Without plants we would not be able to live; they have always been intimately linked to life on Earth. Thanks to photosynthesis, plants provide us with food,
medicines, wood, resins, and oxygen, among other things. Discovering plants' processes for converting sunlight into carbohydrates such as sugars and starches is almost magical. Read more...

It is very similar to

Chronobiology of Marine Organisms

Do intertidal organisms simply respond to the rise and fall of tides, or do they possess biological timing and navigation mechanisms that allow them to anticipate when conditions are most favourable? How are the patterns of growth, development and reproduction of some marine plants and animals related to changes in day-length or to phases of the moon? The author describes how marine organisms, from single cells to vertebrates, on sea shores, in estuaries and in the open ocean, have evolved inbuilt biological clockwork and synchronisation mechanisms which control rhythmic processes and navigational behaviour, permitting successful exploitation of highly variable and often hostile environments. Adopting a hypothesis-testing and experimental approach, the book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of marine biology, marine ecology, animal behaviour, oceanography and other biological sciences and also as an introduction for researchers, including physiologists, biochemists and molecular biologists entering the field of chronobiology. Read more...

Handbook of Nature Study

Nature study is not just for crunchy granola, back to nature, tree hugger types. You don’t need to strap a two hundred pound backpack onto your aching spine and head off into some Blair Witch project area just to teach your younglings about trees and wildlife. Color field guides are extremely helpful, but you certainly don’t need an advanced degree in botany to teach your child the difference between a morning glory and a daisy. And almost one hundred years ago, Ms. Comstock recognized that and set about showing others the joy of introducing a child to the natural world with her book, Handbook of Nature Study. The first section covers the how-tos of her method. This method encompasses all the core subject areas and is covered in further detail in the methodology section. Subsequent sections cover the entire spectrum of the natural world. There is an area devoted to animals, which includes subsections on mammals, fish, birds, and other branches of the animal family tree. Another area is devoted to plants and covers trees, wildflowers, crops, and even weeds. But this is not just a biology and botany manual. The third main area is devoted to the earth and sky and includes astronomy, climatology, and geology. Lessons include an information section for the parent/teacher to read followed by observational questions to be asked of the student. Easily utilized in a zoo, botanical garden or local park, even those in the most urban of areas will find incorporating this book into their Read more...

By Steven H. Propp (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Smarter than man?: Intelligence in whales, dolphins, and humans, (Hardcover)
The authors indicate in the Foreword to this book, "By attacking the deeply rooted notion that man is the most remarkable thing God ever created, it should help us to understand that we are a part of biology. The book is propagandistic, but not in the sense that it compromises what the authors think is true or scientifically probable..."

They write, "The wolf pack in the Chicago Zoo ... appear to be quite capable of some kind of birth control---the dominant female decides which of her sisters will bear litters in any given year, and the dominant male controls his subordinates. It looks as if the wolves are capable of stopping the growth curve before it stops itself for lack of space."

Concerning dolphins, "Several stories concerning the teamwork of dolphins with each other have been reported by American dolphin experts.... There are also many stories of how dolphins help unconscious companions who are in danger of drowning, both in the wild state and in captivity. There is not the least doubt but that on certain occasions dolphins behave purposefully."

They conclude on the note, "Even people who understand the doctrine of evolution intellectually have a hard time FEELING strongly enough that man is Read more...

Ecology of Marine Sediments

This concise, readable introduction to benthic ecology builds upon the strengths of the previous edition but has been thoroughly revised throughout to incorporate the new technologies and methods that have allowed a rapid and ongoing development of the field. It explores the relationship between community structure and function, and the selection of global examples ensures an international appeal and relevance. The economic value of marine sediments increases daily, reflected in the text with a new emphasis on pollution, climate change, conservation, and management. This accessible textbook is suitable for both advanced undergraduate and graduate students who have had a general ecology course, but no further training in benthic ecology. It will also be of relevance and use to professional researchers and consultants in marine ecology and environmental science who seek a compact but comprehensive introduction to benthic ecology. Read more...

This collection of articles about all aspects of evolution is a feast of challenging ideas, drawing together world-renowned thinkers and communicators with their own intriguing insights. This impressive cast of contributors takes on such questions as: Why and how do civilizations and societies change over time? Why do our cells develop the way they do? Why are some villages still villages while others have grown into vast cities? Can we learn from our evolutionary past to plan a better future for our health and society? Tracing the history of biological evolution, through the evolution of cultures, society, science and the universe, contributors such as Stephen Jay Gould, Freeman Dyson, and Martin Rees address these mysteries by considering parallels from all levels of life. From the evolution of the embryo to the evolution of a star, common threads emerge to tell a fascinating story with surprising implications. Read more...

Zoo director and consultant Roots provides a wealth of photographs of the critters that go bump in the night along with a very accessible text, describing how moderate as well as extreme environments create the nocturnal urge in everything from salamanders to the big cats. He covers sensory oddities, night birds, the first nocturnal mammals, the sound navigators, eaters of night-time insects, dark hunters and their game, and primates who just cannot get to bed early. There are many starling facts here: those of us perpetually low on our kangaroo supply will find they are nocturnal, as are porcupines and a number of wild cats, and warthogs have gone nocturnal due to excessive persecution, much to their further decimation. Read more...

Densely packed chapters move from the history of American farming to sustainable practices for the future. The prose is dry, and Casper sometimes glosses over controversial issues, such as factory farming and mad cow disease. But the breadth of information about agriculture is rare in a book published for youth, and many practical sidebars, such as instructions for creating composting, will attract environmentally conscious teens as well as students searching for science-fair ideas. Numerous tables, diagrams, and illustrations; a glossary and chronology; and extensive resource lists support this useful survey, an entry in the new Natural Resources series. Read more...

It is an icon of the Australian outback where it is more commonly known as the bush or plains turkey. It is also culturally and spiritually significant to Aboriginal people, who prize it as a favorite bush tucker.
This book provides the first complete overview of the biology of the Australian bustard. Based on the first major study of the species, the author explores the bustard’s ecology and behavior, its drastic decline since European settlement, and the conservation issues affecting it and its environment. Color photographs of juvenile and adult birds complement the text as well as showcase particular behaviors, such as the spectacular display routines of males when mating, which are unique among Australian birds. Australian Bustard is the perfect book for natural history enthusiasts.

In revising the text, McGraw-Hill has consulted extensively with previous users, noted experts and professors in the field. It is distinguished from other texts by its strong emphasis on natural selection and the evolutionary process that explains biodiversity.
Not only has the book been thoroughly updated to reflect rapid advances, there is more emphasis today on the teaching of concepts and this has led to significant changes in how the material is presented.

Five considerations influenced this revision. They are: 1) Focus on concepts; 2) Reinforcing Ideas; 3) Emphasizing relevance to students; 4) Keeping up with new developments; and 5) Careful editing.

Almost Human

Vividly written and filled with fascinating insights, Almost Human chronicles thirty years of Shirley Strum's fieldwork with a troop of olive baboons nicknamed the Pumphouse Gang. From the first paragraph, the reader is drawn along with Strum into the world of the baboons, learning about the tragedies and triumphs of their daily lives - and of her own voyage of courageous scientific discovery.
In the same way that Jane Goodall's pioneering study of chimpanzees revealed their likeness to humans, Strum's work shows how, contrary to the popular image and the scientific evidence of the time, the more distantly related baboons are just as socially savvy. Almost Human includes her groundbreaking discovery that social finesse, rather than male dominance and aggression, plays a crucial role in baboon society, and Strum relates the drama of a daring translocation experiment with the Pumphouse Gang that ultimately ensured their survival when their habitat was threatened by destruction. This edition includes a new introduction that places Strum's research in the context of the current global conservation crisis and an epilogue that tells us what has happened to the Pumphouse Gang since the book was first published.

On the Origins and Dynamics of Biodiversity: the Role of Chance

Chance is necessary for living systems – from the cell to organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems. It is at the heart of their evolution and diversity. Long considered contingent on other factors, chance both produces random events in the environment, and is the product of endogenous mechanisms - molecular as well as cellular, demographic and ecological. This is how living things have been able to diversify themselves and survive on the planet. Chance is not something to which Life has been subjected; it is quite simply necessary for Life. The endogenous mechanisms that bring it about are at once the products and the engines of evolution, and they also produce biodiversity. These internal mechanisms – veritable “biological roulettes” - are analogous to the mechanical devices that bring about “physical chance”. They can be modeled by analogous mathematical equations. This open the way of a global modeling of biodiversity dynamics, but we need also to gather quantitative data in both the laboratory setting as well as in the field. By examining biodiversity at all scales and all levels, this book seeks to evaluate the breadth of our knowledge on this topical subject, to propose an integrated look at living things, to assess the role of chance in its dynamics, in the evolutionary processes and also to imagine practical consequences on the management of living systems. Read more...

Of course, he is also an excellent contributor to this book. In addition, Professor David Alpers, Professor Emeritus of Washington University, School of Medicine, well revised the present HDL book. Therefore, I want to thank him for his revision of this book. Unfortunately, since planning to publish this HDL book, two and half years have passed. Some contributors immediately accepted my planning, however, half of the contributors have not been able to complete the publication of “The HDL Handbook: Biological Functions and Clinical Applications”. Read more...

Sulfurous smells frequently accompanied lightning, elevating it to empyrean status; a fiery means by which the wrath of the gods was manifest on earth. Indeed, the destruction of the twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, thought to be sited just south of the Dead Sea, was purported to be mediated by brimstone and fire, turning a once-fertile plain into a barren wilderness. Such brimstone, or ‘burning stone’ may have been exploited by man in another sulfurous form, hewn from the depths of the earth. Realgar, bright red arsenic disulfide, which crumbles to yellow orpiment on exposure to light, and produces intense blue fire when oxidized with nitre, is a strong candidate for an ingredient of the mysterious ‘Greek Fire’ of Constantinople and the ancient world. Read more...

A biomarker is a characteristic that can be objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of a physiological as well as a pathological process or response to a therapeutic intervention. Although there is nothing new about biomarkers such as glucose for diabetes and blood pressure for hypertension, the current focus is on molecular biomarkers, which have taken the center stage in the development of molecular medicine. Molecular diagnostic technologies have enabled the discovery of molecular biomarkers and are helping in the definition of their role in the pathomechanism of disease. Biomarkers form the basis of development of diagnostic assays as well as targets for drug discovery. Effect of drugs, in clinical trials as well as in practice, can be monitored by biomarker assays. Read more...

One of the major reasons for the interest in studying high pressure is that this environmental factor also plays an important role in thermodynamics and consequently in biology. Pressure, from a biological perspective, has a bearing on all living creatures. The book presents a panoramic view of this subject from molecules to the overall organism, via the cells and unicellular species, invertebrates and vertebrates, ectotherms and endotherms. This book provides not only the more recent results in each of its chapters but also suggests new directions for research. The intended readership is postgraduate students and research scientists in various fields. Read more...

DNA Topology by Andrew D. Bates

The double helix structure discovered by Watson and Crick 50 years ago is now very familiar and its importance for DNA function is widely appreciated. However, it has become clear that there are many deviations from this basic structure that have important biological consequences. Prominent among these are the 'topological' configurations: supercoiling, knotting, and catenation (linking). Unfortunately, a full understanding of these features of DNA structure requires the grasp of concepts that can prove difficult for both students and more advanced researchers. This book aims to explain these ideas simply, but rigorously, to allow a wider appreciation of DNA topology. "DNA Topology" starts with a basic account of DNA structure before going on to cover DNA supercoiling, the definitions and physical meanings of linking number, twist, and writhe, and the free energy associated with supercoiling. It then considers the rather more complex description of DNA lying on a curved surface and its application to the nucleosome, followed by the phenomena of DNA knotting and catenation. The final chapters deal with the topoisomerases, the enzymes that control DNA topology, and, most importantly, with the biological significance of the topological aspects of DNA structure. Although some of these concepts are quite complex, they are presented in an accessi Read more...

Cacti are recognized for their attractive flowers, special stem shapes, and ability to tolerate drought. Because of their efficient use of water and other adaptations, biological and agronomic interest in cacti has soared. These fascinating plants also have much to teach us about biodiversity and conservation. Yet a current, synthetic, wide-ranging reference on cacti has not been available until now. This comprehensive book, compiled by a well-known cactus biologist, includes authoritative, up-to-date chapters by thirty-five contributors from around the world on topics ranging from evolution to biotechnology. It is the first book of its kind to compile information on cactus biology, ecology, and uses in one convenient place. The first half of the book provides a thorough overview of cactus biology and morphology and discusses the environmental and conservation issues that affect the plants. It includes a discussion of the evolution of the family, paying particular attention to new genetic and molecular approaches. The second half of the book focuses on the practical concerns of cultivating cacti, such as pest control and diseases, horticultural and forage applications, and techniques for agronomy. The objective of the book has always been to form a sound introduction to the basic principles of the subject from a biochemical and mechanistic viewpoint. It is a testament to the vitality and progression of toxicology that the increasing sophistication, complexity, and expansion of the subject mean that revision of at least parts of this book is essential every few years. However, a book of this size cannot realistically cover all of the diverse aspects of toxicology in equal depth and detail and include all the new developments that are occurring, hence the extensive bibliography, which should be used to complement this text where more detail or other examples are wanted. Read more...

It is an annual plant that has been used in China for 5,000 years as a food and a component of drugs. Soy contains significant amounts of all the essential amino acids for humans, and so is a good source of protein. Soybeans are the primary ingredient in many processed foods, including dairy product substitutes and are an important global crop, providing oil and protein. On the other hand, wheat is a world-wide cultivated grass from the Middle East. Globally, after maize, wheat is the second most-produced food among the cereal crops. It is used to make flour, and for fermentation to make beer, alcohol or biofuel. This book addresses a wide variety of issues in the production and use of these two important crops. Among those included are pest infestation, quality of food produced for human as well as animal consumption, genetically modified plants and ways to increase productivity. Read more...

In the winter of 2004, Jasna Markovac, the publisher of my monograph “Genomic Regulatory Systems” (2001), asked me to think about doing a second edition of that work. But no sooner had I opened that door and begun to survey the landscape than, as in an old legend of magic, everything seemed to have been transformed to another landscape. The conceptual peaks that were the landmarks of “Genomic Regulatory Systems” were still there, but now new mountains towered over them, and the whole domain appeared to be much more brightly illuminated, and to extend farther toward the horizon. It was beyond possibility to “update” a vista so changed. Read more...

Given the great pharmaceutical industry interest in genes, this trend has continued in most subsequent texts. These deal extensively with the exciting topic of gene discovery and searching databases, but hardly consider genomes as information channels through which multiple forms and levels of information, including genic information, have passed through the generations. This book identifies the types of information that genomes transmit, shows how competition between different types is resolved in the genomes of different organisms, and identifies the evolutionary forces involved. The early chapters relate the form of information with which we are most familiar, namely written texts, to the DNA text that is our genome. This lends itself well to introducing historical aspects dating back to the nineteenth century. Read more...

Yet silence descended a few years ago when domesticated bee populations plummeted. Bees, in particular honey bees, are critical links in the vibrant chain that brings fruits, vegetables, and nuts to markets and dinner tables across the country. Farmers and scientists on the agricultural frontlines quickly realized the impact of this loss, but many others did not see this devastation.

Why Do Bees Buzz? reports on the mysterious "colony collapse disorder" that has affected honey bee populations, as well as other captivating topics, such as their complex, highly social lives, and how other species of bees are unique and different from honey bees. Organized in chapters that cover everything from these provocative pollinators' basic biology to the aggressive nature of killer bees, this insightful question and answer guide provides a honeycomb of compelling facts. Read more...

Grooming is among the most evolutionary ancient and highly represented behaviours in many animal species. It represents a significant proportion of an animal's total activity and between 30-50% of their waking hours. Recent research has demonstrated that grooming is regulated by specific brain circuits and is sensitive to stress, as well as to pharmacologic compounds and genetic manipulation, making it ideal for modelling affective disorders that arise as a function of stressful environments, such as stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. Over a series of 12 chapters that introduce and explicate the field of grooming research and its significance for the human and animal brain, this book covers the breadth of grooming animal models while simultaneously providing sufficient depth in introducing the concepts and translational approaches to grooming research. Written primarily for graduates and researchers within the neuroscientific community.

This book focuses on the meaning and significance of that archive and is designed for introductory college science students, including non-science majors, enrolled in survey courses emphasizing paleontology, geology and biology.

From the origins of animals to the evolution of rap music, from ancient mass extinctions
to the current biodiversity crisis, and from the Snowball Earth to present day climate change this book covers it, with an eye towards showing how past life on Earth puts the modern world into its proper context. The history of life and the patterns and processes of evolution are especially emphasized, as are the interconnections between our planet, its climate system, and its varied life forms. The book does not just describe the history of life, but uses actual examples from life’s history to illustrate important concepts and theories. Read more...

What Is Biodiversity?

In the life sciences, there is wide-ranging debate about biodiversity. While nearly everyone is in favor of biodiversity and its conservation, methods for its assessment vary enormously. So what exactly is biodiversity? Most theoretical work on the subject assumes it has something to do with species richness—with the number of species in a particular region—but in reality, it is much more than that. Arguing that we cannot make rational decisions about what it is to be protected without knowing what biodiversity is, James Maclaurin and Kim Sterelny offer in What Is Biodiversity? a theoretical and conceptual exploration of the biological world and how diversity is valued.
Here, Maclaurin and Sterelny explore not only the origins of the concept of biodiversity, but also how that concept has been shaped by ecology and more recently by conservation biology. They explain the different types of biodiversity important in evolutionary theory, developmental biology, ecology, morphology and taxonomy and conclude that biological heritage is rich in not just one biodiversity but many. Maclaurin and Sterelny also explore the case for the conservation of these biodiversities using option value theory, a tool borrowed from economics.
An erudite, provocative, timely, and creative attempt to answer a fundamental question, What Is Biodiversity? will become a foundational text in the life sciences and studies thereof. Read more...

The accumulated evidence of systems as complex as a cell cannot be fully understood by studying only their isolated constituents, giving rise to a new area of interest in research -- the study of complex networks. In a broad sense, biological networks have been one of the most studied networks, and the field has benefited from many important contributions. By understanding and modeling the structure of a biological network, a better perception of its dynamical and functional behavior is to be expected. This unique book compiles the most relevant results and novel insights provided by network theory in the biological sciences, ranging from the structure and dynamics of the brain to cellular and protein networks and to population-level biology. Read more...

A series of authoritative chapters have been written by the top names in conservation biology with the principal aim of disseminating cutting-edge conservation knowledge as widely as possible. Important topics such as balancing conversion and human needs, climate change, conservation planning, designing and analyzing conservation research, ecosystem services, endangered species management, extinctions, fire, habitat loss, and invasive species are covered. Numerous textboxes describing additional relevant material or case studies are also included.

The global biodiversity crisis is now unstoppable; what can be saved in the developing world will require an educated constituency in both the developing and developed world. Habitat loss is particularly acute in developing countries, which is of special concern because it tends to be these locations where the greatest species diversity and richest centres of endemism are to be found. Sadly, developing world conservation scientists have found it difficult to access an authoritative textbook, which is particularly ironic since it is these countries where the potential benefits of knowledge application are greatest. There is now an urgent need to educate the next generation of scientists in developing countries, so that they are in a better position to protect their natural resources. Read more...

This book culminates almost sixty years of the scientist's research of the origin and classification of the flowering plants. It presents a continuation of Dr. Takhtajan's earlier publications including "Systema Magnoliophytorum" (1987), (in Russian), and "Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants" (1997), (in English). In his latest book, the author presents a concise and significantly revised system of plant classification ('Takhtajan system') based on the most recent studies in plant morphology, embryology, phytochemistry, cytology, molecular biology and palynology. Flowering plants are divided into two classes: class Magnoliopsida (or Dicotyledons) includes 8 subclasses, 126 orders, c. 440 families, almost 10,500 genera, and no less than 195,000 species; and, class Liliopsida (or Monocotyledons) includes 4 subclasses, 31 orders, 120 families, more than 3,000 genera, and about 65,000 species. This book contains a detailed description of plant orders, and descriptive keys to plant families providing characteristic features of the families and their differences. Read more...

Looking for a Few Good Males: Female Choice in Evolutionary Biology

In considering these questions, Erika Lorraine Milam explores the fascinating patterns of experiment and interpretation that emerged as twentieth-century researchers studied sexual selection and female choice.

Approaching the topic from both biological and animal-studies perspectives, Milam not only presents a broad history of sexual selection -- from Darwin to sociobiology -- but also analyzes the animal-human continuum from the perspectives of sex, evolution, and behavior. She asks how social and cultural assumptions influence human-animal research and wonders about the implications of gender on scientific outcomes.

Although female choice appears to be a straightforward theoretical concept, the study of sexual selection has been anything but simple. Scientists in the early twentieth century investigated female choice in animals but did so with human social and sexual behavior as their ultimate objective. By the 1940s, evolutionary biologists and population geneticists shifted their focus, studying instead how evolution affected natural animal populations. Two decades later, organismal biologists once again redefined the investigation of sexual selection as sociobiology came to dominate the discipline.

Outlining the ever-changing history of this field of study, Milam uncovers lost mid-century research programs and finds that the discipline did not languish in the decades between Read more...

John Allman addresses this question in Evolving Brains, a provocative study of brain evolution that introduces readers to some of the most exciting developments in science in recent years. Evolving Brains integrates a multiplicity of evolutionary developments involving genetics, response to climate variations, social organization, the nervous system, environment, and behavior. Drawing on a wealth of new findings in molecular genetics and paleontology, Evolving Brains reveals many of the underlying physiological mechanisms that have influenced the formation of our brains. For example, it's no accident that the brain is located near the entrance to the gut because one of the most basic functions of a brain is finding good things to eat and rejecting toxins.

Zooming from the microworld of genes to the macroworld of evolution and behavior, Evolving Brains shows how large brains developed as a buffer against the perilous hazards of an ever-shifting environment, and how the evolution of large brains depended crucially on the formation of the extended family. The rise of the family and its need for communication in turn led to the development of language.

One of the clearest maps yet of the brain's long and eventful journey though time, Evolving Brains reveals a more complete picture of who we are and where we come from.

Their presence asks: what happens when the Other can no longer safely be assumed to be human? This collection offers a set of incitements and coordinates for exploring how these issues have been represented in contemporary culture and theory, from Jurassic Park and the "horse whisperer" Monty Roberts, to the work of artists such as Joseph Beuys and William Wegman; from foundational texts on the animal in the works of Heidegger and Freud, to the postmodern rethinking of ethics and animals in figures such as Singer, Deleuze, Lyotard, and Levinas; from the New York Times investigation of a North Carolina slaughterhouse, to the first appearance in any language of Jacques Derrida's recent detailed critique of Lacan's rendering of the human/animal divide.

Its origin is usually attributed to Edward Jenner (Fig. 1.1), who discovered in 1796 that cowpox, or vaccinia, induced protection against human smallpox, an often fatal disease. Jenner called his procedure vaccination, and this term is still used to describe the inoculation of healthy individuals with weakened or attenuated strains of disease-causing agents to provide protection from disease. Although Jenner's bold experiment was successful, it took almost two centuries for smallpox vaccination to become universal, an advance that enabled the World Health Organization to announce in 1979 that smallpox had been eradicated (Fig. 1.2), arguably the greatest triumph of modern medicine. Read more...

This revolution is more fundamental than the agricultural and industrial revolutions. The ability to sit in our homes and go shopping anywhere in the world, to browse the range of offerings, and to have items delivered to us is becoming commonplace. But this revolution also deals with information about ourselves, how we differ from others in minute detail, and how the cells that constitute our bodies are able to process the information that enables us to live our lives. This book represents a fragment of the biological information revolution as we struggle to gather the large number of facts that are required as a prerequisite to understanding life. We are not too far away from this understanding for simple life forms, perhaps ten years will suffice. It is fascinating to be living during this period. The authors of the various chapters have attempted to make some of the methodology accessible so that the techniques may be applied by others to enhance our knowledge. Read more...

Although many of the pioneering studies in this field have taken place in clinical laboratories, the materials listed and organisms sought for foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals are much more varied. In this volume, leading experts from research and industry review the wide variety of approaches that are needed in an industrial setting. The methods described include electrometric techniques, ATP assay, and immunological methods for a wide range of organisms from salmonellas to viruses, each chapter drawing on the authors direct experience in industry to give a highly practical guide. The book should prove invaluable to those in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries, or in research and training, who require an up-to-date survey of the use of rapid microbiological methods. Read more...

Flow Cytometry Data Analysis: Basic Concepts and Statistics

This book covers very basic number handling techniques, regression analysis, probability functions, statistical tests and methods of analyzing dynamic processes from flow cytometry data. These are developed for the analysis of not only individual DNA histograms to obtain the proportion of cells in the cell cycle phases, but also time courses of DNA histograms to yield cell cycle kinetic information; overlapping immunofluorescence distributions with confidence limits for the estimated proportions; enzyme kinetic and membrane transport parameters and a brief introduction to multivariate analysis is given. A distinction is made between data handling, for example gating and counting the numbers of cells within that gate, a process commonly regarded as data analysis but which, in reality, is data handling, and data analysis itself which is the means by which information is extracted.

• An excellent reminder for all who wish to be reminded of basic statistical procedures and principles in relation to flow cytometry • Of interest to a wide variety of individuals - students, laboratory technicians and professionals

This tradition continues with the new Fifth Edition, which has been completely revised and updated to describe our current, rapidly advancing understanding of cell biology. To list but a few examples, a large amount of new material is presented on epigenetics; stem cells; RNAi; comparative genomics; the latest cancer therapies; apoptosis (now its own separate chapter); and cell cycle control and the mechanics of M phase (now integrated into one chapter). The hallmark features of Molecular Biology of the Cell have been retained, such as its consistent and comprehensive art program, clear concept headings, and succinct section summaries. Additionally, in response to extensive feedback from readers, the Fifth Edition now includes several new features. Read more...

Introduction to Marine Genomics

Marine biology has always played an important role in biological research, being at the origin of many key advances. To a certain extent, the influence of marine biology on the biological sciences was overshadowed over a period of several years by the remarkable advances that were made using powerful model organisms from terrestrial environments. This situation is now changing again, however, due primarily to spectacular developments in genomic methodologies that have significantly accelerated research in a broad spectrum of marine biology disciplines ranging from biodiversity to developmental biology to biotechnology. The data generated by marine genomics projects have had an impact on questions as diverse as understanding planetary geochemical cycles, the impact of climate change on marine fauna and flora, the functioning of marine ecosystems, the discovery of new organisms and novel biomolecules, and investigation of the evolution of animal developmental complexity.

This book represents the first attempt to document how genomic technologies are revolutionising these diverse domains of marine biology. Each chapter of this book looks at how these technologies are being employed in a specific domain of marine research and provides a summary of the major results obtained to date. The book as a whole provides an overview of marine genomics as a discipline and represents an ideal starting point for exploring this rapidly developing domain. Read more...

In the years subsequent to the cloning of EPO and its expression as a recombinant protein, much was written about EPO. Although much has been learned and published, new, exciting data are becoming available on almost a daily basis. Erythropoietins and Erythropoiesis: Molecular, Cellular, Preclinical, and Clinical Biology compiles both pertinent historical and very recent research on this molecule and its clinical utility. The book is divided into two sections: Background and Basic Science and Clinical Uses of Recombinant Erythropoietins. To begin, Israels and Israels describe the biology of red cells, the hierarchy of erythropoietic progenitor cells, their development to mature cells, and the effects of endogenous EPO on their development. Foote summarizes the historical interest in, and search for, an erythropoietic factor. Once EPO was identified, cloned, and expressed, the path was set for the study of other aspects of EPO biology both within erythropoiesis and other cellular systems. Read more...

Life stories, elegantly combined with mindful observations of animals, plants, landscape and the skies, theories in natural science, environmental considerations, and touches of art criticism and popular culture, offer insights into the linked analogies of nature and soul. A glacial pond teeming with salamanders in arrested development is cause for reflection on the limits of a life that knows only bounty. The hot blue lights of celestial phenomena are a metaphor for fast, flashy men—he loves of a life—and a romantic career is interpreted. Watching a pronghorn buck battling for, and ultimately losing, his harem leads to a meditation on a kind of immortality. Read more...

How to Build a Dinosaur: Extinction Doesn't Have to Be Forever

In movies, in novels, in comic strips, and on television, we’ve all seen dinosaurs—or at least somebody’s educated guess of what they would look like. But what if it were possible to build, or grow, a real dinosaur, without finding ancient DNA? Jack Horner, the scientist who advised Steven Spielberg on Jurassic Park, and a pioneer in bringing paleontology into the twenty-first century, teams up with the editor of The New York Times,/I>’s Science Times section to reveal exactly what’s in store.

In the 1980s, Horner began using CAT scans to look inside fossilized dinosaur eggs, and he and his colleagues have been delving deeper ever since. At North Carolina State University, Mary Schweitzer has extracted fossil molecules—proteins that survived 68 million years—from a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil excavated by Horner. These proteins show that T. rex and the modern chicken are kissing cousins. At McGill University, Hans Larsson is manipulating a chicken embryo to awaken the dinosaur within: starting by growing a tail and eventually prompting it to grow the forelimbs of a dinosaur. All of this is happening without changing a single gene.

This incredible research is leading to discoveries and applications so profound they’re scary in the power they confer on humanity. How to Build a Dinosaur is a tour of the hot rocky deserts Read more...

Encyclopedia of Adaptations in the Natural World is a wide-ranging catalog of the most important of those adaptations—from photosynthesis to the the peculiar OvampireO-like behavior of the tiny life form called the prion.

The seven chapters in the Encyclopedia cover the key survival challenges all organisms face. Entries within those chapters cover specific adaptations from all forms of life, including animals, plants, bacteria, algae, fungi, and viruses. For each adaptation, the book also describes a related technological breakthrough in the human world, showing how engineers today study natural processes to help them develop new inventions. Read more...

This book helps you know if a ferret is the right pet for you before you go out and buy one. If first time ferret owners read this book before they went out and purchased a ferret, there may be less homeless and neglected ferrets and a smaller need for ferret shelters. This book helps explain what to expect from your ferret and how to care for it, from before your new pets arrival home until its final days!! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested or involved in ferret ownership. Read more...

A Textbook Of General Botany

SMITH STANFORD T JAMES B. OVERTON, EDWARD M. GILBERT, ROLLIN H. DENNISTON, GEORGE S. BRYAN, AND CHARLES E. ALLEN T7NIVEBSITY OF WISCONSIN Third Edition NEW YORK THE MACMILLAlf COMPANY 1937 FROM THE PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION This book is an outgrowth of the experience of the authors in the teaching of elementary botany at the University of Wisconsin. For the past three years the text, in successively revised form, has been used in our first-year courses. In its preparation, we have been guided by the view that the subject of botany should be presented as a unit. The beginning student is not interested in, and should not be burdened with, distinctions between the artificially abstracted phases of the subject morphology, physiology, ecology, and the like distinc tions which have their place in defining and limiting the scope of more advanced and special courses. Especially should the study of structure and that of function be intimately correlated in an elementary course. It is hardly necessary, in the present state of development of the teaching of science, to point out that forms selected for study should, whenever possible, be such as are already known to the student, either because of their widespread occurrence in nature or in cultivation, or because of their economic importance or that general conceptions should be illustrated by familiar facts. Par ticularly in botany should the beginning of the study be an observation of eve Read more...

Textbook Of Vertebrate Zoology, 13th Editon

The primary objective of this book is to point out the story of vertebrate evolution as simply as possible, to provide a detailed description of all vertebrate types in a comparative manner and to provide a complete account of development of each type. The book provides an introductory account of the whole class of vertebrates. It has been divided into two parts. Part One describes a thorough description of the protochordates which are believed to be the precursors of vertebrates has been provided.

The balanoglossids now considered to be non-chordate have been included in this book because in many syllabi they still go with the Cephalochordates and Urochordates. Emphasis has been given to the phylogeny of each type.Part Two includes the description of those vertebrate types that form the basis of the study. The origin of each class, morphology, anatomy and development of various organ systems in various animal groups have been briefly summarized. The classification has been dealt with in full details. The book also carries complete work on the embryology of the frog, chick and mammal. In this edition a new chapter on endocrine systems of vertebrates based on modernized researches have been included.
