The Tarrasch Formula

The Tarrasch Formula's central metaphor is an interesting one - the pack versus the herd. Imagine your own pieces as a pack of wolves trying to isolate a sick buffalo from your opponent's herd. The premise is that steady play to reduce the power of a single enemy piece, turning down the volume until its normal voice becomes a whisper,' can be enough to win a game. The authors examine play against weak knights, bishops, and opposite-colored bishops in situations where a piece is cut off or misplaced. They have a chapter on heavier pieces and on zugzwang. Finally they revisit Philidor's Defense from Palatnik's unique perspective with the Palatnik Gambit, melding the Tarrasch Formula and Palatnik's fresh approach to an old opening idea into a viable opening repertoire. The 57 games in this book will very likely transform the way you play chess, providing a straightforward and effective method for improving your decision-making and move selection.Features:Examine play against weak knights Read more...

The Penguin Book provides an overview of all the common opening variations. And by reading over this book, a player will gain a valuable familiarity with almost all of the openings that he is likely to encounter over the board. This book does not dive deep into any specific opening, but rather gives the reader a basic understanding of all of them.
I read this book when I was rated about 1400. It was my first opening book and I feel that it gave me a great foundation to build on.
After reading this book, I realized what openings suited my style best. And I later purchased books specifically focused on the openings I had chosen.
But it all began with this book.
I am now rated approxamately 1900 and own hundreds of chess books. But I will always appreciate this one for getting me started in the right direction.

The French Defence: A Complete Black Repertoire

Black can enter the French defence, as a separate opening, on move one. I believe that seems to be comfortable for him – to have a reliable defence against 1.е4. The point is however, that chess is becoming more popular and universal and you should have various weapons in your opening armour. Still, if you change skilfully your variations inside the French defence, it may serve you faithfully for Black even if it is your only way to counter 1.e4.
According to the generally accepted classification, the French defence is semi-open. I think it can suit the style both of aggressive tactical players, as well as of the adherents to the patient positional maneuvering. The philosophical justification of the French defence is quite solid. Black complies with the fact that he will fail to compete with White for the dominance of every square on the chessboard, right from the beginning of the game. On the other hand, he fights fiercely for the
centre and attacks it with undermining pawn-moves like с7-с5 and f7- f6 and exerts piece-pressure with Bf8-b4, Ng8-f6, Nb8-c6, Ng8-e7-f5,
Qd8-b6.
The arguments pro and against the correctness of the French defence have begun long ago and continue until now. The main themes are Black’s lack of space and the consequence of that the fate of his light-squared bishop, which is severely restricted right on move one.
Meanwhile, all “French” players know quite well the rule that sometimes, at the decisive moment of the game, the same “bad” French bish Read more...

My feeling is the the win was mechanical and boring I like attacking players like Alekhine, especially Adolf Anderson, the winner of the " Immortal Game. " But as I grow older, my taste change, players like Tal, Shirov, Judit, there games I still like, but I also now appreaciate the games of Karpov. His stategy is excellent. If one have patience to play through his games, the games are as enjoyable as Kasparov's or Alekhine. Why I mention Lasker, I think he with Karpov do not have the respect from Chess Fans. Lasker and Karpov, from any point of view, concerning their results, playing stregth, must be included in the greatest players of all time. Fischer's style is in between Karpov and Kasparov. So that is why Fischer's games are so fascintating. But it is pity for chess fans that Fischer did not play after becoming Champion. Imagine the following scenario, if Fischer continued to play, Karpov, even if the aborted championship acutally held and even if Karpov lost, Karpov would still improved. Then comes Kasparov. Then let us imagine a year in 1980s, say 1985. Fischer at that tme is 42, if still active, then he still would be one of the or the the strongest players in the world, Karpov,at his peak in 1985, then the rising star Kasparov, if these 3 greatest player of all time play to each other, friends, imagine what happen!!
Starting Out: 1 e4!: A Reliable Repertoire for the Improving Player

Maintaining and preparing an opening repertoire is a very demanding task and requires A LOT of thought in terms of move orders and transpositional considerations. In this book Neil does a lot of the work for you. He reccomends lines that have stood the test of time and will NOT be refuted.
The layout of the book is pleasant with a discussion on ideas and then a miniture game illustrating those ideas. And follows up with annotated model games where it goes over pitfalls for both sides and deviations from theory. A well balanced discussion to say the least.
Looking closer; although I do not agree with some of the lines that he suggests due to the fact that I am a lover of the Ruy Lopez "The King of Openings", and would prefer playing that opening rather than the Scotch, but that's just me. Also I feel that it does give an adequate amount of open sicilian material to stay afloat but would require an entire book (such as beating the sicilian 3) for adequate preparation against strong opponents (elo 2000 and up-and the ones who religiously go over reams and reams of memorized theory every waking hour). But the idea is to pick and choose what positions that you like to have and learn the theory behind it.

Play the Semi-Slav

Following on the heels of his extremely well written and researched book on the Qc2 Nimzo Indian, Vigorito has done what may seem like an impossible task: taking the mammoth theory and practice of the Semi-Slav and distilling it into a workable repertoire. Take that statement with a grain of salt, please: this is not an easy book. The Semi-Slav is not an easy opening. On the contrary, it's perhaps the most complicated and theoretical queen pawn defense available to black. However, Vigorito's treatment renders the theory workable and enjoyable. Did I mention he provides multiple lines to play against most of white's options? That's right, not only is the Moscow deeply covered (including the ultra-topical Anti-Moscow Gambit), but my favorite line in chess, the Botvinnik, is also thoroughly explored. I can't say enough about the original analysis and re-assessments of various lines. I have wanted to play this opening for years, but there is so much information that it has been almost impossible for a non professional to do so until now. Another huge success for Vigorito and Quality Chess, which has quickly taken it's place with Gambit and Everyman as leaders in chess publishing (Frankly, Quality Chess's offerings have surpassed both those esteemed publishers in my opinion. Especially recommended are Marin's two volumes on the open games. A better source could not be found on that material). If Mr. Vigorito happens to read this, congratulations and thanks for a truly excellent an Read more...

Understanding the Sacrifice: Sacrifice Your Way to Success

The book is 143 pages long, but makes up for it's slight thinness by great content. The author doesn't waste space with philosophical comments or give game after game with little explanation. Rather, Dunnington manages to completely perfect the balance between annotation, analysis, and games. Speaking of the games themselves, Dunnington's choices couldn't be better. Most are games by extremely creative but not quite world champion status grandmasters, such as Akopian, Bacrot, and Shirov. The author also uses the classic games Saemisch-Nimzowitch and Alekhine-Johner but their instructiveness trumps their well-known status. Read more...

This is one of the great books on attack and defense. I purchased it after I discovered the more recent title by Christiansen, Rocking the Ramparts. My results have improved immensely from studying these two books.
Christiansen teaches both attack and defense in the greatest detail. He dishes up heaping portions of juicy, delightful, brilliantly-selected games. His commentary is the highest quality. It is rare to find such a book from one of the most active and strongest Grandmasters in the world, who won his third U. S. Championship in 2002. His great practical playing strength shines brightly through the pages of this book. As one plays through the games and commentary, one is treated to a steady stream of positions that define high-class, interesting, attacking chess.

Behind Deep Blue: Building the Computer that Defeated the World Chess Champion

I found the matches to be fascinating, as did the media who put the results of the matches on the front pages of newspapers such as USA Today. I also happen to be a computer science major, who works full time as a software engineer. This book for me was the perfect blend of my two main interests in life - chess and computers.
Hsu tells a very fascinating story. It is not just about chess and computers however. It is the story of a young immigrant who comes to the US to study, and ends up doing something that is of a major historical significance in the minds of many people.
This book was a real page turner. I did not want to put it down. I thought the path leading Hsu to work on chess programs was fascinating. He made a suggestion to the leading computer chess professor who did not like it. This inspired him to implement the idea. It was a case of several things coming together, which ended up leading to the creation of a great computer project.
Hsu's story of hard work was very inspiring. I liked how he did not consider the match to be "man vs machine", but man as a toolmaker vs man as a performer. If you found the Deep Blue matches interesting, you will certainly enjoy this book.

In a chess problem the desired conclusion has to be reached in the stipulated number of moves, the rules being similar to the over-the-board play, unless otherwise stated. This collection contains 225 Miniatures—all two movers. The overall order followed in presenting problems is that of increasing number of white pieces. When two problems have exactly the same material, the older one comes first. The chess terms used in this collection have been defined as exhaustively as possible, some after the introduction and others in the body of the text where they first appear. There is also an index at the end, alphabetically giving authors' names with problem numbers. Read more...

Secrets of Attacking Chess: Understanding When,Where and How to Attack

I have this vision of Marin as an elderly Klingon, waving his flask of blood wine and regaling you with the most fantastic stories! It's like he's sitting in front of you with a chess board, showing you everything, pausing for effect, slamming down a devastating move then demonstrating why there is no good reply to it. He's with you, he's involved, he's enthusiastic, passionate. The text is alive. It's more like reading a novel than a chess book! These must be his own words; no translator is mentioned. He tells you what he thinks are the psychological processes in the minds of top players - then backs it up by demonstrating exactly the same human foibles in his own games - not something he could do if he were not a strong GM! This is a benefit of having a strong GM as an author - not only do you get absolutely accurate analysis, but also the insight into how much of it was seen at the board. Frighteningly large amounts! Great vaulted cathedrals of variations, stained glass and all. OK there's lots of analysis, but don't be scared by the look of the pages. Imagine the guy in front of you, and it's like he's telling you stories of dragon-slaying, and the sequences of moves are the lurid details of how he chased it behind a rock and was nearly eaten when it sprang out over the top. The lines of analysis are as necessary and as amazing as the moves that actually happened in Read more...

As usual the books were collected from various sources, notably Ru-Board, Lionroad Chess Forum, Demonoid, eMule, Usenet, Russian and Spanish websites, personal aficionado blogs etc. A warm thanks to all persons involved.

I checked the books one by one and did some editing myself. Not every book in this compilation is totally "new". Sometimes an existing scan is improved with better resolution, smaller size, cover, index, right page order, missing pages etc. And it happens also that someone does a new scan from an existing book.

The books are written mainly in English, but also in other Western languages (German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese). Books in Russian were included ONLY when they can easily be understood by non-Russian speakers."

Foundations of Chess Strategy

Chess is a game where profound strategic thinking must be allied with clever short-term tactics. Most previous works on strategy focus on specific aspects of chess strategy, but Lars Bo Hansen's aims here are different. He creates a framework in which the various elements can be systematically included and organized - a framework that will help chess-players to think about chess strategy during practical play. The theory of business strategy is extensively developed, and Hansen adopts the novel approach of investigating whether any of the vast amounts of research and modelling done for business purposes can be applied in chess. He finds that there are indeed many useful parallels, and focuses on how these ideas can be used to good effect by chess-players both in their preparation and when making over-the-board decisions.
About the Author
Lars Bo Hansen is a well-known grandmaster from Denmark. He has won the Danish Championship on two occasions, and represented his country in four Olympiads, winning a bronze medal for his individual performance in 1990. His many tournament victories include first prize in the strong Copenhagen Open in both 1997 and 2000. Away from the board, he teaches and lectures on business studies, with a particular focus on marketing, organization and strategy. Chess is 99% tactics. So to be a good chess player, you have to spend a lot of your training time on tactics. Although basic tactics are explained in a number good books, complicated tactics – the kind that separate tournament winners from the pack – require intuition, imagination and precision. The Magic of Chess Tactics helps you develop these qualities.
Aimed primarily at aspiring chess players from club to master level who seriously want to improve their chess understanding, The Magic of Chess Tactics provides examples selected for both their entertainment and instructional value – as well as detailed explanations and exercises.

Claus Dieter Meyer, chess author and FIDE Master, is a well known analyst and professional chess trainer. Karsten Muller is an International Grandmaster and co-author, along with Frank Lamprecht, of the highly acclaimed Secrets of Pawn Endings and Fundamental Chess Endings. His popular monthly column Endgame Corner appears right here at ChessCafe.com.

"I have come to realise that there are basically two types of chess tactics. First, simple kinds of combinations you need to know when you start to play chess. I still believe they are the basis of everything. Things that computers see in a half-second. But the book is not about them. For those simple tactics, old Koblentz books are more than enough. This book is about *complicated* chess tactics, the kind you sometimes need hours of analysis just to discover the truth of Read more...

Grandmaster John Emms offers a new arsenal of opening weapons with which to attack your unsuspecting opponents. Starting with the move 1 e4, the reader is armed with systems against all possible black defenses. In each case learning ideas is more important than memorizing long variations, so this repertoire should be ideal for players who don't have the luxury of being able to spend countless hours studying theory. This is the first truly modern one-volume endgame encyclopedia. It makes full use of endgame tablebases; where previous authors could only make educated guesses, Muller and Lamprecht have often been able to state the definitive truth, or get much closer to it. New time-controls involve competitive games being played to finish in one session, so it is especially important that chess players understand the key endgame principles this book provides comprehensive assistance for any players wishing to study the endgame. In addition to a feast of detailed analysis, the authors emphasize the practical side of endgame play, describing rules of thumb, principles and thinking methods. "Fundamental Chess Endings" is both the ideal endgame reference work, and a book that can profitably and enjoyably be read from start to finish.

About the Author
Karsten Muller is a young grandmaster from Germany, who competes regularly in the Bundesliga and in international events. He finished third in the German Championship in 1996, and was runner-up in 1997. He is a noted authority on both practical and theoretical endgames. Frank Lamprecht is also from Germany, and is an international master. He has been a chess trainer since 1983 and was also co-author (with Karsten Muller) of the highly acclaimed "Secrets of Pawn Endings." Read more...

But there are so many complicated variations -- how can you memorize them all?

You can't -- and you don't have to! If you understand the basic goals of the opening you're playing, you will know which moves fit logically into its overall scheme. This classic, best-selling volume, now completely reset in modern algebraic notation, explains everything you need to know to play the opening sensibly and successfully.

Reuben Fine, an International Grandmaster, is one of the world's top players and a leading theoretician of chess.
Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition

The explanations make the moves of the master easy to follow and show the reader where to place his pieces to make powerful, telling combinations.

Review
The book contains 33 classic games with very detailed, elementary notes on the moves. A great format for explaining the game to a beginning player, and mostly well-written (it is somewhat annoying because it is repetitive: how many times do you have to be told the merits of e4?). I found it a very easy book to read, I was even able to get through it without a board on an airplane.

However, even for a beginner, I think the book (written in 1957) should be approached primarily as of historical interest. The 33 games include one from 1952, one from 1945, one from 1942 and only 4 games from the 1930s. The collection contains only a single Sicilian and that from 1904 (and black loses, in fact the collection contains 24 white wins, 9 for black and no draws...a misleading distribution of results)

The analysis is so entertaining and clear, it is truly sad to see how wrong it appears to modern eyes. For example, the repeated admonitions against h3/h6 to avert or drive away the g4/g5 pin...according to Chernev, this common move (albeit often not the best) is only good for allowing the opposing Queen access to one's King. One can sense disapproval of the fianchetto on similar grounds.

Perhaps the best way to read this book is as a companion to Nunn's "Understanding Chess Move by Move" w Read more...

The title sounds like it's a primer, but it is not!, August 26, 1998
By jcsperson (Chapel Hill, NC USA):

The title might lead one to believe that this is a beginner's manual, but this book is really aimed at the weekend tournament warrior, probably rated at least 1500. I have several beginning students and am always on the lookout for new ideas and angles in primers to enhance my lessons. I pulled this book off the shelf at the library in anticipation of doing just that. Opening it to the first page of chapter 1, I found myself struggling to solve the "White to move and win" diagram! What kind of beginner's manual is this!? After three full minutes the winning idea finally came and a quick thumb-through of the rest of the book confirmed that I wasn't going to find many lesson ideas. Rather, this book is intended to change the stereotyped way amateur players think at the board. Befitting Hartson's training as a psychoanalyst, his purpose is to get into the amateur's head and alter his attitudes and thinking at the board. There is a lot of great advice here presented in short, 1-2 page lessons based on master tournament play. Many first-hand examples from the author's own games. This little book would be a great help to tournament players rated 1500-2200 (the lessons turned out to be for me). And at the price, it is a certified bargain.

New Edition 19.08.2007 0_00_00.jpg" align="left" hspace="10" />After the immense success of the first two editions, the chess world has been anticipating the next instalment with baited breath... and now the wait is over! Once again this is a fully revised edition of John Watson's classic Play the French, providing Black with a complete repertoire in the French Defence, one of the most strategically and dynamically complex opening systems. As is typical with his books, Watson often arms the reader with not one, but a choice of two and sometimes three lines against every main variation. Watson also presents a thorough grounding on the positional and tactical aspects of the opening and outlines the typical plans for both White and Black. This is particularly welcome for those newcomers wishing to add the French Defence to their openings armoury. Last, but not least, hardened French Defence devotees will find plenty of original analysis and suggestions to sink their teeth into.
The previous editions of Play the French were amongst the most powerful opening books of the 1980s and 90s, and this only added to the large number of French Defence advocates at every level of chess. Now Watson has updated his analysis for French Defence players of the new millennium.

Just twelve when his precocious genius earned him first tournament
successes in 1972 at the age of twenty-nine he took the world title by defeating the Soviet champion Boris Spassky in the notorious match at Reykjavik.

How he achieved his dominant position can be seen in David Levy's clear and knowledgeable presentation of the development of Fischer's dynamic style. It is a story of unfolding genius involving the fusion of huge skills, great daring, and total dedication to a game of increasing popularity.

Reviewer: A reader
When I was reading this book more than 15 years ago, I took it everywhere! My fascination with Bobby Fischer started here. Although Fischer had become Champion before I discovered the game, his 6-0 matches leading up to his battle with Spassky (unthinkable if one considers the high level of grandmaster play), his sudden adoption of queen-pawn openings.....one of the greatest dramas played out in the history of the game had me spellbound!

Reviewer: A reader
This is a good book-the comments on Fischer are interesting and there are many lesser-known games which are good. Read more...

The two greatest challenges for beginning chess players are not only to survive the openings phase, but also to choose appropriate attack and defence formations in the process. Winning Chess Openings shows players how to do both. In Yasser Seirawan's entertaining, easy-to-follow style, they are shown formations that can be used with other White or Black pieces.

Winning Chess Openings explains how to:

* Build a safe house for a king
* Estimate losses of ten moves or fewer
* Utilise the elements: time, force, space, and pawn structure
* Plan strategy based on time-tested opening principles of play
* Employ a defence for Black against any White opening
* Apply an opening for White used by World Champions

Winning Chess Openings will help readers develop a solid understanding of opening principles that can be applied to every game they play--without having to memorize a dizzying array of tedious and lengthy opening lines. Read more...

Most experts agree that to reach a high standard at chess, one must not only be able to calculate properly but also master the many positional points of the game. However, while tactical ability is clear-cut and can be improved simply by the continual practice of puzzles, learning the finer points of positional play that come so naturally to Grandmasters can seem like a frightening task for the less experienced player. In this book, Grandmaster John Emms aims to solve this problem, giving the reader a thorough grooming on all the crucial aspects of chess strategy. Moving on from the basic principles, Emms draws upon both his own experiences and those of other international players to unravel the mystery surrounding positional chess. This book will be particularly helpful for those who have previously honed their chess skills with the highly popular Simple Chess.
