Product Description

Now beer fans everywhere can have their favorite brew and eat it too! Dating back thousands of

years to ancient Babylonia, beer is the most famous and beloved thirst quencher the world has

ever known. The Bible praises it, Egyptians were buried with it, our Founding Fathers depended

on it, medical journals prescribe it, and Noah and the Mayflower set sail with it. Whether

kegged, bottled, canned, free-flowing, or whipped into Golden Cheesecake, beer is all about

friendship, laughter, and celebrating life to its fullest.

More than ten years in the making, The Ultimate Beer Lover's Cookbook is an unprecedented

collection of more than 400 food and drink recipes containing beer as a main ingredient. From

scrambled eggs made with beer at breakfast and a cheese steak sandwich with onion rings or a

beer burger and Chocolate Beershake for lunch, to a surf 'n' turf beer-infused combo of lobster

and steak for dinner (and a midnight snack of chocolate-dipped strawberries), beer lovers can

feast on brewskis at any time of the day. Every genre of food is included: appetizers, breads,

soups and chili, salads, fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, sauces, marinades, beef, poultry,

Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods & Recipes of the World Vol 1 - 4

This approach to world cultures through food could have been a major breakthrough for its intended middle-school audience. It has many of the right ingredients, especially its established Junior Worldmark format, where alphabetized country entries are divided into standard subsections covering geography; history; foods (including those of different culture groups); religious and holiday celebrations; mealtime customs; politics, economics, and nutrition; and both print and Web-based resources for further study. The 70 articles cover nations and culture groups worldwide and offer more than 700 recipes for both traditional and modern dishes. Introductory material addresses basic safety and health issues, defines cooking terminology and procedures, and lists ingredients, with suggestions on how to locate more exotic goods. Unfortunately, the set has several drawbacks. The most noticeable is the lack of color photographs or graphic enhancement. Murky black-and-white pictures accompany the recipes, creating tableaus that are particularly unappetizing. The photos are so grainy that even shots meant to instruct or demonstrate are useless. The recipes themselves are serviceable but unexciting. Read more...

Food Marketing to Children and Youth: Threat or Opportunity?

Focusing on this question, this book is of interest to parents, federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, health care professionals, industry companies, industry trade groups, and media. Creating an environment in which children in the United States grow up healthy should be a high priority for the nation. Yet the prevailing pattern of food and beverage marketing to children in America represents, at best, a missed opportunity, and at worst, a direct threat to the health prospects of the next generation. Children's dietary and related health patterns are shaped by the interplay of many factors-their biologic affinities, their culture and values, their economic status, their physical and social environments, and their commercial media environments-all of which, apart from their genetic predispositions, have undergone significant transformations during the past three decades. Among these environments, none have more rapidly assumed central socializing roles among children and youth than the media. With the growth in the variety and the penetration of the media have come a parallel growth with their use for marketing, including the marketing of food and beverage products. What impact has food and beverage marketing had on the dietary patterns and health status of American children? The answer to this question has the potential to shape a generation Read more...

Jewish Eating and Identity Through the Ages

This book explores the history of Jewish eating and Jewish identity, from the Bible to the present. The lessons of this book rest squarely on the much-quoted insight: 'you are what you eat.' But this book goes beyond that simple truism to recognise that you are not only what you eat, but also how, when, where and with whom you eat. This book begins at the beginning – with the Torah – and then follows the history of Jewish eating until the modern age and even into our own day. Along the way, it travels from Jewish homes in the Holy Land and Babylonia (Iraq) to France and Spain and Italy, then to Germany and Poland and finally to the United States of America. It looks at significant developments in Jewish eating in all ages: in the ancient Near East and Persia, in the Classical age, throughout the Middle Ages and into Modernity. It pays careful attention to Jewish eating laws (halakha) in each time and place, but it does not stop there: it also looks for Jews who bend and break the law, who eat like Romans or Christians regardless of the law and who develop their own hybrid customs according to their own 'laws', whatever Jewish tradition might tell them. In this colourful history of Jewish eating, we get more than a taste of how expressive and crucial eating choices have always been. Read more...

Encyclopedia of Pasta (California Studies in Food and Culture)

Spaghetti, gnocchi, tagliatellea, ravioli, vincisgrassi, strascinatipasta in its myriad forms has been a staple of the Mediterranean diet longer than bread. This beautiful volume is the first book to provide a complete history of pasta in Italy, telling its long story via the extravagant variety of shapes it takes and the even greater abundance of names by which it is known. Food scholar Oretta Zanini De Vita traveled to every corner of her native Italy, recording oral histories, delving into long-forgotten family cookbooks, and searching obscure archives to produce this rich and uniquely personal compendium of historical and geographical information. For each entry she includes the primary ingredients, preparation techniques, variant names, and the locality where it is made and eaten. Along the way, Zanini De Vita debunks such culinary myths as Marco Polo's supposed role in pasta's story even as she serves up a feast of new information. Encyclopedia of Pasta, illustrated throughout with original drawings by Luciana Marini, will be the standard reference on one of the world's favorite foods for many years to come, engaging and delighting both general readers and food professionals.

The problem with GI is it is an incomplete equation when it comes to figuring out what impact a particular food will have on the body. A better tool is to determine the glycemic load of what you eat and that's something Dr. Rob Thompson has devoted himself to with his diet plan. In this book of recipes that serves as a companion to The Glycemic-Load Diet, Dr. Thompson teams up with world-famous low-carb cookbook author Dana Carpender to whip up some yummy recipes that are designed to control insulin spikes which lead to weight gain, hunger, and disease. The reviewer before based her review on the peek inside amazon provides, and unfortunately has based her review on a misconception. Gelles does provide a complete nutritional breakdown for each recipe, but oddly, it's in the back of the book starting on page 362. I don't know why the nutritional information wasn't put on each page with the recipe, one of my Mayo clinic cookbooks does this also, which I find inconvenient and thus my four stars.
It would be much easier to pick up the book, see a recipe, and have the nutritional information on the same page, rather than having to look it up in back. That being said, the recipes are good. I especially like the great shakes section, where she gives several spice mixes that are easy to mix and then shake on chicken or meat for different flavors. The recipes are well laid out, easy to read, the ingredients basic and easy to find in any grocery store.

“ Ching-He Huang is one of the brightest stars in modern Chinese cooking in the UK. Each week in her new BBC2 series she re-invents the nation's favourite Chinese dishes, modernising them with fresh, easy to buy ingredients, and offering simple practical tips and techniques. These are brought together in this beautiful book to accompany the series. Drawing on the experiences of top chefs, her family and friends, growers and producers and celebrity enthusiasts Ching sets out to discover the best Chinese cooking in the UK today, introducing easy-to-make Chinese food to sometimes resistant Brits, and painting a picture of modern Anglo-Chinese life in the UK as she goes. Chinese Food Made Easy begins with some of the most familiar dishes from a Chinese takeaway menu - Sweet and Sour Prawns, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Chop Suey and Cantonese Vegetable Stir Fry, each with Ching's special and imaginative twist. Later we explore spicy Szechuan food: Noodles, Dumplings and Dim sum; Seafood; Fast Food; Desserts and finally Celebratory Food, where Ching presents a complete banquet of dishes to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Ching's knowledge, charm and enthusiasm shine through as she shares the 'basic principles' of Chinese cooking including some of the simple techniques and tips taught by her Grandparents for tasty results. So, in summertime, and with Shakespeare’s blessing, “How shall we beguile/The lazy time if not with some delight?” Read more...

Great Old Fashioned American Desserts

"Great Old Fashioned American Desserts" offers a diversity of desserts that span the various periods and regions of American cooking. Some dishes are accompanied by chatty notes, explaining, for example, that waffles were introduced by the Dutch in the 1800s. But these are mere embellishments, and the business side of this book is the generous assortment of enticing, lucid recipes meant to be used by modern-day bakers. Creole sweet-potato and old Arkansas vinegar pies are examples of "America's favorite dessert." The chocolate Kentucky bourbon-pecan cake and "Lazy-Daisy" cake (first baked, then topped with a brown sugar-and-butter topping) are among the more unusual cake contributions.
Pastry and dough-based items include cream puffs and New Orleans beignets, while cooked fruit comes to the fore in baked pears with mint cream, plum duff and fresh berry tumble. Puddings and ice creams round out a collection that will nudge dessert lovers into the kitchen to recapture old favorites and discover new ones.

The recipes are simple, easy to follow and very tasty. You will never think about vegetables the same way again!
Even more importantly, the last section features a breakdown of the research that has been done linking diet to disease, and helps to demystify the relationships. They also list recommended websites and resources for additional nutritional information.
I particularly enjoy that they are not trying to sell anything, or convince us to "diet". They are simply providing a new way to think about what's for dinner, and some great solutions for healthy living.

Creme Brulee: The Bonjour Way

So... when I happened upon this book, I just had to buy it. The pictures alone with get your mouth watering (and each recipe has it's own picture), but it's actually the taste of these recipes that will keep you coming back to this book.
The recipes are well written, easy to follow, and the ingredient list will not scare you off. In fact, you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry and refrigerator already.
I really like the fact that instructions are given on how to torch the sugar. I know now how far to hold the torch away from the top of the creme as well as how to evenly 'burn' the sugar across the dessert. So with the guidance of this book, my creme brulees look as good as any I order in a restuarant.
So far, I have made the classic creme brulee, the double chocolate, and the pumpkin. Each tasted as luscious as their respective picture.

China has a wealth of traditional foods such as Chinese steamed bread, Chinese noodles, Chinese rice noodles, Starch noodles (Vermicelli), Tofu, Sofu (soybean cheese), douchi (fermentation soybean), Chinese vinegar and many other foods. These traditional foods are an important component of Chinese people's diet and the basis for their food habits and nutrition. They also constitute an essential aspect of their cultural heritage and related closely to the Chinese people's historical background and to the environment in which they live. During the last few decades, the development of international food trade and the extensive urbanisation process which have affected life-styles to a large extent in many parts of the world have resulted in a sizeable decrease in the consumption of some kinds of traditional foods and a relative neglect in the cultivation of traditional food crops. Some traditional foods had withered away or are withering away. In recent years, as a result of food globalisation, the consumption of traditional foods has increased considerably and many of these foods are concurrent with easy-to-prepare, processed, semi-processed and high-tech foods. It was decided therefore that a book should be carried out to document existing Chinese traditional foods in China and to assess thei Read more...

Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. In this groundbreaking book, award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong. Read more...

A Book of Mediterranean Food

A collection of recipes the author made while living in the Mediterranean area, doing her own cooking and obtaining her information first hand. The majority of dishes do not require exotic ingredients, being made with everyday vegetables, herbs, fish and poultry but treated in unfamiliar ways.

Long acknowledged as the inspiration for such modern masters as Julia Child and Claudia Roden, A Book of Mediterranean Food is Elizabeth David's passionate mixture of recipes, culinary lore, and frank talk. In bleak postwar Great Britain, when basics were rationed and fresh food a fantasy, David set about to cheer herself --and her audience-- up with dishes from the south of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and the Middle East. Some are sumptuous, many are simple, most are sublime. Read more...

Read more...

Vegan geniesen! Vollwertige Rezepte aus nah und fern, 6. Auflage

Read more...

Contributors include food specialists, anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, economists, and critics who provided 600 signed articles covering topics such as individual staple foods; the role of food in different holidays and festivals; nutrition and food science; food symbolism and its use in various arts; national cuisines; and biographies of individuals in food history. ... The set features 550 black-and-white photographs and illustrations, with separate eight-page inserts of color illustrations in each volume. ... Public libraries especially will find Encyclopedia of Food and Culture valuable since it does cover a broader ranger of culinary subjects and its alphabetical arrangement of entries is easier to use than the chapter structure ... Translated from the German writings of Julius Hensel, the book was designed to introduce the people of the U.S. to the idea that plants require healthy food in order to flourish, just as a human being does. It describes a then new and rational system for fertilization which has become science today — fetilizing with stone dust. Hensel went searching for food for plants and found it in the primeval rocks. Fed on such foods, plants will yield healthy, wholesome and life sustaining food that escapes disease and parasites. Read more...

When I'm Bored, I Make Soup

Soup is surely the ultimate food. From the poorest of the poor standing in the street beside a soup kitchen to the richest of the rich at a posh dinner party, we can all eat soup. Be it a hot Mediterranean summers day or a cold wet Scottish autumn one there is a soup that is just right. It will match your mood – from comforting and warm to spicy and exotic, full of unknown promise like a first date. Feeling alone and miserable? Just cuddle up to a bowl of soup by the fire, watch the telly and stuff the world out there. Or have friends round for lunch and put a panfull of soup on the table surrounded by bread, cheese and beer and let everybody help themselves. In a hurry? Make it instantly from a packet all glutinous and full of strange plasticky vegetables. Or take your time, like I will today and make a big pan full of velvety pumpkin soup for the family tonight. It will bubble away quietly while I get on with other things and if anybody is late, no worries, it only gets better whilst sitting keeping warm. Read more...

The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite

Most of us know what it feels like to fall under the spell of food when one slice of pizza turns into half a pie, or a handful of chips leads to an empty bag. But it s harder to understand why we can't seem to stop eating even when we know better. When we want so badly to say "no," why do we continue to reach for food?

Dr. David Kessler, the dynamic former FDA commissioner who reinvented the food label and tackled the tobacco industry, now reveals how the food industry has hijacked the brains of millions of Americans. The result? America s number-one public health issue. Dr. Kessler cracks the code of overeating by explaining how our bodies and minds are changed when we consume foods that contain sugar, fat, and salt. Food manufacturers create products by manipulating these ingredients to stimulate our appetites, setting in motion a cycle of desire and consumption that ends with a nation of overeaters. The End of Overeating explains for the first time why it is exceptionally difficult to resist certain foods and why it s so easy to overindulge.

Dr. Kessler met with top scientists, physicians, and food industry insiders. The End of Overeating uncovers the shocking facts about how we lost control over our eating habits and how we can get it back. Dr. Kessler presents groundbreaking research, along with what is sure to be a controversial view inside the industry that continues to feed a nation of overeaters from popular brand manufacturers to advertisers, chain restau Read more...

Renaissance Food from Rabelais to Shakespeare

Providing a unique perspective on a fascinating aspect of early modern culture, this volume focuses on the role of food and diet as represented in the works of a range of European authors, including Shakespeare, from the late medieval period to the mid seventeenth century. The volume is divided into several sections, the first of which is 'Eating in Early Modern Europe'; contributors consider cultural formations and cultural contexts for early modern attitudes to food and diet, moving from the more general consideration of European and English manners to the particular consideration of historical attitudes toward specific foodstuffs. The second section is 'Early Modern Cookbooks and Recipes', which takes readers into the kitchen and considers the development of the cultural artifact we now recognize as the cookbook, how early modern recipes might 'work' today, and whether cookery books specifically aimed at women might have shaped domestic creativity. Part Three, 'Food and Feeding in Early Modern Literature' offers analysis of the engagement with food and feeding in key literary European and English texts from the early sixteenth to the early seventeenth century: Francois Rabelais' "Quart livre", Shakespeare's plays, and seventeenth-century dramatic prologues. The essays included in this collection are international and interdisciplinary in their approach; they incorporate the perspectives of historians, cultural commentators, and literary critics who are leaders in the field Read more...

I don't think this one is near as good as her other cookbooks. There are alot of recipes provided by friends and peers, and a few repeats from previous cookbooks. And seems like several are more exotic than her normal downhome type of things. I always liked Paula's older recipes cause chances are you already had most of the ingredients already in the pantry. I know it would be hard for her to keep coming up with original recipes given her schedule, but I'd give my eye teeth for another book of solely Paula and her family's recipes of good old southern cooking.
If you watch Paula on tv and are looking for a good sampling of her work, pick up The Lady and Sons Savannah Country Cookbook
or Just Desserts and you'll turn to it time and time again. For true die-hard fans who already own the other three, you'll enjoy the intros and witty comments made by Paula throughout the book.
