Ready-to-Eat Foods: Microbial Concerns and Control Measures

With growing consumer demand for ready-to-eat (RTE) foods that are wholesome and require less handling and preparation, the production of RTE foods has increased and their variety has expanded considerably, spanning from bagged spinach to pre-packaged school lunches. But since RTE foods are normally consumed directly without cooking — a step that kills pathogenic microorganisms that may be present in the food products — concerns exist with regard to their safety.

Several severe and high-profile outbreaks of food-borne illness linked to the consumption of RTE foods have prompted the USDA and FDA to issue stringent rules and regulations governing the manufacturing of RTE foods. Ready-to-Eat Foods: Microbial Concerns and Control Measures comprehensively reviews individual common RTE food and their specific safety-related aspects. This text explores the extensive research conducted by the food industry, academia, and research institutes that examines the potential health risk of contaminated RTE foods, investigates the growth behavior of common contaminating foodborne pathogens, and develops intervention technologies and control measures.

The book supplies an overview of food safety of RTE foods and various categories into which they fall. It also addresses the microorganisms of concern, the effect of processing on the survival of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms, food safety, practical control measures, and intervention strategies.
Nanocomposites: Preparation, Properties and Performance

Nanophase materials and technology is the new application technology in recent 10 years along with the development of science and technology. Nanocomposites have attracted tremendous attention due to their potential applications in biomedical, catalytic, separation, chemical sensing, fuel cell, capacitor, microfabrication, tribological, resonant coupling, high flux gas transport and etc. Nanocomposite materials are complex of nanophase materials and other materials, it optimises the performance of traditional materials. Various nanocomposites have been synthesised in a wide range of polymerisation, sol-gel, deposition, magnetron sputtering, supercritical fluid, sonochemistry, laser, etc.Among these works, many strategies were addressed to improve nanocomposites mechanical properties by inclusions (fibers, whiskers, platelets, or particles). The embedding of inclusions in a host matrix to make composites, which gives material properties not achieved by either phase alone, has been a common practice for many years. Traditionally, composites were reinforced with micronsised inclusions. Recently, processing techniques have been developed to allow the size of inclusions to go down to nanoscale. With the recent developments in the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields, the correlation of composite properties with nanostructure has become a point of great interest. As a result, much of the work is still ongoing and there is yet to be a definite conclusion on the effect of nano-sized Read more...

Molecular and biochemical toxicology, 4th edition

This is the 4th edition of a series that was initiated in 1980 as Introduction to Biochemical Toxicology , edited by Ernest Hodgson and Frank E. Guthrie and based on a course at North Carolina State University that has now been offered for almost 30 years. The 2nd and 3rd editions, with the same title, were edited by Hodgson and Levi and by Hodgson and Smart. The changes in both scope and specifi c content are greater between this edition and the previous one and, in fact, are so extensive as to require several important changes. First, to recognize the changing roles of the co - editors, they are now listed as Smart and Hodgson. Second, the title has been changed to Molecular and Biochemical Toxicology . The incorporation of the principles and methods of molecular biology into mechanistic toxicology has continued apace and is refl ected not only in the change in title but also in the addition of new chapters and the integration of molecular material into most, if not all, of the chapters represented in the 3rd edition and extensively revised for the 4th. Read more...

(It is). . . imperative to consider an ABG for virtually any symptom. . ., sign. . ., or scenario. . . that occurs in a clinical setting, whether it be the clinic, hospital, or ICU.’’1 For the uninitiated, the analysis of blood gas can be a daunting task. Hapless medical students, badly constrained for time, have struggled ineffectively with Hasselbach’s modification of the Henderson equation; been torn between the Copenhagen and the Boston schools of thought; and lately, been confronted with the radically different strong-ion approach of Peter Stewart. Read more...

Modeling Biomolecular Networks in Cells: Structures and Dynamics

Modeling Biomolecular Networks in Cells shows how the interaction between the molecular components of basic living organisms can be modelled mathematically and the models used to create artificial biological entities within cells. Such forward engineering is a difficult task because of the ill-posed nature of the problems and because of the fundamental complexity of the interactions within even the most primitive biological cell. The nonlinear dynamical methods espoused in this book simplify the biology so that it can be successfully understood and the synthesis of simple biological oscillators and rhythm-generators made feasible. Such simple but, from an engineering point of view, unconventional units can then be co-ordinated using intercellular signal biomolecules.

Principles of Gene Manipulation

An objective study of genetic engineering is thus mandatory for everyone in the 21st century. This book is one of the best treatments of genetic engineering that I have read, and I am speaking not as a biologist but as someone actively involved in bioinformatics and computational biology. The explanations of the techniques of genetic engineering are excellent and the reader with a fairly good background in biochemistry should have no problem following the presentation. Readers without such a background will find the reading a little more demanding. One can only admire the ingenuity of the many researchers and technicians who have developed these techniques. The only thing missing in the book are exercises at the end of each chapter to test the readers understanding of the relevant concepts. Read more...

Excitatory Amino Acids - Clinical Results with Antagonists

During the 1980s, glutamate gained the status of the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. Receptors were classified as N-methyl-Daspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptors, based on electrophysiological studies (Hicks et al., 1978; Davies et al., 1979; Watkins and Evans, 1981; McLennan and Liu, 1982). NMDA receptors are stimulated most potently by NMDA itself. Currents activated by NMDA receptors are carried by Na § K § and Ca 2§ (Dingledine, 1983; MacDermott et al., 1986). The non-NMDA receptors were later divided into three groups, t~- amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors, kainate receptors, and metabotropic glutamate receptors, based on the preferred agonists, AMPA, kainate, and glutamate (for a review, see Watkins et al., 1990). AMPA and kainate receptors are ion channel coupled mainly Na § channels, whereas metabotropic glutamate receptors mediate responses via G-protein-coupled second messengers. Read more...

The exponential growth in microelectronic processing power and the size of dynamic memorie has been achieved by significant downscaling of the minimum feature size. Smaller feature sizes result in increased functional density, faster speed, and lower costs. In this process one is reaching the limits where quantum effects and fluctuations are beginning to play an important role.
This book reflects the achievements of the present times and future directions of research on nanoscopic dimensions. Read more...

Sustainable agriculture is a discipline that addresses current issues such as climate change, increasing food and fuel prices, poor-nation starvation, rich-nation obesity, water pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, pest control, and biodiversity depletion. Novel, environmentally-friendly solutions are proposed based on integrated knowledge from sciences as diverse as agronomy, soil science, molecular biology, chemistry, toxicology, ecology, economy, and social sciences. Indeed, sustainable agriculture decipher mechanisms of processes that occur from the molecular level to the farming system to the global level at time scales ranging from seconds to centuries. For that, scientists use the system approach that involves studying components and interactions of a whole system to address scientific, economic and social issues. In that respect, sustainable agriculture is not a classical, narrow science. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach that treats only negative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats problem sources. Because most actual society issues are now intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions to build a safer world. This book series gathers review articles that analyze current agricultural issues and knowledge, then propose alternative solutions. It will t Read more...

An invaluable tool in non-invasive clinical oncology diagnostics

Addressing the critical need in clinical oncology robust and stable signal processing in magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), Signal Processing in Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy with Biomedical Applications explores cutting-edge theory-based innovations for obtaining reliable quantitative information from MR signals for cancer diagnostics. By defining the natural framework of signal processing using the well-established theory of quantum physics, the book illustrates how advances in signal processing can optimize MRS.

The authors employ the fast Pade transform (FPT) as the unique polynomial quotient for the spectral analysis of MR time signals. They prove that residual spectra are necessary but not sufficient criteria to estimate the error invoked in quantification. Instead, they pre a more comprehensive strategy that monitors constancy of spectral parameters as one of the most reliable signatures of stability and robustness of quantification. The authors also use Froissart doublets to unequivocally distinguish between genuine and spurious resonances in both noise-free and noise-corrupted time signals, enabling the exact reconstruction of all the genuine spectral parameters. They show how the FPT resolves and quantifies tightly overlapped resonances that are abundantly seen in MR spectra generated using data from encoded time signals from the brai Read more...

The body senses the environment by the interaction of specialized sensory organs with some aspect or another of the environment. The central nervous system utilizes these sensations in order to coordinate and organize muscular movements, shift from uncomfortable positions, and adjust properly. One relevant question is “what is the relative contribution of gravity to these sensory and motor functions?”

This book reviews the effects of space flight on the functioning of the sensory organs primarily used for balance and spatial orientation. Disorientation and malaise so frequently encountered during early exposure to microgravity and on return to Earth are described. Theories and actual data regarding the role of the central nervous system in the adaptation of sensory-motor functions (including the control of posture, eye movements, and self-orientation) to changing environmental gravity levels are explored. This book contains many illustrations, including photographs of equipment and experiments flown onboard space missions. Read more...

Reaction-Transport Systems

This book is an introduction to the dynamics of reaction-diffusion systems, with a focus on fronts and stationary spatial patterns. Emphasis is on systems that are non-standard in the sense that either the transport is not simply classical diffusion (Brownian motion) or the system is not homogeneous. A important feature is the derivation of the basic phenomenological equations from the mesoscopic system properties.

Topics addressed include transport with inertia, described by persistent random walks and hyperbolic reaction-transport equations and transport by anomalous diffusion, in particular subdiffusion, where the mean square displacement grows sublinearly with time. In particular reaction-diffusion systems are studied where the medium is in turn either spatially inhomogeneous, compositionally heterogeneous or spatially discrete.

Applications span a vast range of interdisciplinary fields and the systems considered can be as different as human or animal groups migrating under external influences, population ecology and evolution, complex chemical reactions, or networks of biological cells. Several chapters treat these applications in detail. Read more...

Emphasizing the scientific and machine learning applications of genetic algorithms instead of applications to optimization and engineering, the book could serve well in an actual course on adaptive algorithms. The authors include excellent problem sets, these being divided up into "thought exercises" and "computer exercises" in genetic algorithm. Practical use of genetic algorithms demands an understanding of how to implement them, and the authors do so in the last two chapters of the book by giving the applications in various fields. This book also outlines some ideas on when genetic algorithms and genetic programming should be used, and this is useful since a newcomer to the field may be tempted to view a genetic algorithm as merely a fancy Monte Carlo simulation. The most difficult part of using a genetic algorithm is how to encode the population, and the authors discuss various ways to do this. Various "exotic" approaches to improve the performance of genetic algorithms are also discussed such as the "messy" genetic algorithms, adaptive genetic algorithm and hybrid genetic algorithm. Read more...

The technique of bioremediation uses living organisms--usually bacteria and fungi--to remove pollutants from soil and water with minimal disturbance to these environments. This approach, which is potentially more cost-effective than traditional techniques such as incineration of soils and carbon filtration of water, requires an understanding of how organisms transform chemicals, how they survive in polluted environments, and how they can be used in the field. This book examines these issues for many of the most serious and common environmental contaminants, presenting the most recent position on the application of bioremediation to polluted soil and water.

However, these resources are finite and expected to enter a period of diminishing availability within the next several decades.

To move economies based on petroleum and its feedstocks to fuels and materials that are renewable, environmentally friendly, and of greater availability, the science and engineering communities world-wide are exploring many options. As discussed in this book, principal alternative energy resources that scientists have been exploring are wind, solar radiation, hydropower, geothermal power, coal combined with carbon sequestration, hydrogen, and biomass.
In addition, biomass and biologically-generated polymers are attractive renewable feedstocks as energy-producing materials. It appears likely that no single resource will offer the versatility of petroleum in the future. As a result, several complementary technologies are being explored to meet the world's diverse needs for energy and resource materials. Read more...

The structures of most naturally occurring porphyrins were first elucidated by the efforts of Hans Fischer, and great progress was made in our knowledge of chlorophyll by Stoll and Willstatter by applying the best current methods of organic chemistry. The next major advance was made by biochemists who used newly available isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to tackle the formation of porphyrins in biological systems. This was started by the discovery by Shemin and Rittenberg that, of all the amino acids, glycine specifically supplied the nitrogen atoms of protoporphyrin IX. This led to the elucidation of one of the major pathways for the synthesis of 5-aminolaevulinic acid, and ultimately to the origin of all the atoms in protoporphyrin IX. During this period conclusive evidence was also produced that chlorophyll and bacteriochlorophyll are formed in a series of reactions in which protoporphyrin IX is anessential intermediate. Read more...

The best part of this book is its exploration of what aging is, in biological terms, and how different modes of aging can be explained by Darwinian theory. This is not a book on how to live longer, but rather a book on what scientists are learning about the mechanisms and reasons for aging.
Kirkwood writes in a lighthearted and readable style, but unlike many popular science writers, he gives his reader total respect. In areas where I keep up with medical research, (like the long-term effects of HRT) I found his book to be right up to date with the research published within the last year.
Best of all, he has no "do this and live for ever" prescription--a nice change from most other books about aging available nowadays, which seem to have been written under the sponsorship of supplement manufacturers.

In "Data Mining Techniques for the Life Sciences", experts in the field contribute valuable information about the sources of information and the techniques used for "mining" new insights out of databases. Beginning with a section covering the concepts and structures of important groups of databases for biomolecular mechanism research, the book then continues with sections on formal methods for analyzing biomolecular data and reviews of concepts for analyzing biomolecular sequence data in context with other experimental results that can be mapped onto genomes. As a volume of the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series, this work provides the kind of detailed description and implementation advice that is crucial for getting optimal results.

Authoritative and easy to reference, "Data Mining Techniques for the Life Sciences" seeks to aid students and researchers in the life sciences who wish to get a condensed introduction into the vital world of biological databases and their many applications. Read more...

Bioremediation involves processes which reduce the overall treatment costs by using agricultural residues. Regeneration of the biosorbent further increases the cost effectiveness of the process, thus warranting its future success in solving water quality problems. Special emphasis is paid to chemical modifications resulting in tailored novel biomaterials which improve its sorption efficiency and environmental stability. In this way it can be used commercially as a simple, fast, economical, ecofriendly green technology, for the removal of toxic metals from waste water particularly in rural and remote areas of the country. Read more...

In spite of the ever increasing popularity and wide range of the use of this technology by researchers, medical technicians, factory workers, and engineers, we do not have any book that covers both the fundamentals and the advanced applications of this technology. Currently, books either concentrate on fundamental equation derivations, and thus are too theoretical, or consider only advanced applications, hoping that the readers have already gained the theoretical knowledge from another source. Read more...

Chemists are also turning to cells as a relevant and important sample to study newly developed methods. Practical Cell Analysis provides techniques, hints, and time-saving tips explaining what may be “common knowledge” to one field but are often hidden or unknown to another.

Within this practical guide:

* The procedures and protocols for cell separation, handling cells on a microscope and for using cells in microfluidic devices are presented.
* Elements of cell culture are taken and combined with the practical advice necessary to maintain a cell lab and to handle cells properly during an analysis
* The main chapters deal with the fundamentals and applied aspects of each technique, with one complete chapter focusing on statistical considerations of analyzing cells
* Many diagram-based protocols for some of the more common cell processes are included
* Chapter summaries and extensive tables are included so that key information can be looked up easily in the lab setting

Much like a good manual or cookbook this book is a useful, practical guide and a handy reference for all students, researchers and practitioners involved in cellular analysis. Read more...

Nicotinic receptors in the nervous system

Nicotine is a drug with a wide variety of effects — effects that are not black or white or even a shade of gray. Rather, the multifaceted effects of nicotine form a checkerboard pattern of effects, some of which are adverse, such as promoting tobacco smoking, and others that may provide therapeutic benefit, such as cognitive improvement and pain relief. To understand nicotine’s effects, research must progress on a spectrum of levels from nicotinic receptors through complex neurobehavioral systems to clinical outcome. This book presents research approaches to all of these levels. Considerable progress can be made by integrating research across traditional disciplines so that novel nicotinic ligands discovered in receptor studies can be used in experimental animal models to gain information about specific nicotinic systems involved in behavioral function. This functional understanding can be used to develop better nicotinic-based therapeutic treatments. Read more...

Now, the accomplishments of these three generations of dedicated scientists not only have extended the range of our knowledge over a tremendous zoologic spectrum, but also have provided us with detailed mechanisms of behaviorally relevant hormone actions at the molecular, biophysical, and genetic levels. Because of the ability of workers in our field to incorporate all the tools of experimental, chemical, and molecular endocrinology, as well as the insights of clinical endocrinology, into our investigations of hormone-brain-behavior relations, it is fair to say that our field has achieved a depth of knowledge and understanding unique in neurobiology at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Read more...

Whilst nanofood sector is a relatively new emergent, it is widely expected to grow rapidly in the future. A number of nano-sized additives and supplements for food and healthfood products, and nanotechnology derived food packaging materials, are already available in some countries, and their number is expected to increase in the coming years. Whilst such developments offer enormous benefits to the food sector, they have also raised a number of issues in relation to consumer safety, environmental impacts, and ethical, policy and regulatory aspects. Despite these rapid developments in nanotechnology applications for the food sector, only a few reports and articles are currently available that provide an account of the new developments and the current size of market for nanotechnology products and applications. These also do not provide a critical evaluation of the broader aspects of the technology, such as issues around safety of the products to consumers and the environment, and adequacy of the existing regulatory controls. This book provides a source of much needed and up-to-date information on the products and applications of nanotechnology for the food sector - for scientists, regulators, and consumers alike. It also gives an independent, balanced, and impartial view of the potential benefits as well Read more...

Although the central genetic dogma applied to a majority of life forms is defined as genetic information flow from DNA, to messenger RNA, then to protein, the complete sequencing of the three billion-letter human genome has shed little light on how precisely such unidirectional information flow of tens of thousands of genes is programmed. If the achievement of complete sequencing of the one-dimensional linear genetic code of the human genome can be compared with man landing on the moon, then the complexity and difficulty in interpreting the genomic instruction into the form of gene expression in a four-dimensional biological context, such as during development and disease, will prove to be a much more challenging and daunting task than that of getting man back from the moon to the earth. Read more...

These copper protein sites are associated with a variety of vital biological functions, including oxygen transport and activation, electron transfer, iron metabolism, and superoxide dismutation. The protein ligand imposes an unusual geometric and electronic structure at the copper site. As a consequence, copper proteins often exhibit unique and characteristic spectral features compared to small molecule copper complexes. Certain electrical fields when applied across a cell can have as a sole effect the permeabilization of the cell membrane, presumable through the formation of nanoscale defects in the cell membrane. Sometimes this process leads to cell death, primarily when the electrical fields cause permanent permeabilization of the membrane and the consequent loss of cell homeostasis, in a process known as irreversible electroporation. This is an unusual mode of cell death that is not understood yet. Read more...

Biological risk is of concern to us all. The biological risks we face vary and include biological contamination within our environment and, more personally, biological risk to ourselves through disease or the potential for disease. This book deals with a subset of biological risk agents defined as bacteria, molds, yeasts, viruses, and prions. The term biologicals refers to these agents. Of these, the viruses and prions are not currently defined as independent life forms, and the extent to which these agents exhibit the characteristics of organic life are still being debated. The intent of this compendium of information is to foster risk management decisions. In times of strength, we can manage many risks for ourselves and for those around us. As homeland security and other risk-management agendas are addressed politically, increasing emphasis will be placed on codifying biohazard management protocols. The biological risk regulatory process is expected to progress in a manner similar to the chemical risk regulations developed under Superfund. In fact, Superfund was always intended to include uncontrolled infectious substances. The authors of biological risk management regulations face a daunting challenge in that biohazardous agents, unlike chemicals, can reproduce. Read more...

Unfortunately, applied plant breeding programs that are focused on cereal commodity crops are under serious erosion because of lack of funding. This loss of public support affects breeding continuity, objectivity, and, perhaps equally important, the training of future plant breeders and the utilization and improvement of plant genetic resources currently available. Breeding programs should focus not only on short-term research goals but also on long-term genetic improvement of germplasm. The research products of breeding programs are important not only for food security but also for commodity-oriented public and private programs, especially in the fringes of crop production. Breeding strategies used for long-term selection are often neglected but the reality is that long-term research is needed for the success of short-term products. An excellent example is that genetically broad-based public germplasm has significantly been utilized and recycled by industry, producing billions of dollars for industry and farmers before intellectual property rights were available. Successful examples of breeding continuity have served the sustainable cereal crop production that we currently have. The fact that farmers rely on public and private breeding institutions for solving long-term challenges should influence policy makers to reverse this trend of reduced funding. One of the greatest challenges for mechanists is to extend the success of computational mechanics to fields outside traditional engineering, in particular to biology, biomedical sciences, and medicine. The proposed workshop will pre an opportunity for computational biomechanics specialists to present and exchange opinions on the opportunities of applying their techniques to computer-integrated medicine. For example, continuum mechanics models pre a rational basis for analysing biomedical images by constraining the solution to biologically reasonable motions and processes. Biomechanical modelling can also pre clinically important information about the physical status of the underlying biology, integrating information across molecular, tissue, organ, and organism scales. The main goal of this workshop is to showcase the clinical and scientific utility of computational biomechanics in computer-integrated medicine. Read more...

Introduction
Conrad G. Brunk and Harold Coward
A lively debate about genetically modifi ed foods has engaged around the
world since their fi rst introduction onto the markets of many countries in
the last decades of the twentieth century. The debate has been especially
intense in Europe, Japan, and parts of Africa and has led in many instances
to moratoria on the introduction of genetically modifi ed crops into the
agriculture of the societies and strict requirements for the labeling of genetically
modifi ed foods and food ingredients produced in or imported into
the country.
This debate has been uncharacteristically subdued in North America,
where these products were fi rst grown for commercial use and sent to markets
for consumption. Public concern or opposition was limited primarily
to small, often marginalized, environmental or consumer groups but did
not become widespread as in other regions. One reason for this may have
been that government regulators in Canada and the United States approved
these products for the market with no public announcement that they were
doing so and certainly without any prior public consultation, in contrast
to the practice in most European countries. Indeed, most people in North
America have been until very recently completely unaware that much of
the food they are purchasing is from genetically modifi ed corn, canola, soybeans, Read more...

Product Description:

Alternative techniques and tools for analyzing biomolecular networks

With the recent rapid advances in molecular biology, high-throughput experimental methods have resulted in enormous amounts of data that can be used to study biomolecular networks in living organisms. With this development has come recognition of the fact that a complicated living organism cannot be fully understood by merely analyzing individual components. Rather, it is the interactions of components or biomolecular networks that are ultimately responsible for an organism's form and function. This book addresses the important need for a new set of computational tools to reveal essential biological mechanisms from a systems biology approach.

Readers will get comprehensive coverage of analyzing biomolecular networks in cellular systems based on available experimental data with an emphasis on the aspects of network, system, integration, and engineering. Each topic is treated in depth with specific biological problems and novel computational methods:

Product Description:

While the vast majority of our food supplies are nutritious and safe, foodborne pathogen-related illness still affects millions of people each year. Large outbreaks of foodborne diseases — such as the recent salmonella outbreak linked to various peanut butter products — continue to be reported with alarming frequency.

All-Encompassing Guide to Detection Techniques

One of the most effective ways to control and prevent human foodborne infections is to implement a pathogen surveillance system. Addressing the biology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of more than 60 microorganisms, Molecular Detection of Foodborne Pathogens demonstrates how to implement a surveillance system that uses state-of-the-art molecular techniques to quickly detect and identify bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens concerned.

Included in each chapter:

Concise review of the selected pathogen in respect to its biology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis
Summary of molecular detection methods available
Description of clinical/food sample collection and preparation procedures
Selection of robust, effective, step-by-step detection protocols
Discussion of the current challenges and ongoing research needs to further extend utility Read more...
