Making Competitive Cities

The book investigates the impact on the competitiveness of cities developing creative industries (arts, media, entertainment, creative business services, architects, publishers, designers) and knowledge-intensive industries (ICT, R and D, finance, law). It provides significant new knowledge to the theoretical and practical understanding of the conditions necessary to stimulate "creative knowledge" cities.

The editors compare the socio-economic developments, experiences and strategies in 13 urban regions across Europe: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Birmingham, Budapest, Dublin, Helsinki, Leipzig, Milan, Munich, Poznan, Riga, Sofia and Toulouse. These have different histories and roles; include capital and non-capital cities of different sizes; represent cities with different economic structures; and different cultural, political and welfare state traditions.

Through this wide set of examples, Making Competitive Cities informs the debate about creative and knowledge-intensive industries, economic development, and competitiveness policies. It focuses on which metropolitan regions have a better chance to develop as "creative knowledge regions" and which do not, as well as investigating why this is so and what can policy do to influence change.

Chapter authors from thirteen European institutions rigorously evaluate, reformulate and empirically test assumptions about cities and their potential for attracting creative and knowledge-intensive industries. As well as a systematic empirica Read more...

According to an August 2009 report from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the United States market for functional foods in 2007 was US$ 27 billion. Forecasts of growth range from between 8.5% and 20% per year, or about four times that of the food industry in general. Global demand by 2013 is expected to be about $100 billion. With this demand for new products comes a demand for product development and supporting literature for that purpose. There is a wealth of research and development in this area and great scope for commercialization, and this book provides a much-needed review of important opportunities for new products, written by authors with in-depth knowledge of as yet unfulfilled health-related needs.

The book addresses functional food product development from a number of perspectives: the process itself; health research that may provide opportunities; idea creation; regulation; and processes and ingredients. It also features case studies that illustrate real product development and commercialization histories. Written for food scientists and technologists, the book presents practical information for use in functional food product development. It is intended for use by practitioners in functional food companies and food technology centres and will also be of interest to researchers and students of food science.

The Lit Interior

This book is intended as a design guide for those individuals in the fields of electrical engineering, architecture, and interior design who will one day design lighting systems for others to build.
The book is organized so that an individual with little or no training in lighting design will become familiar with the basic principles and psychology behind good lighting before design procedures are addressed. Discussions on the process of vision and the properties of light set the stage for exploring the various tools at the designer's disposal for creating and manipulating light to provide a desired effect in an architectural space.
The reader is then led through the conceptual design process, which entails the use of manufacturer's offerings, codes and guidelines for space lighting, as well as calculation methods to predict the performance of a design. The conceptual design is rounded out by exploring methods for powering and controlling a lighting system.
A realistic design problem is begun early in the journey, and is completed, bit-by-bit, as each new concept is explored and applied to the design. Documentation of the design is the final stage of the process, which culminates in a finished set of plans and detailed specifications for the project. A final segment of the book, called ‘The Second Time Around', is devoted to retrofitting existing inefficient lighting systems with new, energy-efficient components to improve light quality and reduce the energy consumption of Read more...

Civil ENGINEERING DESIGN and CONSTRUCT - a guide to integrating design into the construction process

This publication is a guide to best practice in managing the project process in civil engineering design and construct (D and C) projects. It discusses the issues to be addressed when managing design and explains the attitudes and practices that are recommended to enable projects to succeed. It is intended to increase awareness and understanding of the issues involved, identifying what decisions need to be made, when and why. Differences between D and C and traditional procurement routes are highlighted along with contractual issues. 'Design and construct' is taken to be a generic term encompassing the whole family of design, construct, finance, own, operate and transfer procurement strategies, in which one party is responsible for both designing and constructing a facility. This includes projects procured under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). Considerable emphasis is placed on imparting awareness of the importance of the designer-constructor interface as, in a D and C project, the most critical lines of communication are at this interface. As well as describing contractual frameworks, this guide also contains management toolboxes for reference. It is a working document that will assist those at a senior level (clients, contractors and consultants alike) who have to make crucial decisions affecting the outcome of a project.
Contents:

Bayesian Methods for Structural Dynamics and Civil Engineering

They are also ideal for civil engineering applications, given the numerous types of modeling and parametric uncertainty in civil engineering problems. For example, earthquake ground motion cannot be predetermined at the structural design stage. Complete wind pressure profiles are difficult to measure under operating conditions. Material properties can be difficult to determine to a very precise level - especially concrete, rock, and soil. For air quality prediction, it is difficult to measure the hourly/daily pollutants generated by cars and factories within the area of concern. It is also difficult to obtain the updated air quality information of the surrounding cities. Furthermore, the meteorological conditions of the day for prediction are also uncertain. These are just some of the civil engineering examples to which Bayesian probabilistic methods are applicable.

* Familiarizes readers with the latest developments in the field
* Includes identification problems for both dynamic and static systems
* Addresses challenging civil engineering problems such as modal/model updating
* Presents methods applicable to mechanical and aerospace engineering
* Gives engineers and engineering students a concrete sense of implementation
* Covers real-world case studies in civil engineering and beyond, such Read more...

An author- itative book which considers all aspects of their design may, therefore, be considered to be overdue. This book has had a long period of gestation. The authors have all been closely involved in the evolution of the definitive documents for the design and application of sandwich panels within Europe and it was in the context of this committee work that the need for a comprehensive book, covering all of the important con- siderations which arise in the design, manufacture and use of sandwich panels, was first seen. Read more...

Efflorescence and the discoloration of concrete

It deals with the broad scope of elemental attack by the vagaries of weather and by salts as they move to the face of a building to result in discoloration and, at times, disruption. Much research has in particular been devoted to the cause and nature of efflorescence, an expressive yet ambiguous word which suggests flowering and fruition but describes an effect that almost vies with vandalism. While elusive, however, it is not an intractable phenomenon and can be cured in more senses than one. Its stalactites or bloom can be alleviated by common sense and scientific forethought, given all the rules of quality control. This largely aesthetic problem is conditioned by factors such as temperature, absorption and lack of imagination, with cement and aggregates of lesser importance. The text covers staining of many kinds, superficial but unsightly, and due to faulty workmanship or detailing. Concrete is too readily assumed to have strength and durability only, with an acceptable countenance underestimated or ignored. This work should help towards an appreciation of its potential in visual as well as structural terms. Read more...

Seismic Design of reinforces concrete structures for controlled inelastic response

For a structure to remain elastic under its design seismic action, typically associated with a 10 per cent exceedance probability in 50 years, it has to be designed for lateral forces with magnitude in the order of 50 per cent or more of its weight. Although technically feasible, designing a structure to respond elastically to its design seismic action is economically prohibitive. It is also completely unnecessary, as the earthquake is a dynamic action, representing for a structure a certain total energy input and a demand to tolerate a certain level of displacement and deformation, but not a demand to withstand specific forces. Therefore, seismic design codes allow the development of significant inelastic response under the design seismic action, provided that the magnitude of inelastic deformations does not endanger the integrity of the individual members and of the structure as a whole. The rapid development which has occurred in seismic codes has left a need to review the theoretical framework underlying the process of modern seismic design of reinforced concrete, if for no other reason than to make it more accessible and to explain its logic to those outside the small circle of experts. This design guide aims to satisfy this need in a pr Read more...

The mechanisms are very complicated, the parameters are many, but the possibilities of developing cost-effective treatment schemes for drinking water and waste water are large. To take advantage of this potential, it is important to know which parameters contribute to the process, which are important, and how they affect the process. Because ozonation is so system dependent, most full-scale applications are first tried out bench-scale. That means designers and manufacturers of treatment systems, researchers, as well as potential industrial operators of ozonation must know not only the fundamentals about the mechanisms of ozonation, but also how to set-up experiments so that the results can be interpreted, extrapolated, and applied. Read more...

Analyzing Uncertainty in Civil Engineering

This volume comprehensively addresses the issue of uncertainty in civil engineering, from design to construction. Current engineering practice often leaves uncertainty issues aside, despite the fact that new scientific tools have been developed in the past decades that allow a rational description of uncertainties of all kinds, from model uncertainty to data uncertainty. It is the aim of this volume to take a critical look at current engineering risk concepts in order to raise awareness of uncertainty in numerical computations, shortcomings of a strictly probabilistic safety concept, geotechnical models of failure and their construction implications, actual construction, and legal responsibility. In addition, a number of the new procedures for modelling uncertainty are explained. The book is a result of a collaborate effort of mathematicians, engineers and construction managers who met regularly in a post-graduate seminar at the University of Innsbruck during the past years. Read more...

Movable bridge engineering

This book is intended to be a description of movable bridges of the United States and a comprehensive source of engineering information for bridges of this type. It discusses selection, design, construction, maintenance, inspection, and evaluation of movable bridges. Movable bridges are basically very large machines, so that although this area does not dominate the book, there is a heavy emphasis on mechanical machinery. Structural and electrical issues are discussed, but because a great deal of information in those areas also pertains to many subjects other than movable bridges, their presentation here is limited. Space limitations prevent the more complete examination of several topics in movable bridge engineering that would be of interest to many readers. Other topics that some would have liked to see discussed have been left out altogether. No attempt has been made to present a “cookbook” method of solving problems, not so much due to space limitations as to the belief by the author that each movable bridge is unique and should be designed, constructed, maintained, inspected, and evaluated on that basis. Anyone with a specific movable bridge problem is invited to ask the author for specific assistance. Contact can be made via the Wiley web site (www.wiley.com/go/movablebridge). Any other comments, particularly updates of movable bridge information such as the listing of movable bridges which can also be found at the Wiley web site, are welcome. Read more...

As with many other engineering discoveries, the principle was already known and utilised in nature. A process that is comparable with water jetting is the "spitting" of some fish species, namely Colisa chuna, Colisa lalia, and Toxotes jacularix. The latter species uses some type of discontinuous water jets for spitting for feeding. The other species show spit behaviour in case of nest building, fry tending, and owing to excitement. Read more...

Construction waterproofing handbook, 2nd edition

The basic waterproofing principles presented in Chapter 1—the 90%/1% principle and the 99% principle—are recognized as the most important guides in designing, constructing, and maintaining a waterproof structure. Evidence found in construction failures and presented in lawsuits related to leakage and damage caused by leakage continually reinforces these two founding principles of waterproofing building science. Waterproofing is finally being defined not as an individual system but as a construction process that involves all the exterior building cladding components—not as the responsibility of one individual subcontractor, the waterproofer, but of the entire construction team, from the designer to the contractor to all subcontractors and material suppliers. This new edition includes a new chapter on residential waterproofing, which emphasizes the necessity of treating a home’s exterior as an integrated system acting to prevent water inflation. As in all other types of construction, successful residential construction also must follow the practices set forth throughout this book. Read more...

For a long time, groundwater protection regimes and associated policies have suffered from a lack of overall planning and speci; c instruments which could ensure concerted actions across the EU. Early groundwater legislation (Directive 80/68/EEC) rather narrowly focused on control of emissions of substances from industrial and urban sources, while provisions for control of diffuse sources came later in the legislative picture with the agriculture- and industrial emissions-related directives, and in particular with the Nitrates (96/676/EC) and IPPC (61/96/EC) Directives. Read more...

Rating: 5

I was required to buy this book for a steel design course, and was annoyed at first with how expensive and bulky this book was, since I assumed we would only be using it for the tables. Once I knew how to use the book, though, I grew quite fond of it. Not only are the tables clearly marked, but the Manual and the commentary in the back were better than our textbook at explaining which equations to use and how to apply them. We now call this book our "Bible" because it has helped and guided us through our steel courses, lol. It was the best money I ever spent on a textbook, and I'm not even considering ever giving the "Bible" up. Read more...

For highly serviced buildings such as sports centres, this figure can easily exceed 75%. Services can also take up 15% of a building's volume. Therefore building services cannot be ignored. Architects have learnt to accept and accommodate the increased need for pipes, ducts and cabling encroaching on to their designs. Some with reluctance, not least Louis Kahn when writing in World Architecture in 1964: 'I do not like ducts. I do not like pipes. I hate them so thoroughly, I feel that they have to be given their place. If I just haled them and took no care, I think they would invade the building and completely destroy it.' Not all architects have chosen to compete with the ducting and mechanical plant. Some have followed the examples of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers by integrating it with the construction and making it a feature of the building, viz. the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Lloyds Building in London. Read more...

Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective.
Project Quality Management - Why, What and How

Winner of the 2006 Cleland Award for Literature from Project Management Institute (PMI).

Quality is a much mentioned but little employed component of project success. There are many quality books, tools, and training courses on the market oriented toward the manufacturing domain, yet they provide little information of relevance to project managers who work with intellectual processes more than the action details of production. So where does a project manager go for guidance on integrating the quality demanded in project implementation? Right here!

Engineering Risk Analysis of Water Pollution: Probabilities and Fuzzy Sets

More specifically the questions of risk and reliability in water quality are analysed, from the engineering point of view and a methodology is developed to evaluate environmental impacts on rivers, groundwater and coastal areas from wastewater disposal. In a biological environment with many risks and unexpected events, an attempt to apply a rigorous analysis to uncertain and complex environmental issues may appear ambitious, if not utopic. In fact, environmental problems related to water resources are complicated, unstable and difficult to understand. What would be, for example, the effect on algal blooms and eutrophication in a coastal area if the pollutant loads from a river doubled? Even more complicated is the quantitative prediction of coastal water quality from a possible climate change (e.g. doubling of the atmospheric C02). Read more...

Perhaps the greatest surprise was how much the world of land development had changed in only 8 years. I ended the Preface of the first edition with the observation that much of the new design paradigm would be written in the next 25 years and that it was an exciting time to be working in the field. I could not have appreciated how much change there would be in such a short time. Many changes have slipped into the routine of day-to-day work in the rush of the marketplace, but these incremental changes may be the foundation for profound shifts in the way our work is performed and evaluated. As our commitment to a sustainable society takes shape, the design professions are undergoing remarkable change. Since publication of the first edition, a number of states and major cities in the United States have adopted policies requiring green roofs on commercial structures and have committed to practices of increased energy efficiency and sustainable development. Purchasing policies of major companies, cities, and states are beginning to require that LEED-certified design professionals are on design teams and that designers reach back into their supply chains for sustainable products and practices. Read more...

The first edition of this handbook was received with much enthusiasm. It is the de-facto textbook for teaching seismic design principles at many major universities. In the United States, UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, University of Southern California, SUNY Buffalo, the University of Illinois, Washington University, the University of Texas at Austin, Georgia Tech, Cornell, and the University of Michigan have adopted the text. Abroad, the Imperial College of London and the Israel Institute of Technology are among its adopters.
This second edition contains up-to-date information on planning, analysis, and design of earthquake-resistant building structures. Its intention is to provide engineers, architects, developers, and students of structural engineering and architecture with authoritative, yet practical, design information. It bridges the gap between advances in the theories and concepts of seismic design and their implementation in practice.
This handbook has been endorsed by the International Conference of Building Officials. It contains a CD-ROM with applicable building code references and recommended practices.
Audience: The Seismic Design Handbook is a must for practicing engineers, architects, building officials, developers, teachers, and students in the field of earthquake-resistant building design. The study of water as an environmental science has drawn froma number of disciplines, including advancedmathematics and computermodeling towater well drilling. As practicing hydrogeologists, we have found ourselves referring to amyriad of sources during our professional activities for consistent definitions. Further, in this search, we have also discovered an evolution in the definition of terms. In response, we have compiled an extensive list of terms typically encountered in the field of hydrogeology. We have endeavored to be as complete as possible without becoming ‘‘a series.’’ This necessitates excluding various subjectwords that, although related, are not directly needed by the practicing hydrogeologist or is better covered ina separate book. Read more...

In fact, only open channels are less costly to construct. However, the structural mechanics of buried pipes can be complicated, and imprecisions in the properties of the soil envelope are usually too great to justify lengthy, complicated analyses. Designers and engineers need principles and methods that simplify analysis and maximize their knowledge of the pipe's performance and performance limits.Structural Mechanics of Buried Pipes minimizes complicated theories, breaks through the imprecisions in the properties of soil, and presents principles that simplify analysis and lead to designs of higher performance and safety. With knowledge built on experience, experimentation, and sound principles, the authors guide readers through the design and analysis processes. They use examples based on actual buried structures and analyze a variety of pipe-soil interaction problems. Sound principles, plentiful examples, and a straightforward presentation provide an outstanding framework for hands-on application and an ideal self-study guide. Read more...

Resource Allocation in Project Management

The book is devoted to structural issues, algorithms, and applications of resource allocation problems in project management. Special emphasis is given to a unifying framework within which a large variety of project scheduling problems can be treated. Those problems involve general temporal constraints among project activities, different types of scarce resources, and a broad class of regular and nonregular objective functions ranging from time-based and financial to resource levelling functions. The diversity of the models proposed allows for covering many features arising in scheduling applications beyond the field of project management such as short-term production planning in the manufacturing or process industries. Read more...

Its primary function is to provide the required water quantity and quality at a suitable pressure, and failure to do so is a serious system deficiency. Water quality may degrade during distribution because of the way water is treated or not treated before it is distributed, chemical and biological reactions that take place in the water during distribution, reactions between the water and distribution system materials, and contamination from external sources that occurs because of main breaks, leaks coupled with hydraulic transients, and improperly maintained storage facilities, among other things. Furthermore, special problems are posed by the utility’s need to maintain suitable water quality at the consumers tap, and the quality changes that occur in consumers’ plumbing, which is not owned or controlled by the utility. Read more...

To develop such reservoirs it is necessary to obtain the best understanding possible of the fracture network and its impact on the fluid flow within the reservoir, using the full range of geoscience and engineering datasets available at all scales. This book presents an overview of current techniques and the latest technologies used to understand and exploit fractured reservoirs. The contributions are organized into sections on outcrop analogues, the application of geophysical techniques for fracture detection and imaging, numerical and analogue modelling and case studies from fields in the Middle East, Europe and North America. A number of the case studies also consider ways of assessing uncertainties in fracture geometry description and the implications for effective reservoir management. Read more...

Bounding Uncertainty in Civil Engineering: Theoretical Background

In engineering contexts, random sets are useful when there is scarce or imprecise information as well as when a model for the engineering system is imprecise (e.g., discretization errors, different competing models, upper and lower bounds in limit analysis). Random sets generalize the concept of random variables from point measures to set measures; equivalently, they embody a convex set of probability measures.

Taking an engineering approach rather than a mathematical one, Random Sets in Civil Engineering is a gentle introduction to the subject that does not require advanced mathematical knowledge. Basic ideas and methods are presented and demonstrated with the aid of simple worked-out examples and suggested problems. Connections are clarified to the more general theory of imprecise probabilities and to other non classical models of uncertainty and approximate reasoning in decision making (e.g., fuzzy sets and evidence theory).

The book serves as a reference for practicing engineers involved in planning, design, construction and management of civil infrastructures, as well as a graduate-level textbook. Readers interested in uncertainty modelling will find general solutions and algorithms, which may also be applied to problems in other fields beyond engineering.

In the second volume of the book (to be planned in the future), the application of the new methods is demonstrated for selected examples with real case-histories from civil engineering: reliability analysis of Read more...

Engineering the City: How Infrastructure Works

Where do these services come from? How are they transported? The answer is infrastructure, or the inner, and sometimes invisible, workings of the city. Roads, railroads, bridges, telephone wires, and power lines are visible elements of the infrastructure; sewers, plumbing pipes, wires, tunnels, cables, and sometimes rails are usually buried underground or hidden behind walls. Engineering the City tells the fascinating story of infrastructure as it developed through history along with the growth of cities. Experiments, games, and construction diagrams show how these structures are built, how they work, and how they affect the environment of the city and the land outside it.

Hydraulics of Dams and River Structures

This is more significant in the millennium development goals owing to scarcity of water for the ever-increasing population of the world. The objective of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners to exchange views and experiences on hydraulics of structures associated with rivers and dams. It is further hoped and anticipated that this would lead to a state of the art of the current practice to improve design of hydraulicstructures especially in developing countries. Not overlooking the ever growing need for more enhanced and profound non-structural approaches in water resources management issues, it is deliberated that through such a conference the wealth of knowledge and experience in the field would be shared and the structural aspect of water resources management is given its deserved share in sustainable development of infra-structure. In this respect it is hoped that series of specialised conferences of this nature will continue to be held in future. Hydraulic researchers had been leading air-water flow studies until the mid-1950s. Since progresses have been dominated by multiphase flow experts despite the relevance of “white water” phenomena to hydraulic engineering. In this lecture the writer reviews the basic mechanisms of air entrainment: singular aeration and interfacial entrainment. The relevant instrumentation and data processing technique are detailed.
Tunelling and Tunnel Mechanics: A Rational Approach to Tunnelling

Pioneering processes are commonplace and innovative thinking continues to rewrite the rules. In civil engineering, tunnelling is one of the few areas where new horizons are constantly being discovered.
As rock mechanics is less developed and less known than soil mechanics, the principles of this young discipline are included in this book. I also attempted to integrate theoretical and practical viewpoints, since I consider both of them indispensable to engineering. The often encountered attitude of practitioners to blame theory (and vice versa) is regrettable. The theory addressed here refers to the mechanics of soil/rock behaviour and its interaction with the various support structures. Some chapters of the book aim at the description of planning and construction processes and, thus, need no reference to theory. Some other chapters contain both, practical and theoretical aspects. Read more...

Design of Blast Resistant Buildings in Petrochemical Facilities

Generally this involves quantifying the blast overpressures that could result from accidental explosions, establishing the design blast loads from these overpressures, setting the structural performance requirements, and designing the building structure to withstand these loads within the required performance limits. Blast resistant design, or the structural strengthening of buildings, is one of the measures an owner may employ to minimize the risk to people and facilities from the hazards of accidental explosions in a plant. Other mitigative or preventive measures, including siting (adequate spacing from potential explosion hazards) and hazard reduction (inventory and process controls, occupancy limitations, etc.), arc not covered in this report.
This report is intended to be a Slate-of-thc-Practice set of guidelines. The recommendations provided are based on published information and actual design. A review of current practice, internal company standards, published documents, and the current work of related groups was conducted The report includes a list of references to provide additional information. The reference list emphasizes an emphasis on readily available commercial publications and government reports. Because of their relevance to this report, several publications deserve mention here. Following this introduction putting the subject in context, the book starts with some basic guidelines for enhancing the resilience of buildings to blast loading (Chapter 2). An explanation of the nature of explosions and the mechanism of blast waves in free air is then given. This leads to a discussion of the loading that explosions place on structures, both inside and out, and the concept of an idealized loading is introduced (Chapter 3). The response of buildings, people and equipment to blast loading is illustrated. A method of analysis is suggested whereby the strain energy absorbed is equated to the work done or kinetic energy imparted and the structure reduced to a single degree of freedom (Chapter 4).

Successful earthquake engineering therefore requires a broad background in subjects, ranging from the geologic causes and effects of earthquakes to understanding the impact of these effects on foundations, buildings, structures, the infrastructure, and even their social and economic impact. The Earthquake Engineering Handbook is a comprehensive resource that covers the spectrum of topics relevant to designing for and mitigating earthquakes. In it, international experts present engineering practices, research, and developments in North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim countries. The emphasis is on professional applications, with discussion ranging from basic dynamics and geoscience to new technologies intended to avoid rather than resist the forces of earthquakes. Covering both traditional and innovative practices, the Earthquake Engineering Handbook is the first professional reference that brings together all of earthquake engineering's many facets. Formulas, tables, and illustrations give immediate answers to questions arising in practice, and summaries of the essential elements of each topic paint a global picture from which readers can develop understanding and the ability to think beyond the results presented. Read more...

Each chapter presents a shoring system type description, how it is constructed, equipment requirements, cost analysis, etc. Safety, inspection and testing codes and methods included throughout.

Summary: Earth Retention Systems Handbook
Rating: 4

A good practical handbook. It is a good reference book for both geotechnical and structural engineers.

Summary: great book! really a bible!
Rating: 5

this book is really great! it covers a lot of techniques and methods that are otherwise dispersed in magazines and companies, and that are rarely classified. it offers a section on design, monitoring, tables and software, for micropiles to anchor to sheet piles. i have no words. a great thanks to the author and the editor, for your contribution to the diffusion of knowledge. Read more...

Steel Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

This book explains the metallurgy of steel and its heat treatment for non-metallurgists. It starts from simple concepts_beginning at the level of high-school chemisty classes_and building to more complex concepts involved in heat treatment of most all types of steel as well as cast iron. This book is THE practicle primer on steel metallurgy for those who heat, forge, or machine steel.

Summary: A must for knifemakers
Rating: 5

Consider this the Cliff Notes of steel metalurgy. It is an invaluable resource for those of us who make knives and other cutting tools. Forging and grinding a great looking knife with good geometry isn't even half of the story; manipulating the crystalin structure of the steel with heat is at least 75% of it. Steel sellection counts somewhat less. This book gives a good "in depth overview" of what steel and other ferrous alloys are, what their properties are, and how those properties can be used and manipulated. It gives an understanding of what is happening to the steel, not just a cookbook intruction of starting at point A and proceeding to the finished product. It gives knowledge of what to do when the cookbook fails and how to modify the instructions to make things come out better. It allows technique to evolve into art. Read more...
