. 376 in LNCIS [Hasegawa, 2008]. Using this method will allow model description to be treated as noise reduction or model reduction without having to bother, for example, with solving many partial differential equations. This monograph will propose a new and easy method which produces the same results as the method treated in the reference. As proof of its advantageous effect, this monograph provides a new law in the sense of numerical experiments. The new and easy method is executed using the algebraic calculations without solving partial differential equations. For our purpose, many actual examples of model information and noise reduction will also be provided. Read more...

This book presents in three parts methods for analyzing and processing and reconstructing complex signals.

The first part of this book is dedicated to the problem of measurements of the basic electric quantities in electric utilities, both from the aspect of accuracy of this type of measurements and the possibilities of simple and practical realization. The second part presents a reconstruction of trigonometric polynomials, a specific class of band-limited signals, from a number of integrated values of input signals. The third part deals with the problem of estimating the value of the active power of the ac signal in the presence of subharmonics and interharmonics. The analysis makes use of the most general model of the voltage and current signal, i.e. the most complex spectral content that can be expected to appear in practice Read more...

This book is intended to present fuzzy logic systems and useful applications with a self-
contained, simple, readable approach. It is intended for the intelligent reader with an alert
mind. The approach, the organization, and the presentation of this book are also hoped to
enhance the accessibility to existing knowledge beyond its contents. The book is divided
into twelve chapters. In Chapter 1 Gaussian membership functions (MFs) are proposed as an
alternative to the traditional triangular MFs in order to improve the reliability and
robustness of the system. Gaussian MFs provide smooth transition between levels and
provides a way to fire the maximum number of rules in the rule base and hence a more
accurate representation of the input-output relationship is achieved. Chapter 2 describes
robust H? control problems for uncertain Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with
immeasurable premise variables. A continuous-time Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy system is first
considered. The same control problems for discrete-time counterpart are also considered.
Chapter 3 deals with the control of T-S fuzzy systems using fuzzy weighting-dependent
lyapunov function. In Chapter 4, the digital fuzzy control system considering a time delay is
developed and its stability analysis and design method are proposed. The discrete Takagi-
Sugeno(TS) fuzzy model and parallel distributed compensation(PDC) conception for the
controller are used. The proposed control Read more...

An algorithm, which is based on the optical flow constraint equation, is described in detail. This algorithm fits with the motion processing model, hardware and software constraints and resolves depth-velocity ambiguity, which is critical for autonomous navigation. There is also extensive coverage on the use of this algorithm in digital hardware and describes both the initial motion processing model, the chosen hardware platforms, and the global function of the system.

As a result, the microphone signal has to be cleaned up with digitalsignal processing tools before it is stored, analyzed, transmitted, or played out. This cleaning process is often called noise reduction and this topic has attracted a considerable amount of research and engineering attention for several decades. One of the objectives of this book is to present in a common framework an overview of the state of the art ofnoise reduction algorithms in the single-channel (one microphone) case. The focus is on the most useful approaches, i.e., filtering techniques (in different domains) and spectral enhancement methods. The other objective ofNoise Reduction in Speech Processing is to derive all these well-known techniques in a rigorous way and prove many fundamental and intuitive results often taken for granted. This book is especially written for graduate students and research engineers who work onnoise reduction for speech and audio applications and want to understand the subtle mechanisms behind each approach. Many new and interesting concepts are presented in this text that we hope the readers will find useful and i Read more...

But what makes this book unique is providing profound knowledge about 2-D signal processing. Most of image processing books just contain fancy images and quick-n-dirty equations for hit-n-run people. But this book provides various algorithms, design methods, and illustrations in terms of both of "2-D signal" and "image" processing. Chapters for filter design are good examples. Unlike most image processing books, it gives comparative illustrations and reference regarding many combinations of FIR, IIR, separable, non-separable, and zero-phase filtering as well as their basic implementation methods. This book is NOT for undergrads or DSP begineers. For those who need more theoritcal backgrounds in 2-D signal and image processing to solve given problems, I surely believe this book quenches the quriosities. Read more...

Multirate Statistical Signal Processing

The ability to process signals at multiple sampling rates can help reduce costs and improve performance in many DSP applications ranging from signal compression to wireless communications, consumer entertainment products and sensor networks. The theory of multirate signal processing has witnessed a great deal of progress since the publication of the first textbook by Ronald E. Crochiere and Lawrence R. Rabiner in 1983. However, this progress has been mainly in the area of deterministic systems with emphasis on perfect-reconstruction filter banks, orthogonal filter banks, systems with the same sampling rate across all channels and tree-structured systems.

Multirate Statistical Signal Processing introduces a statistical theory for extracting information from several related signals that have different sampling rates. This new theory generalizes the conventional (deterministic) theory of multirate systems beyond many of its constraints. Furthermore, it allows for the formulation and solution of several new problems such as spectrum estimation, time-delay estimation and sensor fusion in the realm of multirate signal processing.

The author presents background material, key principles, potential applications and leading-edge research while striking the appropriate balance between clarity and brevity. The book is self-contained and provides a valuable resource for signal processing researchers, graduate students and practicing engineers.

Bayesian Signal Processing: Classical, Modern and Particle Filtering Methods

New Bayesian approach helps you solve tough problems in signal processing with ease

Signal processing is based on this fundamental concept—the extraction of critical information from noisy, uncertain data. Most techniques rely on underlying Gaussian assumptions for a solution, but what happens when these assumptions are erroneous? Bayesian techniques circumvent this limitation by offering a completely different approach that can easily incorporate non-Gaussian and nonlinear processes along with all of the usual methods currently available.

This text enables readers to fully exploit the many advantages of the "Bayesian approach" to model-based signal processing. It clearly demonstrates the features of this powerful approach compared to the pure statistical methods found in other texts. Readers will discover how easily and effectively the Bayesian approach, coupled with the hierarchy of physics-based models developed throughout, can be applied to signal processing problems that previously seemed unsolvable.

Bayesian Signal Processing features the latest generation of processors (particle filters) that have been enabled by the advent of high-speed/high-throughput computers. The Bayesian approach is uniformly developed in this book's algorithms, examples, applications, and case studies. Throughout this book, the emphasis is on nonlinear/non-Gaussian problems; however, some classical techniques (e.g. Kalman filters, unscented Kalman filters, Gaussian sums, grid-based filt Read more...

An entire chapter is devoted to the design of time-continuous filters which provides a useful preliminary step for analog-to-digital filter conversion.
Attention is also given to the main methods of designing finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. Bi-dimensional digital filtering (image filtering) is investigated and a study on stability analysis, a very useful tool when implementing IIR filters, is also carried out. As such, it will provide a practical and useful guide to those engaged in signal processing. Read more...

So the efficient implementation of these algorithms is critical and is the main goal of this book. It starts with an overview of today's FPGA technology, devices, and tools for designing state-of-the-art DSP systems. A case study in the first chapter is the basis for more than 40 design examples throughout. The following chapters deal with computer arithmetic concepts, theory and the implementation of FIR and IIR filters, multirate digital signal processing systems, DFT and FFT algorithms, advanced algorithms with high future potential, and adaptive filters. Each chapter contains exercises. The VERILOG source code and a glossary are given in the appendices, while the accompanying CD-ROM contains the examples in VHDL and Verilog code as well as the newest Altera "Quartus II web edition" software. This edition has a new chapter on microprocessors, new sections on special functions using MAC calls, intellectual property core design and arbitrary sampling rate converters, and over 100 new exercises. Read more...

In academia, DSP is generally regarded as one of the more mathematical topics in the electrical engineering curriculum, and based on our experiences of teaching we have reduces the mathematical content to what we consider useful, essential, and interesting; we have also emphasized points of difficulty. Our experiences indicate that students learn best if they are aware of the practical relevance of a subject, and while more theoretical texts are essential for completeness and reference as the student matures in the subject, we believe in producing graduates equipped also with practical knowledge and skills. This book was written with these considerations in mind.

The book is not a comprehensive text on DSP, but it covers most aspects of the subject found in undergraduate electrical, electronic or communication engineering degree courses. A number of DSP techniques which are of particular relevance to industry are also covered and in a few years, we believe, these will find their way into undergraduate curricula. These include techniques such as adaptive filtering and multirate processing.

The emphasis throughout the book is on the practical aspects of DSP. C language programs are provided to enable readers to explore the concepts presented in the book, to design and analyse their own DSP systems, and to gain a deeper understanding of DSP.

Commercial DSP software is available and plays a key role in the design and analysis of DSP systems. Howev Read more...

Divided into three parts, the book covers various aspects of the digital signal processing (DSP) "problem". It begins with the analysis of discrete-time signals and explains sampling and the use of the discrete and fast Fourier transforms. The second part of the book—covering digital to analog and analog to digital conversion—provides a practical interlude in the mathematical content before Part III lays out a careful development of the Z-transform and the design and analysis of digital filters.

"The novelty of this book lies in providing the student the subsequent transforms in DSP in a concise manner, in an experimental way by a large use of MATLAB and SIMULINK. … The book is accessible to students familiar with the main facts from a Signals-and-Systems course." Signal processing is primarily aimed at extracting useful information, while rejecting the extraneous from noisy data. If signal levels are high, then basic techniques can be applied. However, low signal levels require using the underlying physics to correct the problem causing these low levels and extracting the desired information. Model-based signal processing incorporates the physical phenomena, measurements, and noise in the form of mathematical models to solve this problem. Not only does the approach enable signal processors to work directly in terms of the problem's physics, instrumentation, and uncertainties, but it provides far superior performance over the standard techniques. Model-based signal processing is both a modeler's as well as a signal processor's tool.

Model-Based Signal Processing develops the model-based approach in a unified manner and follows it through the text in the algorithms, examples, applications, and case studies. The approach, coupled with the hierarchy of physics-based models that the author develops, including linear as well as nonlinear representations, makes it a unique contribution to the field of signal processing.

The text includes parametric (e.g., autoregressive or all-pole), sinusoidal, wave-based, and state-space models as some of the model sets with its focus on how they may be used to solve signal processing problems.
Applications of Digital Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics

To date, most research in DSP applied to sound has been concentrated on speech, which is bandwidth limited to about 4 kilohertz. Speech processing is also limited by the low fidelity typically expected in the telephone network. Today, the main applications of audio DSP are high quality audio coding and the digital generation and manipulation of music signals. They share common research topics including perceptual measurement techniques and analysis/synthesis methods. Additional important topics are hearing aids using signal processing technology and hardware architectures for digital signal processing of audio. In all these areas the last decade has seen a significant amount of application-oriented research. The frequency range of wideband audio has an upper limit of 20 kilohertz and the resulting difference in frequency range and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) due to sample size must be taken into account when designing DSP algorithms. There are whole classes of algorithms that the speech community is not interested in pursuing or using. These algorithms and techniques are revealed in this book. This book is suitable for advanced level courses and serves as a valuable reference for researchers in the field. Interested and informed engineers will also find the book useful in their work. Read more...

Soon after the first attempts at Delft University of Technology to apply the
radar interferometric technique for the monitoring of subsidence due to gas
extraction in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands, it was recognized by
Usai and Hanssen (1997) that man-made features remained coherent in radar
interferograms over long time spans, while their surrounding was completely
decorrelated. This particular area in the northern part of the Netherlands is
well-known for its subsidence. Due to the slow subsidence rate—the maximum
is approximately 1 cm/y—long temporal baselines needed to be used. Even
though only interferograms with short perpendicular baselines were generated,
temporal decorrelation severely limited the analysis, see (Usai, 1997, 2000;
Usai and Klees, 1999). The Groningen data set was also used by Hanssen
(1998), who analyzed artifacts of atmospheric origin in coherent interferograms
with short temporal baselines. Aside from temporal and geometrical
decorrelation, atmospheric signal is the main problem for the interpretation
of interferometric signal of current day spaceborne sensors on board, e.g.,
ERS, ENVISAT and RADARSAT (Hanssen, 2001). Read more...

Analysis And Control Of Nonlinear Systems With Stationary Sets: Time-Domain and Frequency-Domain Methods

Nonlinear systems with stationary sets are important because they cover a lot of practical systems in engineering. Previous analysis has been based on the frequency-domain for this class of systems. However, few results on robustness analysis and controller design for these systems are easily available.

This book presents the analysis as well as methods based on the global properties of systems with stationary sets in a unified time-domain and frequency-domain framework. The focus is on multi-input and multi-output systems, compared to previous publications which considered only single-input and single-output systems. The control methods presented in this book will be valuable for research on nonlinear systems with stationary sets.

Contents: Linear Systems and Linear Matrix Inequalities; LMI Approach to H Control; Analysis and Control of Positive Real Systems; Absolute Stability and Dichotomy of Lur e Systems; Pendulum-Like Feedback Systems; Controller Design for a Class of Pendulum-Like Systems; Controller Designs for Systems with Input Nonlinearities; Analysis and Control for Uncertain Feedback Nonlinear Systems; Control of Periodic Oscillations in Nonlinear Systems; Interconnected Systems; Chua s Circuits. Read more...

Applications in Time-Frequency Signal Processing

Because most real-world signals, including speech, sonar, communication, and biological signals, are non-stationary, traditional signal analysis tools such as Fourier transforms are of limited use because they do not provide easily accessible information about the localization of a given frequency component. A more suitable approach for those studying non-stationary signals is the use of time frequency representations that are functions of both time and frequency. Applications in Time-Frequency Signal Processing investigates the use of various time-frequency representations, such as the Wigner distribution and the spectrogram, in diverse application areas. Other books tend to focus on theoretical development. This book differs by highlighting particular applications of time-frequency representations and demonstrating how to use them. It also provides pseudo-code of the computational algorithms for these representations so that you can apply them to your own specific problems. Written by leaders in the field, this book offers the opportunity to learn from experts. Time-Frequency Representation (TFR) algorithms are simplified, enabling you to understand the complex theories behind TFRs and easily implement them. The numerous examples and figures, review of concepts, and extensive references allow for easy learning and application of the various time-frequency representations. Read more...

Product Description:

Digital signal processing plays a central role in the development of modern communication and information processing systems. The theory and application of signal processing is concerned with the identification, modelling and utilisation of patterns and structures in a signal process. The observation signals are often distorted, incomplete and noisy and therefore noise reduction, the removal of channel distortion, and replacement of lost samples are important parts of a signal processing system.

The fourth edition of Advanced Digital Signal Processing and Noise Reduction updates and extends the chapters in the previous edition and includes two new chapters on MIMO systems, Correlation and Eigen analysis and independent component analysis. The wide range of topics covered in this book include Wiener filters, echo cancellation, channel equalisation, spectral estimation, detection and removal of impulsive and transient noise, interpolation of missing data segments, speech enhancement and noise/interference in mobile communication environments. This book provides a coherent and structured presentation of the theory and applications of statistical signal processing and noise reduction me Read more...

Complying actively with the requirement by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) on integrating computer tools, it illustrates the usage of MATLAB and Simulink for signal and system analysis and design.

The ideas are developed gradually with continual reference to the practical situations where they would be applicable. Many worked examples have been included in order to help develop the idea and to illustrate the material as it is presented. Throughout the book continuous-time and discrete-time signals/systems have been developed in parallel to save the time/space for explaining the two similar ones as far as there is no concern over confusion.

This innovative new text brings together two leading experts, one from signal processing and the other from power quality. Combining their fields of expertise, they set forth and investigate various types of power quality disturbances, how measurements of these disturbances are processed and interpreted, and, finally, the use and interpretation of power quality standards documents.

As a practical aid to readers, the authors make a clear distinction between two types of power quality disturbances:
* Variations: disturbances that are continuously present
* Events: disturbances that occur occasionally

A complete analysis and full set of tools are provided for each type of disturbance:
* Detailed examination of the origin of the disturbance
* Signal processing measurement techniques, including advanced techniques and those techniques set forth in standards documents
* Interpretation and analysis of measurement data
* Methods for further processing the features extracted from the signal processing into site and system indices

The depth of coverage is outstanding: the authors present and analyze material that is not covered in the standards nor found in the scientific literature.

This text is intended for two groups of readers: students and researchers in power engineering who need to use signal processing techniques for power system applications, and students and researchers in signal processing wh Read more...

A Digital Signal Processing Primer: With Applications to Digital Audio and Computer Music

This is a different kind of digital signal processing textbook in just about every way. To begin with, chapter one starts out talking about sinusoids in the context of tuning forks, when just about every other DSP book under the sun starts with a review of linear systems. This is good, in that throughout the book your eye is kept on the ball of actual audio applications. This can be somewhat troublesome in that the author sometimes has to delve into mathematics that the typical DSP student may not be ready for - the wave equation and elementary partial differential equations for example. The author ultimately does get the job done, however, explaining the DFT, FFT, z-transform, and filter design all within the context of audio signals. It is true that only the last chapter is explicitly labeled “Audio and Musical Applications”. However, this only means that the author is discussing complex applications in this chapter only, after the groundwork has been laid for all of the theory. I would especially recommend this book to people interested in computer music that need to get up to speed on DSP. Such students may also appreciate “DSP Filter Cookbook” by John Lane. It is all about the implementation of audio filters and contains C++ source code and schematics. If you are a traditional student of DSP and digital audio does not interest you, you might want to go a more traditional route starting out with “Understanding Digital Signal Processing” by Lyon and proceeding on to a more Read more...

Advanced Signal Integrity for High-Speed Digital Designs

Now, from the foremost experts in the field, this book leverages theory and techniques from non-related fields such as applied physics, communications, and microwave engineering and applies them to the field of high-speed digital design. This approach creates an optimal combination of theory and practice that is meaningful to practicing engineers and graduate students alike.

Review:
Heck and Hall have done a fantastic job in summarizing both the theory and practice of solving today's SI issues. The math behind topics such as linear network theory, frequency-dependent dielectric effects and filter design for equalization is rigorous, yet ample space is set aside for practical guidance as well. Of particular note is their thorough treatment of hot PCB SI topics as dielectric loss and surface roughness modeling, and preservation of causality in transmission line models. Transmitter and receiver equalization (DFE and CTLE) are well-described, as are analysis techniques such as peak distortion and bit-error rate. Finally, their summary of response surface modeling (RSM) approaches to desgn of experiments (DOE) is perhaps the first and certainly the most comprehensive overview of those methods as applied to PCB SI design available today. A book well worth purchasing if you are involved in SI modeling, SI simulation or PCB design. Read more...

It is expected that the next generation of human-to-vehicle interfaces will incorporate speech, video/image, and wireless communication modalities to provide more comfortable and safer driving ambiance. It is also expected that vehicles will become "smarter" and provide a level of wireless information sharing of resources regarding road, weather, traffic, and other information that drivers may need immediately or request at a later time while driving on the road. The format of this work centers on three themes: in-vehicle corpora, speech recognition/dialog systems with emphasis on car environments, and digital signal processing for mobile platforms involving noise suppression, image/video processing, and alternative communication scenarios that can be employed for in-vehicle applications. DSP for In-Vehicle and Mobile Systems is appropriate for researchers and professionals working in signal processing technologies, next generation vehicle design and networked-communications. Read more...

About the Book
The concept of neural network originated from neuroscience, and one of its primitive aims is to help us understand the principle of the central nerve system and related behaviors through mathematical modeling. The first part of the book is a collection of three contributions dedicated to this aim. The second part of the book consists of seven chapters, all of which are about system identification and control. The third part of the book is composed of Chapter 11 and Chapter 12, where two interesting RNNs are discussed, respectively. The fourth part of the book comprises four chapters focusing on optimization problems. Doing optimization in a way like the central nerve systems of advanced animals including humans is promising from some viewpoints.

While electrical and computer engineering students need a solid background in both areas, coverage of that scope does justice to neither. Discrete linear systems is a broad area, and those studying the subject need and deserve a dedicated treatment.Discrete Systems and Digital Signal Processing with MATLAB presents all of the material needed to build a strong foundation and at the same time master the use of MATLAB for problem solving. This treatment is detailed and firmly rooted in basic mathematical principles. It covers all of the traditional topics but features several chapters that make the book unique:

* Two stand-alone chapters on transformations and continuous filter design presented before a thorough treatment of IIR and FIR digital filter design. Together these four chapters form a complete presentation of digital filter design found in no other text

* A chapter on state-space discrete systems and another summarizing all representations used in describing discrete linear systems

* A very comprehensive chapter on the DFT and FFT that covers a wide range of FFT applicationsEach chapter contains a multitude of examples that illustrate each concept as it is presented and includes end-of-chapter sections of examples and exercises that demonstrate the theory. Each chapter also contains a section of "insights" that helps students gain a deeper understanding of key terms and conn Read more...
